Dual-booting Windows 11 and Ubuntu means choosing one operating system when the laptop starts; it does not put both desktops on screen at once. The day-to-day experience therefore depends on which system you boot, while the setup experience depends on your laptop’s storage configuration, encryption, and hardware support.
There is no reliable universal verdict that Ubuntu will feel faster, last longer on battery, or work better with a particular laptop. Without hands-on results for a named model, the most useful comparison is the workflow: preview Ubuntu first, check compatibility, then decide whether the disk and security trade-offs suit you.

What dual-booting feels like in practice
Think of the laptop as having two separate workspaces and a choice at startup. You enter Windows 11 for the applications and workflow you use there, or Ubuntu for the session you want in Ubuntu. Switching systems means restarting and selecting the other operating system, rather than moving between two desktops in the same session.
That makes the main experiential difference less about an abstract “Windows versus Ubuntu” winner and more about how well each environment fits your tasks. The laptop model, drivers, peripherals, and required applications all matter. No model-specific test results are available here for battery life, speed, sleep and wake, Wi-Fi, graphics, gaming, or external displays, so those cannot be stated as universal differences.

Preview Ubuntu before changing the laptop
Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop installation guide offers a “Try Ubuntu” option. It starts a live session that previews the desktop without changing the computer and can be used to check whether hardware works correctly. For someone wondering, “I am tired of Windows 11, what should I be careful and watch out for?”, this is a practical first step: test the laptop before committing disk space to an installation.
Use the preview to check the components and tasks that matter on your own machine, such as connecting to Wi-Fi, using the trackpad and keyboard, adjusting brightness, attaching a monitor, and waking the laptop after sleep. A live session is a useful indication, not proof that every installed driver, power behavior, or application will work exactly as expected after installation.
What setup adds to the experience
Prepare installation media and a backup
Ubuntu’s official guide calls for bootable USB installation media. Writing the Ubuntu image erases the USB stick, so use one whose contents you can lose. Canonical says writing the image with Rufus “usually takes around 10 minutes”; that is an estimate for preparing the USB, not the full installation. Back up important files before making disk changes.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Choose an alongside installation and disk space
The installer supports installing Ubuntu alongside Windows and lets you choose the drive and the amount of space for Ubuntu. The available space depends on how much of the disk is already occupied by files. That decision shapes the practical split between the two systems: reserve enough room for Ubuntu and its files without treating the Windows installation or personal data as disposable.
Canonical describes manual partitioning as intended for advanced users who want a specific configuration. If you do not already know why you need custom partitions, the guided alongside option is the more relevant path to investigate.
Check for Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Some PCs use Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), which Ubuntu’s installation guide says it does not support unless RST is disabled. If the installer cannot proceed because of a storage configuration, identify the exact laptop and Windows setup before changing storage settings; do not assume every machine has this issue or apply a generic fix.

BitLocker is a decision point, not a routine tweak
Canonical says the installer cannot safely map Windows storage for an alongside installation when that storage is encrypted with BitLocker. Its documentation describes disabling BitLocker or using a separate unencrypted disk as possible routes, but also warns that some Windows versions may not let users re-enable BitLocker after it has been turned off.

Disabling disk protection casually can create a security and recovery problem; if the implications are unclear, pause rather than proceeding just to get the installer past a warning. Canonical’s references are Install Ubuntu Desktop and BitLocker during Ubuntu installation.
Secure Boot usually does not mean turning it off
Secure Boot is part of Windows 11’s protected startup process. Ubuntu documents a compatible signed boot path: firmware checks a Microsoft-signed shim, which validates Canonical-signed GRUB and kernel components. For typical Ubuntu use, that means Secure Boot alone is not a reason to assume Ubuntu cannot start or that you must disable the protection.

There is an exception to the “invisible setup” expectation: some third-party kernel modules may need signing and Machine Owner Key (MOK) enrollment, which can add a confirmation step during reboot. Canonical describes automatic key handling for typical Ubuntu use, but a particular driver or module can change the experience. See Ubuntu’s Secure Boot documentation and Microsoft’s explanation of Secure Boot and Trusted Boot.
Microsoft also documents Secure Boot certificate updates for Windows devices. That page does not establish which certificates are currently deployed on a particular laptop, so treat firmware trust configuration as device-specific maintenance rather than a universal action every dual-boot user must take. Details are at Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to verify on your own laptop
The live preview and setup checks answer only part of the question. Before relying on Ubuntu for regular work, verify the workflows you need in the installed system and keep the Windows session available for anything that depends on it.

Who is likely to find dual-booting worthwhile?
Dual-booting is a reasonable fit if you want to explore Ubuntu while retaining a separate Windows environment, and you are comfortable choosing an OS at startup and managing disk space. It is less attractive if you need to switch between Windows-only and Ubuntu-only applications constantly without restarting, or if encryption and storage settings make installation changes unacceptable.
The most dependable way to judge the feel is to test the Ubuntu live session, resolve any storage or encryption questions before installation, and then evaluate the installed system against your own daily tasks. That yields a laptop-specific answer instead of a promise about performance or battery life that the evidence cannot support.
