But the format covers everything from consensual profile reviews to public mockery of identifiable strangers—and individual commenters are pushing back against both the repetitive “roast me” prompt and the idea that a stranger’s profile is fair game. The available examples show a tension, not proof that most dating-app users are tired of the trend.
What counts as dating-profile roasting?
It is not one format. Creators may joke about profiles they encounter on an app, participants may submit their profiles for critique, or a video may respond to something someone said about dating. Those distinctions matter: a submitted profile is not the same as an unsolicited public callout, and a response to a public statement is not automatically a profile review.

Unsolicited commentary on app profiles
Narcity reported that Montreal creator Dylan Burrows posted a TikTok joking about men’s Hinge profiles, then made it the first video in a series after it became popular. Burrows joked, “I’ve had Hinge for all of two hours, and I’m gonna have to delete it. It’s f*cking hell out here.” It is a clear example of app-profile frustration becoming serial creator content, but it does not establish how widespread the format is or how many viewers enjoy it. Profiles submitted for critique
Cosmopolitan’s Read My Profile series featured dating profiles submitted by participants for celebrity critique. Submission changes the consent context: the subject has chosen to put a profile forward for review. Responses to public statements
A 2022 George Washington University feature described Drew Afualo’s videos responding to men’s misogynistic, racist, or fatphobic statements. It reported that TikTok removed many videos and temporarily banned her account four times after complaints that a target had been put on blast. The example shows that roast-style response content can prompt complaints and moderation; it does not establish the outcome for every such video or describe TikTok’s current policy. Why the format works as entertainment
Dating profiles are compact performances: a few photos, prompts, and lines are meant to make a stranger seem appealing. That makes them easy to turn into a joke about a familiar frustration—an awkward opener, a puzzling photo, or a prompt that seems to invite teasing. A creator can make that frustration feel recognizable in a short clip, as Burrows’s Hinge series illustrates.

That entertainment value does not depend on every viewer wanting to be the subject. And “content gold” is a framing, not a measured claim about creator earnings, engagement, or the size of the audience. The available reporting provides an example of a series taking off, but no statistic that quantifies the format’s reach or commercial value.
Why some people object to “roast me” prompts
In Reddit discussions, individual commenters objected to seeing invitations such as “roast my profile pic” repeatedly in dating profiles. One wrote, “I can’t even put into words how sick I am of seeing these phrases on profiles.” Another distinguished roasting from banter, saying it can feel like an insult without consent; a separate comment put it this way: “roasting without having knowledge of the other person is just being mean.” These comments capture real objections, but they are not survey results and cannot show how common those views are. The invitation itself can also create a mismatch. A profile prompt may be intended as playful flirtation, while a stranger—or a public audience—may interpret it as permission for a much harsher critique. “Roast me” does not, by itself, tell viewers how far a joke should go or whether the person agreed to have their profile shared beyond the app.
When is a roast a critique, and when does it become a callout?
There is no formal standard in these examples, but four practical questions help distinguish a consensual, potentially useful review from content that chiefly exposes or humiliates someone:

- Was the profile submitted or permission clearly given? A participant-submitted profile, as in Cosmopolitan’s series, has a different consent context from an unsolicited screenshot or recording.
- Can viewers identify the person? Leaving names, faces, handles, or other identifying details visible increases the exposure created by posting. The sources do not establish a legal threshold; this is a practical consideration about the person’s visibility.
- What is the joke aimed at? Critiquing a profile choice is different from attacking a person’s appearance or other personal traits. The GWU feature’s account of Afualo responding to misogynistic, racist, or fatphobic statements is a distinct context from mocking an ordinary profile.
- Does the format offer feedback, or mainly invite humiliation? A review that explains how a prompt might read can serve a different purpose from a clip that presents a stranger as a punchline.
Are people getting sick of profile-roast content?
Some commenters plainly express fatigue with repeated “roast me” language, and some object to roasting without consent. Other examples package profile critique as entertainment, including participant-submitted reviews. That is evidence of mixed reactions in particular discussions and formats—not proof that people generally, or increasingly, dislike profile-roast content. The sources provide no representative measure of audience sentiment or trend size.
The more precise conclusion is that a tension is visible: the same recognizable dating frustrations can make a funny clip, while repetition, lack of consent, and identifying exposure can make the joke feel stale or mean. Whether a particular roast lands depends in part on who agreed to be included, what is being mocked, and how the content is shared.
