Dryer tests reveal how evenly clothes dry and how much energy they use

How do you test clothes dryers? A thorough evaluation checks whether different loads dry evenly, how long cycles take, whether settings overdry or leave clothes damp, and how the dryer performs for energy use, noise and everyday handling. Consumer-lab ratings and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) energy tests answer related but different questions: one can assess a broader set of consumer outcomes, while the other applies a standardized procedure to measure energy consumption.

What does a dryer test measure?

A consumer test can look beyond whether a single load comes out dry. The useful comparison points are drying completeness and evenness, cycle time, overdrying or fabric-care risk, energy use, noise and usability. Reliability can also matter when a testing organization has suitable evidence to assess it. The categories and their weighting vary by publisher; no single consumer-lab protocol should be treated as a universal industry standard.

Consumer Reports says its dryer ratings draw on performance, reliability, noise and convenience. Its published approach is one example of consumer testing, not a description of every lab’s method. Consumer Reports explains its dryer-testing method.

How do consumer labs check drying performance?

Consumer Reports says it tests loads of different sizes and fabric mixes, including cotton/polyester blends and synthetic delicates. Its performance checks track drying time and whether items are damp, dry or overdried at minimum and maximum dryness settings. Testing lead Larry Ciufo, who oversees the organization’s dryer testing, said: “We test dryness based on three different cycles—delicate, permanent press, and a mixed cotton load.”

Using several fabric types and cycles helps reveal whether a dryer’s results are consistent across more than one kind of laundry. Testing at both ends of a dryness setting range can also expose a trade-off: a cycle that reliably finishes a load may run longer than necessary or leave fabrics exposed to more heat than needed. Those observations describe what the lab checks; they do not establish that every household load will behave identically.

Consumer Reports also describes measuring drying time on an appropriate setting, checking minimum and maximum dryness results, and assessing whether garments come out damp or completely dry without exposure to high temperatures. Its convenience assessment includes controls and ergonomics, loading and unloading, door clearance above a typical laundry basket, and access to and cleaning of the lint filter. A panel judges the quality and level of noise during an average load.

In its October 7, 2026 coverage, Consumer Reports referred to nearly 140 rated clothes dryers. That figure is the scope of that coverage, not a sample size for an individual test or a general count of dryers on the market. The organization’s 2026 dryer coverage describes its ratings in that context.

How do labs test dryer energy use?

In the United States, DOE’s federal procedure establishes controlled conditions for residential dryer energy testing. The current rule is in 10 CFR Part 430, Subpart B, including Appendices D1 and D2. The applicable appendix depends on the relevant energy standard or representation; the rule specifies that manufacturers use a single appendix for all representations within the stated context. Both appendices distinguish vented dryers, which exhaust evaporated moisture, from ventless dryers, which use an internal closed-loop condenser.

For the drying test, DOE specifies an ambient temperature of 75 ±3 °F and relative humidity of 50% ±10%. The bone-dry test load weighs 8.45 pounds ±0.085 pounds for a standard dryer or 3.00 pounds ±0.03 pounds for a compact dryer. The load is prepared to a defined moisture level, loaded using a specified method and dried at prescribed settings; energy use and moisture are recorded for the required calculations. These are controlled laboratory conditions, not a promise that a household cycle will take the same time or use the same energy. The current eCFR procedure for residential appliances also addresses installation, preconditioning, cycle operation, drum capacity, standby and off-mode power, and per-cycle or annual energy calculations. Where DOE’s rule conflicts with incorporated industry-standard text, the rule takes precedence.

DOE’s method is an energy-consumption procedure, not a comprehensive score for real-world drying quality, noise or ease of use. It standardizes an important comparison but does not replace broader consumer testing.

What does an efficiency rating tell you?

ENERGY STAR describes Combined Energy Factor (CEF) as a ratio based on the test load and energy used during standby and operating cycles. A higher standardized efficiency metric supports comparison under the specified method. It does not mean every household will use energy at the same rate: ENERGY STAR cautions that actual use varies with patterns of use, cycle selection and load size.

That distinction matters when interpreting results. A standardized energy figure helps compare dryers on a common basis; the electricity or gas used at home also depends on how a household operates the appliance and on installation. ENERGY STAR’s clothes-dryer information explains its consumer guidance.

How do tests compare drying time and energy?

Drying time and energy use are related but are not interchangeable measures. A performance test can record how long a cycle takes and whether the load is damp, dry or overdried. The DOE procedure records energy and moisture under defined conditions to calculate standardized energy metrics. A lab may therefore assess cycle results and time while federal testing supplies a consistent energy-consumption comparison; neither result alone describes every part of ownership.

  • Drying outcome: Were items damp, suitably dry or overdried, and were results consistent across tested fabrics and settings?
  • Time: How long did the selected cycle take under the lab’s stated test?
  • Energy: What standardized consumption result did the federal method produce under its specified load and conditions?
  • Usability and noise: Were controls, loading, lint-filter access and operating sound assessed by the consumer-testing organization?

Why might a dryer leave clothes damp?

A damp result is a performance outcome a lab can detect, not a diagnosis of a particular household appliance. Consumer Reports says it checks dryness at minimum and maximum settings and uses different load sizes and fabric mixes, so a comparison can show whether performance changes across those tested conditions. The published test descriptions do not establish a universal cause for damp laundry in a home. A DOE energy result is not a substitute for a damp-load diagnosis: its purpose is standardized energy measurement, not identifying why a specific cycle failed to dry.

Where does dryer safety fit?

Safety should be treated separately from a drying-performance or energy score. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission describes work with UL to revise the voluntary clothes-dryer standard to strengthen provisions addressing dryer fire hazards. That is a safety-standards topic, not a result that can be inferred from a lab’s drying-time or energy test. See the CPSC clothes-dryer voluntary-standards page for that context.
