Short answer: choose the blanket-lined J01 Detroit when you need a relatively light, short duck jacket for cooler conditions and easy tool-belt access. Choose an insulated Active Jac such as the J130 or Bartlett when colder weather, a hood and higher stated warmth matter more than the J01’s lower-warmth design. The crucial distinction is that duck describes the outer fabric; it does not tell you how warm the jacket is.
All three examples use a cotton-duck shell, but their linings, insulation amounts, coverage and fit differ. Compare the complete garment—not just the word “duck” or the shell’s ounce weight—to match your work and everyday conditions.

What “duck canvas” and “insulated” mean
In Carhartt’s terminology, duck is a tightly woven cotton shell fabric. A duck jacket can be blanket-lined, quilt-lined or insulated. “Insulated” means the garment adds a separate layer of thermal fill, such as synthetic insulation, beneath the shell and lining. It does not mean the shell is made from a different, non-duck material.

Carhartt’s displayed warmth levels are useful for ranking these particular models, but they are not a universal temperature scale. The manufacturer does not publish a safe minimum temperature for the J01, J130 or Bartlett, and no independent field test establishes one. Wind, precipitation, activity level, base layers, fit and personal tolerance can change how warm any jacket feels.
At-a-glance comparison
| Model | Shell | Lining or insulation | Displayed warmth | Coverage and mobility features | Fit and best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J01 Iconic Duck Detroit | 12-ounce, 100% ringspun cotton duck | Blanket lining in the body; quilted nylon sleeves | Level 1; for cooler conditions | Pleated bi-swing back, snap-adjustable cuffs, droptail hem, short Detroit cut | Relaxed fit; useful when a shorter jacket leaves room for a tool belt |
| J130 Washed Duck Insulated Active Jac | 12-ounce washed cotton duck | Quilted nylon lining with 80 g 3M Thinsulate featherless insulation | Level 3; engineered for high warmth in severely cold conditions | Attached hood, rib-knit storm cuffs, elbow pleats | Insulated cold-weather option for people who need more coverage and warmth |
| Bartlett Washed Duck Insulated Active Jac | 12-ounce ringspun cotton soft duck | 100 g polyester insulation through the body, sleeves and hood | Level 3 | Attached adjustable hood, reinforced cuffs | Loose fit; suitable when layering room and full-garment insulation are priorities |
The figures in this table are the specifications and labels Carhartt gives for these named models. They should not be read as a laboratory comparison between insulation types: 80 g of featherless insulation and 100 g of polyester are different constructions, and the pages do not provide a standardized test showing that one is warmer than the other.
J01 Detroit: a lower-warmth duck layer
Construction and warmth
The J01 Detroit uses a 12-ounce, 100% ringspun cotton duck shell. Its body is blanket-lined, while the sleeves use quilted nylon. Carhartt assigns it Level 1 warmth and describes that level for cooler conditions. This combination gives you a lined duck outer layer without the insulation package used in the Active Jac examples.
The shell weight alone does not make the J01 a heavy winter coat. A 12-ounce duck shell describes the fabric, not the amount of thermal fill. The blanket body lining adds some warmth, but the product information does not establish a temperature threshold or promise that it will replace an insulated coat in severe cold.
Movement, length and work details
A pleated bi-swing back is designed to provide additional reach when you bend or extend your arms. Snap-adjustable cuffs let you close the sleeve opening, and the droptail hem adds coverage below the waist. The Detroit’s shorter cut can be useful around a tool belt, where a longer coat may interfere with equipment at the hips.

Those details make the J01 a practical choice for active work in cool weather, driving, workshop use or everyday wear when you want a defined jacket rather than a heavily insulated parka. Its relaxed fit leaves room for ordinary layers, but you should still try the intended base and mid-layer combination before relying on it for a full winter setup.
Who should pick the J01
- You mostly work or commute in cool conditions rather than the coldest part of winter.
- You prefer a shorter jacket and want room for a tool belt.
- You need shoulder movement from the bi-swing back.
- You want a blanket-lined duck shell instead of the higher insulation level of an Active Jac.
- You expect to add or remove layers as your activity level changes.
Carhartt’s own product-page wording is: “Choose the Detroit Jacket when you want durability and warmth without the weight of a heavily insulated coat.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning for the J01, not an independent comparative test.

J130 Washed Duck Insulated Active Jac: high warmth with 3M Thinsulate featherless fill
Insulation and coverage
The J130 combines a 12-ounce washed cotton duck shell with a quilted nylon lining and 80 g of 3M Thinsulate featherless insulation. Carhartt labels it Level 3, the highest displayed warmth tier in this comparison, and describes it as engineered for high warmth in severely cold conditions.
The insulation is part of the body of the jacket rather than merely a light lining. An attached hood extends coverage above the collar, while rib-knit storm cuffs close the sleeve ends. Elbow pleats support arm movement during work that requires reaching, lifting or bending the elbows.
When its design makes sense
Choose the J130 when cold exposure is a primary concern and you want a hood attached to the jacket rather than a separate hat or shell. The storm cuffs are also relevant if you dislike an open sleeve gap over gloves. If you spend much of the day moving between indoor and outdoor spaces, remember that a Level 3 insulated jacket may be more warmth than you need indoors; a layering system that lets you remove the jacket can be more comfortable than wearing it continuously.

The J130’s 80 g figure identifies the amount of its specified insulation, not a direct temperature promise. Compare it with the garment’s fit, hood, cuffs and your expected activity instead of treating “80 g” as a universal rating that can be converted into a precise outdoor temperature.

How it differs from the J130
The Bartlett is another Level 3 insulated Active Jac, but its construction is not identical to the J130. Carhartt lists 100 g of polyester insulation through the body, sleeves and hood. It uses 12-ounce ringspun cotton soft duck, has an attached adjustable hood and includes reinforced cuffs.
Because the Bartlett puts the stated insulation through the body, sleeves and hood, it is a useful choice for someone who wants the hood and the rest of the garment treated as part of one insulated system. The loose fit can also accommodate more substantial layers than a closer-fitting jacket, although the correct size depends on your measurements and the layers you actually wear.
When to favor the Bartlett
- You want a loose fit with deliberate room for layering.
- You prefer an adjustable attached hood.
- You want 100 g polyester insulation specified for the body, sleeves and hood.
- You value reinforced cuffs for work use.
- You need a Level 3 option but prefer the Bartlett’s feature set to the J130’s storm cuffs and elbow pleats.
Do not assume that “insulated Active Jac” identifies one standard fill. The J130 uses 80 g 3M Thinsulate featherless insulation, while the Bartlett uses 100 g polyester. The model number and full specification determine what you are buying.

1. Estimate the conditions without inventing a temperature rating
- Cool conditions, intermittent outdoor exposure: the J01’s Level 1 design may provide the balance of a lined shell and easier venting.
- Cold or severely cold exposure: the J130 or Bartlett has the higher Level 3 label and dedicated insulation.
- Variable conditions: consider whether you can remove the jacket, add a mid-layer or switch to a lighter shell during indoor work.
These are relative choices among the three models. They are not a promise that Level 1 or Level 3 corresponds to a particular air temperature.
2. Decide how much coverage you need
The J01 has the shorter Detroit profile and a droptail hem. The J130 and Bartlett add attached hoods; the Bartlett’s hood is adjustable, while the J130 is paired with rib-knit storm cuffs. A hood is valuable if you regularly work in wind, precipitation or exposed areas, but it can be unnecessary if you wear head protection that conflicts with an attached hood.
3. Match insulation to your activity level
Standing still for long periods generally demands more insulation than continuous physical work, because movement produces body heat. Conversely, a heavily insulated jacket can feel excessive when you are carrying, climbing or moving between heated buildings. The product pages document the insulation and warmth tiers; they do not measure comfort for every activity. Use your own routine to decide whether Level 3 coverage is appropriate.
4. Check fit and layering room
The J01 is described as relaxed fit, the Bartlett as loose fit, and both Active Jac examples are intended to accommodate cold-weather use. Decide what you will wear underneath: a T-shirt and flannel need less room than a thermal base layer, fleece and work shirt. Try the jacket while reaching forward, raising both arms and bending at the waist. A sleeve that rides up or a shoulder that binds can make a theoretically warm jacket impractical.

5. Compare movement features
The J01’s bi-swing back and the J130’s elbow pleats address arm mobility in different ways. The J01 also has snap cuffs and a droptail hem; the J130 adds storm cuffs; the Bartlett specifies reinforced cuffs. If you use gloves, operate tools or reach overhead, pay attention to cuff closure and elbow movement rather than shell weight alone.

Which model fits common use cases?
| Your situation | Most logical starting point | Reason | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cool-weather workshop or job site where a tool belt is common | J01 Detroit | Level 1 warmth, shorter Detroit cut and bi-swing back | Whether your planned layers are enough for the coldest part of the shift |
| Long outdoor shifts in cold or severely cold conditions | J130 or Bartlett | Both carry Carhartt’s Level 3 label and dedicated insulation | Hood preference, cuff design and the amount of movement required |
| You want an attached hood with storm-cuff coverage | J130 | Attached hood, rib-knit storm cuffs and elbow pleats | Whether 80 g featherless insulation suits your layering system |
| You want insulation specified through the hood and sleeves with a loose fit | Bartlett | 100 g polyester in body, sleeves and hood; loose fit | Hood adjustment and sizing over your mid-layers |
| Everyday use where you frequently move indoors | J01, unless your outdoor exposure is severe | Lower Level 1 warmth is less committed than a Level 3 insulated design | Wind, rain and how often you can remove the jacket |
A simple decision process
- Write down the coldest realistic part of your use. Consider early starts, wind-exposed areas and how long you remain outside, but do not convert the models into an unverified temperature chart.
- Choose the warmth tier. Select the J01 for the lower Level 1 category; select the J130 or Bartlett for Level 3 insulation intended for colder conditions.
- Choose coverage. If you need an attached hood, remove the J01 from consideration and compare the J130’s hood and storm cuffs with the Bartlett’s adjustable hood.
- Choose the fit for your layers. Measure over the clothing you will actually wear. The Bartlett’s loose fit may be useful for bulky layers; the J01’s relaxed fit may suit a lighter system.
- Test movement before removing tags. Reach, bend, lift your arms and close the cuffs over your gloves. Reject a size that restricts the work you perform.
- Confirm the exact model and care label. Similar names do not guarantee identical insulation, lining or washing instructions.
Layering with a duck jacket
A jacket’s warmth depends on the entire clothing system. With the J01, you can use a base layer and a removable mid-layer when conditions vary. The jacket’s blanket-lined body and quilted sleeves are part of the system, but they do not replace the added insulation found in the Active Jac models.
With the J130 or Bartlett, account for the insulation already built into the body, sleeves and—in the Bartlett’s specification—the hood. Adding a thick mid-layer may improve comfort in severe cold, but it can also reduce arm mobility if the jacket is sized too closely. A larger size is not automatically warmer if it leaves large openings at the cuffs, neck or hem, so evaluate closure and movement together.
Use the hood when it improves coverage, but check compatibility with helmets, hard hats, hearing protection or other headgear required for your work. An attached hood that cannot be positioned comfortably may be less useful than a separate layer, even when the jacket itself is warm.

J01 care directions
The J01 listing specifies the following care:
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Use mild detergent.
- Do not use bleach.
- Tumble dry on low and remove promptly.
- Do not iron.
- Do not dry clean.
These instructions apply to the cited J01 listing. Follow the sewn-in label on your own garment if it differs, particularly for the J130 or Bartlett. Insulation, trims, colors and later production runs can have model-specific instructions.
Practical care checks
- Close snaps, zippers and cuffs before washing so hardware is less likely to catch on the fabric.
- Use only the detergent and water temperature permitted by the label; do not substitute bleach or solvent cleaning.
- Remove the jacket promptly at the end of a low-heat cycle rather than leaving it compressed in the dryer.
- Inspect cuffs, hood attachments, seams and the droptail hem after washing, especially if the jacket is used around tools or machinery.
Price, availability and what to verify on a product page
The J01 listing associated with these specifications showed a price of $139.99. Treat that as a listing snapshot, not a guaranteed current price: size, color, seller, promotions and date can change the amount. The supplied product information does not state prices for the J130 or Bartlett, so a comparison that assigns them a specific cost would be guesswork.
Before ordering, verify the complete model name and the specification block rather than relying on a photograph or a shortened title. Confirm:
- Model number: J01, J130 or Bartlett.
- Shell description and ounce weight.
- Type and amount of insulation, if present.
- Warmth level and intended conditions.
- Hood, cuff and hem construction.
- Fit category and the size chart for the current listing.
- Care instructions on the actual garment or current product page.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming every duck jacket is equally warm | Duck identifies the shell, while lining and insulation vary substantially | Compare the warmth level and insulation construction for the exact model |
| Choosing by the 12-ounce shell weight alone | The shell weight does not state how much thermal fill the garment contains | Check whether the jacket is blanket-lined or specifies 80 g or 100 g insulation |
| Treating all insulated Active Jac jackets as identical | J130 and Bartlett use different insulation and feature packages | Read the model-specific fill, hood and cuff details |
| Expecting a precise safe temperature | Carhartt’s Level 1 and Level 3 labels are not a universal temperature chart | Account for wind, activity, layers and personal tolerance |
| Ignoring movement while sizing | A warm jacket that binds at the shoulders or elbows can hinder work | Test reaching, bending and glove-compatible cuff closure |
| Using one care routine for every model | Care directions can differ by garment | Follow the exact sewn-in label, including wash temperature and drying method |
Bottom-line recommendation
Pick the J01 Detroit if your priority is a shorter, relaxed-fit duck jacket with blanket lining, a bi-swing back and Level 1 warmth for cooler conditions. Pick the J130 if you want Level 3 warmth, an attached hood, 80 g 3M Thinsulate featherless insulation, storm cuffs and elbow pleats. Pick the Bartlett if you prefer a loose fit, an adjustable hood and 100 g polyester insulation through the body, sleeves and hood. In every case, match the jacket to your actual layers and work movements rather than assuming that the word “duck” determines warmth.
