Choose Duck.ai if privacy-oriented defaults, several third-party models, and the ability to keep AI optional matter most. Choose Gemini if you need Google-connected workflows, rich file and media inputs, screen interactions, image editing, or video generation. Neither choice is universally better: Duck.ai’s privacy position is based on DuckDuckGo’s published design and exceptions, while Gemini offers broader integrations with account-linked controls, retention rules, and possible human review.
What you are comparing
Duck.ai, the service formerly commonly called DuckDuckGo AI Chat, is DuckDuckGo’s interface for conversations with models supplied by outside providers. Google Gemini is Google’s assistant and chat service, with its own models and connections to Google products. Both can answer questions, summarize text, draft content, and handle general conversation. Their documented differences are more consequential than a simple feature checklist: how chats are retained, who supplies the model, what information can be connected, and whether AI is optional or embedded in a broader account workflow.

This is a policy-and-capability comparison, not a head-to-head quality test. No current independent benchmark establishes that one service is more accurate, faster, or more reliable overall. A model that is excellent for coding may not be the best choice for summarizing a long document, and an integrated assistant may be more useful than a standalone chatbot even when the underlying answer quality is similar.

Privacy: the important differences
Duck.ai’s default and its exceptions
DuckDuckGo states that, by default, Duck.ai does not record or store chats and that conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying providers. That is a company commitment, not an independent audit of every provider or configuration.
#1 Best Overall
There are explicit exceptions. You can deliberately share a conversation as feedback. Sync & Backup and some optional features store chats in end-to-end encrypted form; DuckDuckGo says it cannot read those backups. The Recent Chats feature keeps history locally on your device rather than on DuckDuckGo’s remote servers. You can remove individual chats or clear them with the Fire Button, and pin up to five chats.
DuckDuckGo also describes a privacy-preserving matching step. It computes an embedding of a prompt in memory to match it with a representative prompt from an open dataset, then discards the submitted prompt embedding immediately after matching. The matched open-source prompt and anonymous aggregate interaction statistics can be retained. Therefore, “not stored by default” does not mean that no technical information is ever processed.
Provider choice does not eliminate provider-level rules. DuckDuckGo says it does not filter or modify the responses produced by the models it exposes. Each model can therefore have different moderation behavior, context limits, style, and failure modes. DuckDuckGo warns that responses may be inaccurate or offensive, and the underlying provider’s moderation policies still apply.
Gemini’s controls, retention and review
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice applies to signed-in use and supplements Google’s general Privacy Policy. It says Gemini may process prompts, uploaded files and media, generated content, information from connected apps, device or app context where applicable, and location. Google says those categories can be used to provide, maintain, improve, develop, personalize, and customize services.
Keep Activity, auto-delete, and activity review controls affect what is associated with your account, but turning Keep Activity off does not stop processing needed to answer requests or protect Google, users, and the public. Google says chats made with Keep Activity off, and Temporary chats, are retained with the account for 72 hours for those purposes. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models. With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to improve AI models unless you submit feedback.
Human review remains possible in Google’s documented process. Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years, and that deleting activity does not delete this reviewed data. Google’s own notice therefore advises against entering confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve its services, including machine-learning technologies.
How to interpret “more private”
Privacy is not one switch. Compare six questions before choosing:
Recommended Free Tools
- Are chats stored remotely, and for how long?
- Can content be used for model training or broader product improvement?
- Can human reviewers see selected conversations?
- Are you signed in, and which account controls apply?
- Will files, connected services, device context, or location be supplied?
- What exceptions apply when you share feedback or enable backups?
On those criteria, Duck.ai offers the less account-centered default for ordinary chats, while Gemini offers more detailed account controls around a service that can process a much broader set of connected information. Do not treat either consumer service as a confidential vault for trade secrets, medical records, credentials, or other material that would cause harm if exposed.
Rank #2
A common mistake is to compare only a setting label. “Keep Activity off” does not mean Gemini stops processing a prompt, and “Temporary” does not mean a chat disappears instantly or is anonymous. Conversely, Duck.ai’s no-storage default does not cover a conversation that you intentionally submit as feedback, a backup you enable, or the local history saved in your browser or device. Read the exception that accompanies each control.
Duck.ai’s model choices and optional AI
Models listed for free access
DuckDuckGo’s current model page lists these free options:
| Model | Provider or host as listed | Availability note |
|---|---|---|
| Claude 4.5 Haiku | Anthropic | Listed in Duck.ai’s free lineup. |
| Mistral Small 4 | Mistral AI | Listed in Duck.ai’s free lineup. |
| GPT-5.4 nano | OpenAI | Listed in Duck.ai’s free lineup. |
| GPT-5.4 mini | OpenAI | Listed in Duck.ai’s free lineup. |
| gpt-oss-120b | Tinfoil hosting | Listed in Duck.ai’s free lineup. |
| Gemma 4 31B | Tinfoil hosting | Listed in Duck.ai’s free lineup. |
Model names and availability can change. A model selector changes which model generates the answer; it does not make every model behave identically. DuckDuckGo says it does not filter or modify these models’ responses and warns that they may be inaccurate or offensive. The relevant provider’s moderation rules still apply.
Multiple models are useful when you want a second perspective without opening another service. For example, you can ask one model for a concise outline, switch models to challenge the assumptions, and then use a third for rewriting. This is a workflow convenience, not proof that one model is objectively superior. Keep the same prompt and constraints when comparing outputs, and verify important claims independently.
Paid tiers and what is documented
DuckDuckGo says its Plus tier adds GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 4.6. Pro adds Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol, offers higher reasoning effort than Plus, and provides twice the Plus usage limits. The reviewed official material does not establish a current dollar price, billing period, or regional availability, so verify the checkout page for your country before treating these as a purchasing comparison.
“Higher reasoning effort” is a setting or capacity distinction, not a guarantee of better answers for every task. Check whether your intended work actually needs the additional model access, quota, or reasoning setting. If you mostly ask short factual questions, a free model may be sufficient; long documents, complex analysis, and repeated daily use are more likely to expose usage limits.
Keeping AI under your control
DuckDuckGo presents AI as optional. Search Assist can be set to “often,” “sometimes,” “on-demand,” or “never.” If you want conventional search results with assistance only when requested, “on-demand” or “never” limits automatic AI involvement. This is useful for readers who want the privacy-oriented search product without making generated answers the default layer over every query.

You can use Duck.ai directly while keeping automatic assistance off in search, or leave Search Assist on and still switch models when a task calls for a different style. That separation helps prevent accidental AI use while preserving access when it is genuinely useful.

Gemini’s connected and multimodal workflow
Connected Apps and context
Gemini is designed for tasks that depend on Google services or richer context. Google documents Connected Apps and says Gemini may process information from connected Google or third-party services. The exact services and actions available depend on your account, settings, app permissions, region, and eligibility.
This can reduce copying and pasting. A user might ask Gemini to work from material in a connected service rather than manually moving it into a chat. The trade-off is that the prompt is no longer the only input: connected-service information, app context, and possibly location or device context can become part of processing. Review each connection instead of enabling every integration by default.
Files, screens, images and video
Google documents sharing files and media, image editing, video generation, screen-based interactions, and some Search-grounded responses. These capabilities can make Gemini the more practical choice when the task is not just “write an answer” but “work with this presentation,” “interpret this image,” “edit this picture,” “help with what is on my screen,” or “generate a video.” Feature access and limits are not universal; check the control shown in your account before planning a workflow around it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Multimodal convenience also creates more ways to overshare. A screenshot can contain names, notifications, browser tabs, hidden metadata, or another person’s information. A video or document may include material you are not authorized to submit. Crop or redact inputs where possible, and confirm that the connected app or account has permission to provide the material.
Permissions are part of the feature
A connected workflow necessarily supplies more context than a standalone text prompt. Before enabling a connection, review which app can provide data, what actions Gemini may take, and whether the material includes information belonging to other people. Disconnect services you no longer use and avoid uploading files merely to test a feature.
Search grounding can improve freshness for some questions, but it does not remove the need to check citations or primary sources. Treat generated summaries of connected documents and search results as drafts. For legal, financial, medical, security, or operational decisions, verify the underlying source and preserve the original record.
How to configure each service safely
Duck.ai setup
- Open Duck.ai and inspect the model selector before starting a sensitive or important task.
- Choose the model whose capabilities and provider policy fit the task; switching models can produce different answers.
- Set Search Assist frequency to “on-demand” or “never” if you do not want automatic AI assistance in search.
- Use Recent Chats knowing that this history is stored locally on your device. Delete individual entries or use the Fire Button when appropriate.
- Enable Sync & Backup only if you need cross-device recovery and accept that encrypted chat backups will be stored. DuckDuckGo says it cannot read them.
- Do not share a conversation as feedback unless you understand that sharing is an exception to the default no-storage posture.
Gemini setup
- Open Gemini’s account activity controls and identify whether Keep Activity is on, off, or governed by an auto-delete setting.
- Use Temporary chat when you do not want the conversation used to train Google’s AI models, while remembering that Google says it is still retained for 72 hours.
- If Keep Activity is off, remember that Google still processes chats needed to respond and protect users; future chats are not used to improve models unless you submit feedback.
- Review Connected Apps and remove permissions that are not necessary for the task.
- Check whether a prompt includes files, media, screen content, device context, or location before sending it.
- Do not enter confidential information that you would not want a reviewer to see. Google says reviewed chats and related data may remain for up to three years.
For either service, separate experimentation from production work. Use a non-sensitive sample to learn the interface, then create a repeatable checklist for real tasks: confirm the model, inspect attachments, check sharing settings, and decide how the final answer will be verified and stored.

There is no defensible price-versus-price verdict from the official information reviewed here. Duck.ai clearly has free models and paid tiers, but the current dollar prices were not established. The reviewed Gemini sources likewise do not establish current plan names, prices, usage limits, or regional availability. AI plans change frequently, and a price shown in one country or account may not apply elsewhere.
For a purchase decision, check the official plan or checkout page while signed in, record the currency and date, and compare the limits that affect your work: messages, file size, model access, reasoning settings, image or video generation, and connected-app availability. Do not infer that a higher tier is better for your prompts without checking which model and quota it actually includes.
Also compare the cost of changing workflows. Duck.ai may save time when you need to test several providers in one interface. Gemini may save time when files already live in Google services and can be used without manual export. Those are workflow benefits, not verified monetary savings, and they depend on your account permissions and how often you use the features.

When neither is the right answer
If your organization requires contractual confidentiality, audit rights, administrator controls, data-residency guarantees, or a verified retention policy, a consumer chat service may not meet the requirement. The policies described here do not establish those guarantees. Use a service approved for your data classification instead of assuming that a privacy-oriented default is equivalent to enterprise confidentiality.
Questions readers often ask
Is Duck.ai more private than Gemini?
Duck.ai has the less account-centered default for ordinary chats: DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default and are not used to train models, with documented exceptions. Gemini provides more account controls but processes prompts and potentially connected-app, device, location, file, and media information. “More private” depends on which data, retention, review, and account factors matter to you.
Does Gemini save my chats?
It can. Google says Temporary chats and chats made with Keep Activity off are retained with the account for 72 hours. Chats selected for human review and related data may be retained for up to three years, even if activity is later deleted. Review the current Gemini controls rather than assuming every conversation has the same retention.
Can I use Gemini without chats being used for training?
Google says Temporary chats are not used to train its AI models. With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to improve models unless you submit feedback. Those settings do not stop processing needed to answer requests or protect users, and they do not make the chat instantly disappear.
What models can I use for free in Duck.ai?
The listed free lineup includes Claude 4.5 Haiku, Mistral Small 4, GPT-5.4 nano, GPT-5.4 mini, gpt-oss-120b, and Gemma 4 31B. DuckDuckGo can change that lineup, so check the model selector for current availability.
Does Duck.ai guarantee that answers are safe or accurate?
No. DuckDuckGo says it does not filter or modify model responses and warns that answers may be inaccurate or offensive. Provider moderation policies apply, and important claims should be checked independently.
Best Value
Can I use Duck.ai without storing any chat history?
DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default, while Recent Chats history is stored locally on your device. Optional Sync & Backup stores encrypted backups, and feedback sharing is an explicit exception. Delete local entries or use the Fire Button when you no longer need them.
Which is better for working with a file or screen?
Gemini is the clearer documented fit because Google lists file and media sharing, screen-based interactions, image editing, and video generation for eligible users. Confirm feature availability and permissions in your account, and remove sensitive material from screenshots or files before uploading.
Which one is cheaper?
A reliable current answer requires checking official plan pages for your country and account. Duck.ai has free and paid tiers, while the information summarized here does not establish current Gemini prices, limits, or regional availability. Compare the quota and features you actually need, not just the headline subscription price.
What this comparison cannot establish
Neither service can be ranked for raw intelligence, factual accuracy, speed, or reliability without a current, controlled test using the same prompts, models, settings, regions, and dates. Model lineups, Gemini features, privacy controls, usage limits, and terms can change. Recheck the official Duck.ai and Gemini pages before making a long-term workflow or subscription decision.
