Madan Mitra has not announced a resignation or retirement. In a report published on October 1, 2026, Hindustan Times said the rebel Trinamool Congress MLA was trying to decide how gradually he might withdraw from active politics, after expressing growing disillusionment with it.
Is Madan Mitra quitting politics?
Not formally, according to the October 1 report. Mitra said he was considering a gradual withdrawal; the report does not say he had resigned from the Assembly, left the party or completed a retirement from politics. His remarks describe a decision under consideration, not a settled outcome.

What did Mitra say about politics?
Hindustan Times attributed these comments to Mitra, reporting that PTI had reported his remarks: “Politics has become the last resort of people, though not everyone. It has become a dumping ground for anti-social elements.” He also said: “I am personally taking a decision, or trying to take a decision, about how gradually I can withdraw from politics. Because with every passing day, nothing except my hatred for politics is increasing.”

The “dumping ground” phrase is Mitra’s criticism, not an independently established description of political life. The report described him as having spent nearly 30 years in politics.

Why is a TMC rebel MLA considering withdrawal?
The report placed his remarks against a split within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). It said Mitra had stepped down from organisational responsibilities, joined a rebel camp associated with Ritabrata Banerjee, and remained an MLA representing Kamarhati. It also reported that he retained his seat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Hindustan Times said the comments came ahead of by-elections scheduled for October 6, 2026, in Nandigram and Rejinagar. That is the political context reported on October 1; it does not establish what happened in those by-elections or what developments followed.

Mitra’s political background
According to Hindustan Times, Mitra joined Mamata Banerjee when she founded the TMC in 1998 and served as sports and transport minister in her first government. The report said he resigned as minister in 2014 after the CBI arrested him in connection with the Saradha chit fund case. It also said he was questioned and arrested in connection with the Narada sting operation, and that he denied wrongdoing in both cases. Arrests and investigations are not findings of guilt; the report does not establish the outcomes of those cases.

The article also reported, attributing the information to PTI, that the Enforcement Directorate summoned Mitra’s wife and two sons for questioning on July 14 in a money-laundering probe into an alleged municipal recruitment scam and searched seven locations. Those reported investigative steps do not establish wrongdoing by any person or the probe’s current status.
