Wizards of the Coast has announced the first official D&D and Star Wars collaboration for 2027, alongside a D&D: World of Warcraft expansion scheduled for November 17, 2026. Both projects sit under the new Universes Beyond banner, which also includes renewed attention to classic D&D worlds.
What the “new era” means for Dungeons & Dragons
At Gen Con 2026, Wizards of the Coast presented Universes Beyond as a broader publishing strategy for D&D. The label brings outside fictional universes into the tabletop game while continuing to develop settings that originated within D&D.
The announcement combines two significant moves. D&D: World of Warcraft is scheduled to arrive on November 17, 2026, making it the first Universes Beyond expansion. Wizards then confirmed that Star Wars will come to D&D for the first time in 2027 as part of the Season of Rebellion.

Dan Ayoub, head of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise at Wizards of the Coast, described the plan as an expansion into “even more worlds we love,” while also naming Dark Sun, Dragonlance and Greyhawk as settings the company is revisiting. The slate therefore is not only a licensing initiative: it pairs major external properties with renewed work on D&D’s own history.
When is Star Wars coming to D&D?
The official Star Wars collaboration is planned for 2027. Wizards has not announced a specific launch day, month or retailer preorder schedule in the available announcements.

Which Star Wars D&D books have been announced?
Two physical books have been identified for the Season of Rebellion line. They serve different purposes, so a group will likely need to understand both before deciding what to buy.

| Book | Purpose | Primary audience | Campaign utility | Release timing | Retailer availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D&D Star Wars Core Rules | Rules foundation for playing D&D in the Star Wars setting | Players and Dungeon Masters | Expected to provide the basis for characters and the setting; detailed mechanics are not yet published | 2027 | Not yet verified |
| D&D Star Wars: Tyro Squadron Adventures | Adventure supplement centered on joining a secret Rebel crew | Primarily the Dungeon Master, with the whole group using the scenario | Supplies a Rebel mission that can launch or support a campaign | 2027 | Not yet verified |
The titles indicate a rules-and-adventure package rather than a single setting book. The Core Rules should be the relevant purchase for groups that want to create characters and establish a Star Wars campaign framework. Tyro Squadron Adventures is aimed at groups that want a prepared Rebel-focused story instead of designing the first mission themselves.
Is there an official Star Wars D&D rulebook?
Yes. Wizards has announced D&D Star Wars Core Rules as an official physical book planned for 2027. It is the first announced D&D product built specifically around the Star Wars universe.

- NEW CHARACTER OPTIONS YOU’LL LOVE—Create unforgettable characters with 12 core classes, 48 intriguing subclasses, and 10 distinctive species. Buff up your character’s backstory with 16 compelling backgrounds and 75 fantastic feats
That confirmation does not yet answer how closely the book will resemble current D&D rules. Wizards has not published the rules engine, class structure, Force mechanics, vehicle systems, page count, price, formats or licensing terms in the available material. Claims about Jedi progression, lightsaber rules, starship combat or a particular edition would be speculation until those details are released.
Can you run a Star Wars campaign with these books?
The announced product pairing is intended to support that use, but the practical answer depends on the contents of the Core Rules. A complete campaign normally needs rules for player characters, adversaries, equipment, travel and the setting’s distinctive technologies and powers. The Core Rules are described as the foundation, while Tyro Squadron Adventures supplies a ready-to-run Rebel scenario.

- DUNGEON MASTER'S SCREEN: Helps the Dungeon Master keep die rolls and notes hidden from players. Plus, the inside is filled with quick references for the most commonly used in-game information to help keep things running smoothly..UNLEASH YOUR IMAGINATION: Dungeons & Dragons is a cooperative storytelling game that harnesses your imagination and invites you to explore a fantastic world of adventure, where heroes battle monsters, find treasures, and overcome quests.
Once Wizards publishes the mechanics, groups should check four points before planning a long campaign:
- Character creation: confirm which species, backgrounds, classes or other character options are supported.
- Force rules: determine how Force abilities work, who can use them and how they interact with ordinary D&D actions.
- Vehicles and space travel: look for rules covering starships, fighters, chases and battles.
- Compatibility: verify whether the Star Wars rules require a specific D&D edition or can be combined with existing books.
Until those answers are published, the safest conclusion is that Wizards is preparing an official rules base and a playable adventure, not that every familiar Star Wars mechanic has already been confirmed.

How World of Warcraft fits the strategy
D&D: World of Warcraft is scheduled for November 17, 2026 and is identified as the first Universes Beyond expansion. Its position ahead of Star Wars makes it the initial test of how Wizards will adapt a large external game universe to D&D.
The two announcements also show that Universes Beyond is not replacing classic settings. Wizards has specifically mentioned Dark Sun, Dragonlance and Greyhawk as worlds being revisited. That combination gives players licensed settings and returning D&D settings within the same broader publishing program.
What has not been announced yet
Readers should treat the following as open questions rather than established specifications:
- The exact Star Wars release date in 2027.
- Retailer preorder dates and distribution details.
- Pricing, page counts and digital editions.
- The edition or rules engine used by the Core Rules.
- Classes, species, Force mechanics, weapons, vehicles and starship rules.
- Whether additional Star Wars adventures or supplements will follow.
Those details matter for budgeting and campaign planning, but they were not included in the announcements currently available. The confirmed facts are the 2027 launch window, the Season of Rebellion label and the two named physical books.
What players should watch next
- Look for Wizards’ product pages to confirm the Star Wars publication date, formats and pricing.
- Review the Core Rules contents before assuming compatibility with an existing D&D campaign.
- Check whether Tyro Squadron Adventures is a standalone scenario or expects rules from the Core Rules.
- Follow announcements around Star Wars Celebration in April 2027 for mechanics, art and additional products.
For now, the announcement establishes a clear direction: D&D is becoming a platform for both its own historic settings and formally licensed universes. Star Wars is officially joining that platform in 2027, while World of Warcraft opens the Universes Beyond line in November 2026.
