Did Dubai test an autonomous flying taxi? The official accounts cited here do not say that it did. Dubai announced a Joby Aviation aerial-taxi test flight in June 2025; a subsequent milestone was explicitly described as a crewed, piloted flight. Dubai’s passenger service remains a plan, not a service these announcements show as operating.
What Dubai’s announcements say happened
June 30, 2025: Joby test flight announced
Dubai Media Office reported that Joby Aviation’s aerial taxi had completed what it called the region’s first successful test flight. The announcement looked ahead to station operations and an inaugural commercial flight in 2026; it was a plan announced at the time, not confirmation that commercial flights began. Dubai Media Office’s June 2025 announcement attributed a statement to Joby founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt, who called Dubai “a launchpad for a global revolution in mobility.” That is the company chief executive’s view, not evidence of an operating passenger service.

November 16, 2025: a crewed point-to-point flight
RTA and Joby later announced the first crewed eVTOL aerial-taxi flight between two distinct UAE locations: Margham and Al Maktoum International Airport. Their announcement anticipated more testing and passenger operations in 2026. The November announcement names RTA, Joby, DANS and other partners in the testing effort.

Later RTA update: 17-minute piloted journey
A subsequent RTA project update describes the November flight as a 17-minute, piloted point-to-point journey from Joby’s Margham test facility to Al Maktoum International Airport. It also reports progress on a planned initial network of four stations.

Why “autonomous” is not supported
“Autonomous” implies that the aircraft flew without a pilot operating it. The official descriptions of the Dubai milestones instead call the later route flight crewed or piloted. The June announcement calls its event a test flight but does not establish that it was autonomous. On these accounts, the accurate description is a Joby aerial-taxi test program that included a piloted point-to-point flight—not a demonstrated autonomous Dubai flight.
When might Dubai’s passenger service start?
The latest cited RTA update says preparations were underway for an official launch by the end of 2026. That is a target, not proof of current availability or a guaranteed start date. Earlier announcements used different 2026 milestones: the June 2025 statement looked ahead to an inaugural commercial flight, and RTA’s 2024 project announcement targeted Q1 2026. The later end-of-2026 target is the most recent of these cited plans. RTA is the Dubai transport authority; Joby is the aircraft developer and named service partner. Dubai’s announced framework also names the GCAA, DCAA and Skyports Infrastructure.

RTA’s 2024 description also says the aircraft has six rotors and four battery packs. Those design details and the performance figures do not, by themselves, establish safety outcomes, emissions reductions, fares, affordability or customer demand. The cited official accounts do not provide independent published statistics on those outcomes.
