Neither setup is automatically better. Choose two monitors if you want applications on separate physical screens, flexible placement, or portrait orientation; choose one ultrawide if you prefer a continuous, panoramic workspace without a center bezel. Your desk, computer’s display support, software, and the exact models’ specifications and total cost should decide the purchase.
How the two setups differ
The main difference is not simply how much screen area you get. Two monitors create two independent physical displays, while an ultrawide combines a broad viewing area into one panel. That affects how windows are arranged, how content spans the screens, and how the setup fits your desk.

| Decision | One ultrawide | Two monitors |
|---|---|---|
| Window layout | Arrange multiple windows across one wide surface, using your operating system’s snapping features or monitor software. | Keep an application or reference on its own physical screen; move each display independently. |
| Visual continuity | No center bezel interrupts content spanning the panel. | A bezel gap separates the displays and interrupts content stretched across both. |
| Placement | One display and usually one stand, but the panel may be wide. | Side-by-side, stacked, portrait, or mixed-size arrangements are possible, subject to the desk and mounts. |
| Connections | Commonly one display connection. | Commonly two display connections, plus power for each screen. |
| Compatibility | Check the specific panel’s aspect ratio, resolution, application support, and computer capability. | Check each display’s resolution and confirm the computer can drive both at the intended settings. |
| Cost | Compare the price of the actual ultrawide with the full cost of the alternative setup. | Include both monitors and any mount, cables, or adapters needed; neither layout is always cheaper. |
When two monitors are the better fit
You want clear separation between tasks
Two physical screens make it straightforward to leave one application open on one display and a document, browser, or reference on the other. You can still arrange windows on an ultrawide, but doing so depends on snapping features or other software rather than a physical division.
You need different orientations or positions
Separate displays can be arranged side-by-side, stacked, or with one screen in portrait orientation, if the stands or mounts allow it. This flexibility can suit workflows that benefit from a tall page or a dedicated secondary screen.
#1 Best Overall
- DO MORE ON ONE SCREEN: See every detail on the wider display featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio; Ultra WQHD provides the simplest way to maximize screen real estate and experience truly seamless multitasking on just one screen.Brightness (Typical) : 300 cd/㎡. Static Contrast Ratio 3000:1.
- ENJOY A BILLION COLORS W/ INCREDIBLE DEPTH: With HDR10 that displays over 1 billion colors compared to 16.7 million for typical SDR technology, dark colors are darker and the brightest are even brighter; Content is experienced as the creator intended
- CARE FOR YOUR EYES DAY and NIGHT: An ambient light sensor on the monitor detects lighting in your workstation and automatically adjusts brightness; Eye Saver Mode minimizes excessive blue light, and Flicker Free relieves eye strain
- SEE CONTENT SMOOTHER, EVEN GAMING: A faster than average refresh rate updates the image on screen more often every second; 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur when playing games, watching videos, or working on design projects
- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
Your desk can accommodate the layout
Two displays generally need more desk width and stand space. A compatible VESA dual-monitor arm can reduce the footprint taken by the stands and allow more positioning options. Before buying one, confirm that each monitor has a compatible VESA mount and that the arm supports each screen’s size and weight. MSI’s comparison of ultrawide and dual-monitor setups discusses placement and mounting considerations.
When one ultrawide is the better fit
You value an uninterrupted wide image
A single ultrawide has no physical center bezel, so content can span the full panel without a gap. That can make a wide workspace feel continuous, although whether a particular application benefits depends on its layout and support for the screen’s aspect ratio.

You want a simpler display connection
An ultrawide commonly uses one display connection, whereas a dual setup commonly needs two display connections and power for both monitors. Check the computer’s available outputs and the monitor’s inputs rather than assuming every port, cable, or adapter supports the resolution and refresh rate you want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYour desk suits one wide panel better
One monitor means one display and one stand, but that does not make every ultrawide a compact choice: the panel itself can take substantial horizontal space. Measure the usable desk width and depth, including room for the stand, before deciding.

What the size and resolution examples tell you
LG UK’s comparison uses a 34-inch ultrawide at 21:9 and 3440 × 1440 as one example, and a pair of 27-inch 16:9 monitors at 2560 × 1440 each as another. These are representative configurations, not specifications that apply to every ultrawide or dual-monitor setup. LG estimates that the two 27-inch examples together add about 23.5 inches of width—around 15.5 inches more than its 34-inch ultrawide example. Treat those measurements as specific to that comparison, not as a universal measurement for these categories. See LG UK’s ultrawide-versus-dual-monitors comparison.
Screen size alone does not tell you how much workspace or detail you will get. Compare each model’s resolution, aspect ratio, pixel density, and physical dimensions. Also check that your applications render well at the intended resolution and that your computer supports the displays you plan to connect.

Does either setup improve productivity?
A 2021 survey study by Guy Amir, Ayala Prusak, Tal Reiss, Nir Zabari, and Dror G. Feitelson surveyed 101 practitioners; 80% said they had coded professionally for at least two years. In that sample, 19% reported adding a monitor to their home setup in response to the COVID-19 situation. The authors wrote that “The results indicate that using multiple monitors is indeed perceived as beneficial and desirable.” That describes respondents’ perceptions and work practices; the survey does not establish that either hardware layout causes a productivity gain for every person. The study is available on arXiv.
How to choose for your setup
- Map your workflow. If keeping apps physically separate or using different screen orientations matters most, start by comparing dual monitors. If a continuous wide workspace matters most, compare ultrawides and check your apps’ support for their aspect ratio.
- Measure the desk. Check available width and depth with the intended stand or mount in place. Account for the combined width of two monitors or the full width of one ultrawide.
- Check the computer and connections. Confirm that the computer supports the number of displays, resolution, and refresh rate you intend to use. Verify available outputs, monitor inputs, and any adapter requirements.
- Compare exact models. Check dimensions, resolution, pixel density, panel specifications, ports, stand adjustment, warranty, and VESA compatibility. For two monitors, check whether you want matching displays or a mixed-size arrangement.
- Calculate the full cost. Compare the ultrawide against both monitors plus any arm, cables, or adapters. Prices and availability vary by model and seller; do not assume one arrangement is cheaper.
LG’s multi-monitor setup guide also advises checking product specifications and compatibility. Use the details for the specific models and computer you plan to pair, rather than relying on category labels alone.
