For the easiest walk-off visit, Kotor usually has the edge when your ship docks at one of its berths beside the Old Town. Its bay is part of the arrival, too. Dubrovnik is the stronger choice if its famous walled Old Town is your priority and you are happy to plan a transfer from the cruise port in Gruž. Check your specific call: Kotor ships may anchor in the bay, and Dubrovnik’s transfer times vary with traffic.

When Kotor is the better day trip
You want to walk straight into the historic center
Kotor’s two cruise berths are reported to be near the Old Town, in front of its walls. That can make the ship-to-town leg unusually simple when your vessel is alongside. The port also reports three anchorages in the bay, however, so the convenient walk-off scenario is not guaranteed for every call. Check the Port of Kotor’s information and your cruise itinerary for the arrangement listed for your ship.

You value the bay as part of the visit
Kotor’s setting can make the arrival itself part of the port day, rather than just a route to the town. The Port of Kotor describes the bay as UNESCO-listed natural heritage and says cruising through it is a distinctive attraction. Port of Kotor

When Dubrovnik is the better day trip
The Old Town is your main priority
Choose Dubrovnik if seeing its Old Town matters more to you than having the shortest walk from ship to center. The cruise port is in Gruž, so include a separate trip to the Old Town in your day plan. The Port Authority estimates a 30–40 minute walk, a 10–15 minute bus ride to Pile depending on traffic, or a 7–10 minute taxi ride depending on traffic. It says buses run every 10–20 minutes; check current details before travelling because schedules and fares can change. Port of Dubrovnik: Getting to Dubrovnik Old Town

You prefer a transport option to the walk
The Port Authority lists buses and taxis for the Gruž-to-center journey. Its facilities information also lists organized bus transport on the port–Old Town route. Treat that as an available option, not confirmation that your particular cruise includes a transfer. Port of Dubrovnik · Port facilities
How to choose for your actual sailing
- Check the port arrangement. For Kotor, find out whether your ship docks or anchors in the bay. Do not assume the ship will be beside the Old Town walls. Port of Kotor
- Work out your usable time ashore. In Dubrovnik, account for the Gruž-to-Old-Town trip as well as the time needed to return to the ship. Bus and taxi estimates are traffic-dependent. Port of Dubrovnik
- Choose based on what you want the day to feel like. Favor Kotor for easy access to a compact center and a bay-focused arrival; favor Dubrovnik when its Old Town is the draw worth planning around.
- Check the date-specific schedule. Your ship’s port hours, landing method, traffic, weather, and the day’s passenger load all affect the experience. The port information does not provide a universal safe return buffer, so use your cruise line’s instructions and leave time for delays.
Will either port be quiet?
Neither destination can be treated as reliably crowd-free. Dubrovnik’s Port Authority describes passenger-management measures, including joint booking arrangements for ships at the port and in front of the Old City. Those measures do not predict how busy a particular date or call will be; consult your itinerary and the port-day schedule. Port of Dubrovnik
