A DVI video port connects compatible video devices and can carry digital video, analog video, or both, depending on its pinout. DVI usually carries video only, so do not assume the connection also sends audio. To choose a compatible cable or adapter, check the port type and the resolution and refresh rate supported by the entire source-to-display setup.
What a DVI port does
DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. It is a family of connectors used to send video from a source, such as a computer, to a display. The connector’s pins determine whether it carries digital signals, analog signals, or both. Plugable’s overview notes that DVI typically carries video only; audio support should not be assumed.

How DVI connector types differ
Look for the letters and pin layout associated with the port or cable. The letters describe the signal type; the link configuration describes digital capacity.

|---|---|---|
| DVI-D | Digital video only | Available as single-link or dual-link. It does not provide analog output for a passive VGA adapter. |
| DVI-I | Digital and analog video | Can support certain DVI-to-VGA connections when the source’s analog output and a suitable adapter are used. Check whether its digital connection is single-link or dual-link. |
| DVI-A | Analog video only | A rare term; Avid describes it as rare. The Digital Display Working Group FAQ, reproduced in a document dated October 11, 2008, says DVI-A is not part of the DVI 1.0 specification. |
Avid explains these signal variants in its DVI-I, DVI-D and DVI-A support article, last updated August 11, 2022.

What single-link and dual-link mean
Single-link and dual-link refer to digital link capacity, not whether the connection is analog or digital. A dual-link configuration adds a second TMDS link to the first, increasing available bandwidth. It does not guarantee that every connected device can use a particular resolution or refresh rate.
The Digital Display Working Group’s basic-information FAQ gives 165 MHz as the single-link capacity and 2 × 165 MHz for dual link. Its example modes include 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz and 1280 × 1024 at 85 Hz for single link, and 2048 × 1536 at 60 Hz and 1920 × 1080 at 85 Hz for dual link. These are examples in the FAQ, reproduced in a document dated October 11, 2008—not universal guarantees for every device or setup. Read the reproduced FAQ.

- IN THE BOX: (1) 6-foot HDMI to DVI cable adapts an HDMI (input) to a DVI (output)
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Works with all HDMI or DVI-D 24+1 equipped devices, also compatible with DVI-I 24+5 equipped devices It cannot support 4K/60 Hz(UHD)
- EASY CONNECTION: Bi-directional cable connects HDMI-equipped devices or connects DVI-equipped devices to HDMI-enabled devices
- DURABLE DESIGN: Gold-plated connectors deliver optimal conductivity; net jacket offers an extra layer of protection
For a specific example, Dell says some high-resolution displays need a dual-link display, dual-link cable, and dual-link graphics output to reach the described 2560 × 1600 mode. That requirement is model-specific; use the relevant Dell documentation and the manuals for your own devices rather than treating the figure as a general DVI limit.
How to check whether a DVI cable or adapter will work
- Identify both ports. Check the source and display for DVI-D, DVI-I, or another connector type. Matching a plug shape is not enough if the ports do not support the same signal.
- Confirm the needed mode. Look up the desired resolution and refresh rate in the source and display specifications. For digital DVI, check whether the devices require single-link or dual-link.
- Match the cable to the complete setup. Use a single-link or dual-link DVI cable that supports the configuration specified by both devices. A dual-link cable cannot add dual-link capability to a single-link source or display.
- Check conversion direction and signal type. A passive DVI-to-VGA adapter needs analog output from the source, such as the analog signals available from a suitable DVI-I port. Digital-only DVI-D cannot provide VGA analog output through a passive adapter.
In practice, the source, cable, adapter (if used), and display all need to support the signal and mode you intend to use. Dell’s dual-link guidance describes why a dual-link display, cable, and graphics output may all be required for a particular high-resolution mode.
