Verdict: The Dyson Pure Cool TP04 is a premium tower air purifier that also circulates air. It is most compelling if you want sensor feedback on an LCD, app and voice controls, wide oscillation, and a fan in one machine. Its value is harder to justify if you need independently verified airflow, noise, room-size or particle-removal results, because those measurements are not established in the available evidence.
The TP04 uses a 360° Glass HEPA and activated-carbon combination filter. Dyson identifies genuine replacement part 969048-05 for the TP04, DP04 and HP04. The specifications in this table are manufacturer descriptions, not independent laboratory measurements. In particular, the speed count and oscillation range tell you how the controls are configured, not how much air the machine moves at each setting.
How purification and airflow work
Purification with a combined filter
Air is drawn through the cylindrical filter around the base of the tower. The Glass HEPA material is intended to capture fine particles, while the activated-carbon layer addresses certain gases and odors. Dyson’s refurbished TP04 listing says the filter captures 99.97% of microscopic allergens and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns. That is Dyson’s claim for the product and filter system; the available evidence does not include an independent TP04-specific validation of that percentage.
A 0.3-micron figure should not be read as a guarantee that every particle in a room will be removed at that rate. Real room cleaning also depends on airflow, fan speed, filter condition, room layout, doors, windows and the position of the purifier. Because no independent clean-air delivery rate or room-size test is available here, do not choose a room size or expected air-change rate from the 99.97% statement alone.

Sensor feedback and automatic operation
Dyson says the TP04 senses pollutants and reports room particles and gases on its LCD in real time. In automatic mode, the machine responds to the air-quality information it detects. The app provides reporting as well, allowing you to see changes without standing beside the tower.
The display is useful for observing trends such as a rise after cooking or a fall after ventilation, but the figures are the TP04’s sensor readings rather than a calibrated substitute for professional air-quality equipment. Treat them as directional information for operating the purifier.

Fan airflow is not refrigeration
The TP04 can make you feel cooler by moving air across your skin, but it does not lower the room’s actual temperature like an air conditioner. On hot days, the cooling effect depends on airflow direction, speed, humidity and whether you are in the stream of air.
Dyson also documents a backward-airflow mode. It sends purified air out through the rear of the machine so the unit can continue purifying without blowing air directly at you. That is useful in cooler weather or when you want filtration without a noticeable breeze. Dyson’s feature description says, “New 350° oscillation allows you to circulate and mix air around the whole room.” This is a manufacturer statement about the design, not an independently measured circulation result. Controls you can use every day
Remote, app and voice control
The included remote handles the core functions from across the room. Dyson’s Link app adds remote operation and air-quality reporting, while voice-service support lets you issue commands through a compatible voice assistant. App and voice availability can depend on your account, phone, network and regional service support, so the physical remote remains the simplest fallback.
Oscillation and direction
You can set oscillation anywhere from 45° to 350°, according to Dyson’s owner information. A narrower setting can keep airflow within a seating area; a wider setting is intended to distribute air around more of the room. The machine’s loop does not rotate continuously through a full circle, so placement still matters: leave clearance around the intake and avoid putting the tower behind furniture or curtains.
Automatic mode and the LCD
Automatic mode uses the purifier’s sensed air quality to adjust operation. The LCD reports particles and gases, giving you a visible reason for speed changes. If you prefer a fixed output, select a manual speed rather than relying on automatic adjustments.

Night mode and sleep timer
Night mode dims the screen and is intended for bedrooms. The sleep timer can be set from one to eight hours. Dyson cites a 2017 Dyson Sleep Survey in which more than 70% of respondents said they felt better rested when using a Dyson air purifier. The feature page does not provide the survey’s sample size, method or independent corroboration, so that figure is a Dyson survey result rather than evidence that the TP04 improves sleep for every owner.

Which filter does the TP04 use?
The TP04 uses a 360° Glass HEPA and activated-carbon combination filter. Dyson’s parts listing identifies genuine replacement part 969048-05 as compatible with the TP04, DP04 and HP04. Check the model label on your machine and the regional Dyson parts page before ordering: compatibility and part numbers can vary by market or revision. The official listing is Dyson’s TP04 parts/support page.
The combination design means you replace the particulate and carbon media as one cartridge rather than buying separate filters for the TP04. A remote is also listed as a replacement part on Dyson’s page, which matters if the original is lost or damaged.
When to replace the TP04 filter
Use the purifier’s own filter-life notification as the primary trigger. Dyson’s parts guidance recommends replacement every 12 months or when the machine notifies you. Twelve months is a recommendation, not a guaranteed lifespan: cooking smoke, dust, pets, wildfire smoke, operating hours and fan speed can shorten or extend the interval.
- Check the LCD or app for a filter-life alert.
- Confirm that the replacement is genuine part 969048-05 and marked for TP04 compatibility in your region.
- Replace the cartridge when notified, even if a calendar year has not passed.
- If a year has passed without an alert, follow Dyson’s 12-month recommendation rather than assuming the filter is still at full capacity.
Do not wash the HEPA/carbon cartridge or treat vacuuming its surface as a substitute for replacement; the available Dyson guidance specifies replacement rather than a washable-filter maintenance cycle.

How to change the filter safely
The exact latch and reset sequence can differ by region and production revision, so use the TP04 owner instructions for the enclosure and notification reset. Dyson’s owner information is at the TP04 owners page. The following workflow keeps the important checks in the right order:
- Turn the TP04 off and disconnect it from the power outlet.
- Have the replacement 969048-05 cartridge ready, and compare its model markings with your TP04 before opening the machine.
- Open the filter housing using the release points shown in the owner instructions; do not force a panel or pull on the loop amplifier.
- Remove the used cartridge and place it in a bag for disposal according to local waste rules.
- Install the new cartridge in the orientation shown by Dyson, ensuring the housing closes fully and evenly.
- Reconnect the purifier and use the owner-page or app instructions to clear the filter-life notification. If the alert remains, power-cycle the machine and recheck that the cartridge and cover are seated correctly.
If the machine still reports a filter error, stop operating it with an unsecured cover and contact Dyson support for the exact procedure for your region. A filter that is compatible in diameter but not approved for your model may not seal correctly.
What independent evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The available product information does not include a TP04-specific independent test. There is no verified measurement here for:
- Clean-air delivery rate or air changes per hour.
- Particle-removal performance in a defined room and test duration.
- Noise in decibels at each of the 10 speed settings.
- A maximum room area supported under a stated standard.
- Electrical consumption at each speed.
That absence does not prove the TP04 performs poorly; it means those numbers should not be invented or inferred from Dyson’s filter-capture statement. If a retailer supplies a room-size recommendation, check which test standard and fan setting produced it before comparing it with another purifier.

At this price level, the TP04’s justification rests on the combined package: a tower fan, purifier, sensor display, app, voice control, broad oscillation and a branded replacement-filter ecosystem. If you only need basic particle filtration and do not care about app reporting or fan airflow, a less expensive purifier category may offer a better fit, but this evidence does not establish which competing model performs better.
Is the Dyson Pure Cool TP04 worth it?
It makes sense when these are your priorities
- You want one appliance that provides both filtration and a noticeable fan breeze.
- You value visible particle and gas readings instead of a purifier that operates without feedback.
- You will use remote, app or voice controls and appreciate automatic air-quality response.
- You need flexible direction, from 45° oscillation to Dyson’s 350° setting, or want backward airflow when direct cooling is uncomfortable.
- You are prepared to budget for a replacement combination filter and to monitor its notification.
Look elsewhere when these constraints matter more
- You require independently verified CADR, decibel or room-coverage figures before purchase.
- Your main goal is lowering room temperature; the TP04 circulates air but is not an air conditioner.
- You want the lowest possible upfront or ongoing filter cost.
- The model is unavailable in your region and you cannot wait for replenishment.
- You do not need app, voice or sensor features and would rather pay for a simpler purifier.
How to compare the TP04 with another purifier-fan
Use the same questions for every candidate instead of comparing headline claims in isolation:
- Initial price and stock: Record the price, currency, tax treatment and whether the exact model is in stock at the time you intend to buy.
- Airflow evidence: Look for a stated test standard, clean-air delivery rate and the fan setting used. Do not substitute a filter percentage for airflow.
- Direction options: Check whether the unit oscillates, the available angle, and whether it can direct purified air away from occupants.
- Noise: Seek measurements at low, medium and maximum speeds. A single “quiet” label is not a decibel test.
- Filter ownership: Confirm the exact cartridge part number, price, regional availability and replacement interval.
- Controls and sensors: Decide whether an LCD, automatic mode, app and voice control are useful to you or simply add cost and complexity.
- Evidence quality: Separate manufacturer specifications from independent laboratory or editorial measurements, and check the date of any test.
The TP04 has documented strengths in controls, display, oscillation and filter identification. Comparable independent results for rival models were not gathered with this review, so no overall winner can be declared on purification, noise or airflow performance.

- Place the tower where its intake and outlet are not blocked by walls, curtains or furniture.
- Use automatic mode if you want the purifier to react to sensed air quality; select a manual speed when you need a predictable airflow.
- Use night mode when screen brightness is disruptive, and set the one-to-eight-hour timer when you want an automatic shutoff.
- Choose backward airflow when you want filtration without a direct breeze.
- Watch the LCD or app for changes, but treat readings as the machine’s sensor data rather than a professional measurement.
- Keep the 969048-05 part number and your exact model available when ordering a replacement.
- Replace the filter when notified and use Dyson’s 12-month recommendation as a backstop.
Bottom line
The TP04 is a feature-rich purifier-fan rather than a conventional cooling appliance. Its strongest case is convenience: one 41.5-inch tower with 10 speeds, broad oscillation, sensor reporting, automatic operation, night mode, timer, app and voice control. Its main uncertainty is performance evidence, since this review has no independent TP04 measurements for airflow, noise, room coverage or particle removal. Buy it when those connected features and the fan function justify the premium, and verify current stock plus the 969048-05 filter supply before committing.
