The Dusk & Dawn Essential MK2 is a made-to-order Australian mattress with a five-zone pocket-spring core, foam comfort layers and a choice of firmness. It may suit shoppers who want a spring-and-foam design and a comfort-adjustment guarantee, but its construction details and performance claims come from the manufacturer. CHOICE’s publicly listed Essential mattress is marked discontinued, so its specifications and test information should not be treated as a current MK2 review.
What is the Dusk & Dawn Essential MK2?
Dusk & Dawn describes the Essential MK2 as an Australian-made mattress built to order. The manufacturer lists five-zone, individually encased pocket springs, gel-infused Elasta-Gel comfort foam, high-density/high-resilience comfort foam, a breathable mesh gusset and firmer perimeter coils. It says the spring design is intended to contour to the sleeper and reduce partner disturbance; those are design claims, not guaranteed results for every person.

The listed construction is a spring-and-foam combination rather than an all-foam mattress. The maker describes it as a tailored product, but the public specifications do not establish how it will feel for a particular body type or sleeping position. See the manufacturer’s current Essential MK2 page for its product details.
Which firmness should you choose?
The options below use Dusk & Dawn’s own firmness scale; the numbers are not a universal industry standard. The maker calls Comfy Medium its most popular feel.

CHOICE’s public page is titled “Dusk & Dawn Essential review,” but labels the listed product a discontinued model. It reports a Queen spring mattress with 32.5 cm thickness, 44 kg weight, 12 layers, a A$1,649 price and a 100-day trial. Those details differ from the current MK2 listing, which gives a 32 cm height and size-specific weights. CHOICE’s public page does not show the underlying Expert Rating or detailed test results. Do not use its discontinued-model specifications as if they describe the current MK2.
For context, see CHOICE’s public Essential review page and Dusk & Dawn’s 2 August 2024 announcement. The publicly available information does not establish the current MK2’s detailed CHOICE score.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it—and what should they verify?
- Consider it if you want a made-to-order spring-and-foam mattress and value a choice of named firmness options.
- Compare firmness labels cautiously: the listed numbers reflect the maker’s own scale, not a standardized measure.
- Before buying, verify the selected size, weight, sheet depth, bed-frame support, delivery access and postcode-specific delivery cost.
- Read the guarantee terms rather than relying only on the headline 100-night description.
- Use current-model specifications when comparing mattresses. Do not treat CHOICE’s discontinued Essential entry as a direct specification sheet or current MK2 test report.
