Choose Dungeon Munchies if you want a side-scrolling action RPG where eating dishes directly grants abilities. Choose Cuisineer if you want dungeon runs to feed a second loop of cooking and running a restaurant. Both make food central, but they are different kinds of games: Dungeon Munchies ties food to character builds, while Cuisineer turns ingredients into restaurant stock and service.
How the games differ
| What matters | Dungeon Munchies | Cuisineer |
|---|---|---|
| Core structure | Side-scrolling action RPG centered on surviving and escaping an underground complex. | Roguelite dungeon crawler with restaurant management between excursions. |

| Additional activities | Combat, escape, and character progression. | Restaurant operation, customization, cooking, and customer service alongside dungeon exploration. |
| Combat and setting | Side-scrolling action in a strange underground setting, with help from undead necro-chef Simmer. | Colorful, food-themed combat using cooking utensils, gear, and flavor powers across procedurally generated biomes. |
Which game makes food more central?
Dungeon Munchies: food changes your abilities
Dungeon Munchies builds its food mechanic directly into the action RPG. You hunt creatures, cook what you find, and eat dishes to gain certain abilities. That makes food a way to shape your character and approach to combat, rather than a separate business to run. Steam lists maJAJa as developer and publisher; the full release arrived on July 27, 2022, after Early Access began on June 5, 2019. Steam’s Dungeon Munchies listing describes the game as a side-scrolling action RPG focused on hunting, cooking, and eating for abilities.

Cuisineer: food connects the dungeon to a restaurant
In Cuisineer, Pom returns to Paell to reopen her parents’ indebted restaurant. Dungeon expeditions provide ingredients; cooking turns them into menu items, and restaurant service gives those dishes a purpose beyond combat. Marvelous Games says the game has more than 100 recipes and procedurally generated biomes whose size, shape, and resources change between visits. Flavor powers include Salty, Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Umami, Frosty, and Toasty. Marvelous Games’ official Cuisineer page presents it as a roguelite and management game developed by BattleBrew Productions.

Pick Dungeon Munchies if you want
- A side-scrolling action campaign rather than a dungeon-and-management cycle.
- Food to affect your abilities directly as part of character progression.
- A focused premise about staying fed, fighting, and escaping an underground complex.
Pick Cuisineer if you want
- Dungeon crawling to alternate with running a restaurant.
- Cooking, serving customers, and customizing the establishment as well as fighting.
- A broad recipe system and changing procedural biomes as part of the loop.
If you are undecided, ask whether managing the restaurant sounds like a compelling second half. If so, Cuisineer is the closer fit. If you would rather keep food tightly connected to action and abilities, Dungeon Munchies is the more direct choice.

- Big Menu for a Big Stomach - With a stomach that can only take seven dishes, you must put together a meal that maximises your abilities. Guava juice, grilled shrimp, or crab stirfry may mean the difference between health recovery, damage output or a watery shield!
- Tools of the Trade - Craft all kinds of deadly weapons out of the animal and plant parts you can’t eat. Pair them with your favorite dishes to create the most overpowered combat combo!
- Farm-fresh & Locally-sourced - In this day and age, ingredients are hard to come by. Be prepared to face off electriacl snails, razor-sharp shrimp claws, and laser wasps to get the delicious parts you need!
- Something Doesn’t Feel Right… - From the self-professed-AAA-license-holding necro-chef, to the diabolical voodoo “Lord of the Forest”, to the radical revolutionaries of the fruit revolution, everyone wants you to do their thing, but no one’s really right in the head. What’s really happening down in this dungeon?
What storefront reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Steam review percentages are changing snapshots of user sentiment, not a controlled comparison of the two games. On October 7, 2026, the Dungeon Munchies listing showed 94% positive among 910 English reviews. Cuisineer showed 76% positive among 1,823 total reviews overall, with recent reviews at 64% positive among 14. Physical editions
Physical-edition details can depend on region and current stock. XSEED’s Cuisineer Day 1 edition listing describes a package with the game, original soundtrack, a 160-plus-page softcover art book, and an 8-by-11-inch towel in a custom box. See XSEED’s Cuisineer page and confirm contents and availability with a current regional retailer. A secondary report says Dungeon Munchies received physical editions for Switch, PS4, and PS5, but the available information here does not establish current stock or regional listings; verify with a retailer before buying.
