If you want a current starting point, choose DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS (2025). If you want to follow the series’ western release history, begin with DYNASTY WARRIORS 2 (2000)—not a western Dynasty Warriors 1. The numbered games are not a prerequisite chain: Xtreme Legends and Empires releases are optional branches, so newcomers can pick the edition that fits their interests and platform.
Dynasty Warriors games in western release order
Koei Tecmo’s official anniversary timeline gives the following order for the main western-numbered series. The games draw on China’s Three Kingdoms period; the list below is release chronology, not a claim that every game must be played to follow the setting.

The numbering differs between Japan and the West. The 2000 Japanese release Shin Sangoku Musou was titled DYNASTY WARRIORS 2 in the West; the Japanese Shin Sangoku Musou 2 became western DYNASTY WARRIORS 3. Koei Tecmo’s timeline also lists a separate 2004 Japanese Shin Sangoku Musou release under the western title DYNASTY WARRIORS. It is distinct from the main western-numbered sequence, so don’t insert it as “DW1” in a western release-order list.

Where should you start?
For a current entry: DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS
For most newcomers, ORIGINS is the clearest practical starting point: Koei Tecmo presents it as a return to the series’ roots, and its Europe catalogue lists versions for PS5, Steam, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. That makes it the publisher’s current listed entry, not an objectively proven best game. Confirm the edition and regional store listing for your platform before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Dynasty Warriors 8 PS3
For a legacy alternative: DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition
If you specifically want an older release, consider DW8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition. Koei Tecmo’s licensing catalogue records a Switch release, but availability and compatibility can vary by platform, region, retailer, and edition. Treat it as a legacy option rather than a required stepping stone or a definitive series champion.
For a franchise-history run
Start at western DW2 and move through the numbered list in release order. This is the best fit if your goal is to trace how the franchise changed over time; it is unnecessary if you simply want a game to play now.
Rank #2
- Battlefield action with over 20 intense stages and 40 playable warriors
- Brand new 2-Player versus and cooperative modes!
- Even more bone-crushing moves and improved MUSOU Attacks!
- First in the series - massive elephant troops!
- Plus 7 untold stories!
Are Xtreme Legends and Empires required?
No. Koei Tecmo’s chronology lists Xtreme Legends and Empires entries as separate releases alongside the numbered games. They are branches, not extra numbered installments that everyone must complete before continuing. Choose one when its specific edition or direction appeals to you; the official history establishes the category distinction, but does not by itself support a detailed feature-by-feature comparison.
The publisher describes the broader Warriors-series appeal as “the thrill of 1 vs. 1,000.” That is Koei Tecmo’s own series positioning, rather than an independent assessment of which entry is strongest.
Which entries are worth playing?
There is no evidence-based universal ranking established here, so the useful shortlist depends on what you mean by “worth playing.” For a new purchase, start by checking ORIGINS. For an older edition, investigate DW8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition. For historical comparison, sample the numbered games in release order and add branch releases only if you want them. The publisher’s catalogue supports those choices as practical entry points; it does not establish critical consensus, current prices, stock, or a best-to-worst order.
Platform listings are title- and edition-specific. A platform recorded for one release does not imply that later or earlier games are available on the same hardware. Verify the exact product name, platform, regional store, and retailer listing before purchase. Koei Tecmo’s digital deluxe description for ORIGINS says its digital book and soundtrack are accessed in-game; they should not be mistaken for standalone physical products.
Rank #4
How large is the Warriors series?
KOEI TECMO HOLDINGS says the broader Musou/Warriors series has sold over 42 million copies worldwide; the corporate page does not state a year for that figure. It is a series-wide total, not a sales figure for Dynasty Warriors alone.
