Duckweed and Wolffia Aquarium Care: Light, Water, and Tank Settings

Duckweed and Wolffia are floating freshwater plants that generally suit calm or slow-moving aquarium water. Give them access to light, but watch how much of the surface they cover: a thick mat can shade plants below. Wolffia is rootless and grain-like, while typical duckweed has small dangling roots, so identify the plant before applying species-specific advice.

How to tell duckweed from Wolffia

“Duckweed” is often used broadly, but it is not another name for Wolffia. Wolffia, also called watermeal, consists of tiny rootless, grain-like plants floating at the surface. Typical duckweed has small roots hanging beneath its leaves. Common names can overlap, so check the plant’s identity when buying a starter culture or looking up care details. North Carolina State Extension’s Wolffia profile describes the plant’s form and habitat.

Feature Typical duckweed Wolffia (watermeal)
Visible form Small floating leaves with dangling roots Tiny, grain-like floating plants
Roots Has small roots Rootless
Surface habitat Floating freshwater plant; surface conditions and growth vary Still to slowly moving freshwater
Shared care consideration Both can spread across the surface; dense cover can shade submerged plants.

What light and water movement do they need?

Provide light, then monitor the plants below

Light supports growth, and bright light can help Wolffia grow quickly in favorable conditions. The available sources do not establish a universal aquarium photoperiod or light-intensity target, so avoid treating a particular number of hours as a rule. Instead, observe the floating plants and the submerged plants sharing the tank: if the surface mat is blocking too much light below, thin it.

Keep the surface relatively calm

Wolffia is described as growing on still to slowly moving water. That supports choosing a relatively calm surface, but it does not mean every filter must be turned off or all water movement eliminated. The sources do not define a required flow rate for aquariums. Floating plants take nutrients from the water rather than the aquarium bed, so their growth depends in part on conditions in the water column.

How fast can Wolffia grow?

North Carolina Extension says Wolffia can double in size every two days under favorable conditions such as warm water and bright light. That is a conditional growth rate, not a promise for every aquarium. Duckweed growth also varies with factors including light, pH, temperature, carbon dioxide, nutrient availability, and crowding. A tank’s results therefore depend on its conditions rather than one setting that works everywhere. NC State Extension: Wolffia; Aquarium Co-Op: Duckweed.

How to manage surface coverage

A dense layer of floating plants can reduce the light reaching submerged plants. Keep enough open surface for light to pass through, and remove some floating growth if plants below begin to lose light. Coverage is something to monitor and adjust as the plants grow, rather than a fixed percentage established for every aquarium.

Which tank settings should you use?

The cited sources do not establish universal aquarium-specific numbers for temperature, pH, hardness, light duration, or tank size for duckweed and Wolffia. Do not treat pond or cultivation figures as guaranteed aquarium targets. Begin with the qualitative guidance—light, relatively calm surface water, and manageable coverage—and observe how the plants and tank respond. Growth depends on several interacting conditions, including nutrients, temperature, light, and crowding.

Choosing a starter plant

If you want to try one, look for a live aquarium plant listing that identifies the plant clearly. Sellers may use “duckweed” broadly, so confirm whether the starter is typical rooted duckweed or rootless Wolffia before relying on species-specific care information.
