That mismatch can cause scratchiness, burning, redness, light sensitivity and intermittent blurred vision.
Symptoms that persist, worsen, interfere with daily activities, or include substantial pain, redness or vision changes deserve an eye-care assessment. Treatment is not one-size-fits-all; an examination can identify whether low tear production, evaporation, eyelid disease, medicines or another condition is driving the problem.

What dry eye actually means
The National Eye Institute (NEI) defines dry eye this way: “Dry eye happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears to stay wet, or when your tears don’t work correctly.” Tears are more than water. They form a thin film containing oil, water and mucus-like components that spread over the cornea with every blink, smooth the optical surface and help protect it.

Nearly 16.4 million Americans have dry eye, according to an NEI patient page updated August 6, 2025. The page does not identify the study year behind that estimate, so the figure should be read as a current NEI-reported count rather than a precisely dated prevalence survey.

There are three overlapping ways the tear film can fail:
- Insufficient production: the lacrimal glands do not supply enough aqueous tears.
- Excess evaporation: tears disappear too quickly, often when the oily layer is inadequate.
- Tear dysfunction: the tears are present but do not spread, remain stable or protect the surface effectively.
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), in which the oil-producing glands in the eyelids do not release a healthy oil layer, is a major cause of evaporative dry eye. A person can have more than one mechanism at the same time.
How it can feel and what to notice
Dry eye symptoms vary from day to day and may affect one or both eyes. Common sensations and visual changes include:

Some people notice symptoms most during reading, driving, contact-lens wear or computer work. Others have signs of surface irritation with surprisingly little discomfort. Conversely, discomfort does not prove that dry eye is the cause; allergy, infection, eyelid inflammation and other eye conditions can feel similar.
NEI specifically notes that dry eye can happen if you spend a lot of time looking at a computer, tablet or smartphone. Screen use usually contributes by reducing blink frequency and producing incomplete blinks, not because the screen permanently “uses up” tears.

Who is more likely to develop it
Risk rises with age, particularly from about 50 onward, and is higher in women. Contact-lens wear can make the surface less tolerant of tear-film disruption. Certain autoimmune diseases can affect tear-producing glands or the ocular surface. Medicines and environmental conditions also matter.
Medicines and health conditions
Tell the clinician who evaluates your eyes about every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement you use. A medicine may contribute to dryness, but stopping it without advice can create a different health risk. Autoimmune disease, eyelid disorders and prior eye procedures can change which treatment is appropriate.
Environment and behavior
Smoke, wind, dry indoor air and air-conditioning can increase evaporation or irritation. Long, uninterrupted screen sessions and contact lenses can expose an already unstable tear film. These factors do not establish a diagnosis, but their timing can help your clinician understand the pattern.
When an eye doctor should examine you
Arrange an appointment when symptoms continue despite reasonable self-care, are getting worse, interfere with work or routine activities, or are not relieved by lubricating drops. Significant redness, pain or a change in vision should prompt professional attention rather than repeated product trials. Severe, untreated dry eye can damage the cornea.
Bring a list of medicines, contact-lens information and a brief description of when symptoms occur. Note whether blur improves after blinking, whether mornings or evenings are worse, and whether smoke, fans, heating or screen work trigger symptoms. Those details can help distinguish evaporation, inflammation, exposure and other causes.

How dry eye is evaluated
An eye-care professional examines the eye surface and eyelids, then assesses how much tear fluid is produced and how long the tear film remains intact. The tests are complementary; no single measurement explains every case.
Slit-lamp examination
A slit lamp is a microscope with a focused light beam. It lets the clinician inspect the eyelid margins, eyelashes, conjunctiva, cornea and the visible tear film at high magnification. The examination can reveal surface damage, inflammation, blocked oil glands or another condition that resembles dry eye.
Schirmer’s test
For Schirmer’s testing, a narrow paper strip is placed at the edge of the lower eyelid. The amount of wetting over a measured period estimates tear production. The strip can feel irritating and may itself stimulate reflex tearing, so the result is interpreted with the examination and symptoms rather than in isolation.
Tear break-up time
Tear break-up time measures how long the tear film stays continuous after a blink. The clinician observes when dry spots appear. A short interval indicates instability, which can occur even when total tear volume is not markedly low.
The clinician may also assess blinking, eyelid closure and the meibomian glands. Those observations are important when evaporation or MGD is suspected.

Relief for mild symptoms: choosing a lubricant thoughtfully
Artificial tears are the most common treatment for mild dry eye. They replace or supplement the tear film, but they do not correct every underlying cause. Follow the product directions and ask a pharmacist or eye doctor if you are unsure which formulation fits your use.
| Form | Practical role | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid drops | Convenient for daytime use and intermittent symptoms | Shorter-lasting products may require repeated doses |
| Gel drops | Thicker lubrication for symptoms that outlast ordinary drops | Can blur vision temporarily, so many people reserve them for less visually demanding times |
| Ointment | Long-lasting coating, often useful at bedtime | Greasy and commonly blurs vision; not convenient for daytime tasks |
Preservative-free tears may be suitable when drops are needed frequently or when preservatives cause sensitivity. A preservative-free label does not make every product appropriate for every eye, and more frequent use should trigger a discussion about why symptoms persist.
Do not share bottles, touch the applicator tip to the eye, or continue using a product that causes marked irritation. Lubricants can ease symptoms while an appointment is pending, but persistent symptoms should not be managed indefinitely by escalating drop frequency on your own.
Everyday measures that reduce tear-film stress
- Take screen breaks: every so often, look away and blink slowly and fully several times. Shorter sessions with deliberate blinking are more useful than simply staring at a distant screen while keeping the eyes wide open.
- Limit direct airflow: redirect fans, car vents and air-conditioners away from your face.
- Reduce smoke exposure: smoke irritates the ocular surface and can worsen evaporation.
- Use a humidifier when indoor air is dry: clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid introducing contaminants.
- Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors: they reduce exposure to wind and help shield the surface from airborne irritants.
- Review contact-lens wear: shorten wear time or switch to glasses temporarily if lenses consistently provoke symptoms, and ask the prescribing clinician before changing the lens or solution.
Warm compresses and gentle eyelid care are often included in MGD treatment plans, but heat and massage should be demonstrated or approved by a clinician when the eyelids are inflamed or painful.

| Option | What it targets | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Prescription cyclosporine (Restasis) or lifitegrast (Xiidra) | Ocular-surface inflammation and chronic tear-film dysfunction | Regular prescription dosing; benefit is not an instant replacement for tears and should be monitored by the prescriber |
| Loteprednol etabonate | Inflammatory flares | A prescription corticosteroid used under clinical supervision because steroid eye drops require monitoring |
| Intranasal varenicline | Stimulating the neural pathway that promotes natural tear secretion | Nasal administration; suitability and side effects require a clinician’s review |
| Punctal plugs | Reducing drainage of tears from the eye | A clinician places small plugs in tear-drain openings; they help some people with inadequate retention but are not appropriate for every inflammatory or drainage problem |
| Warm compresses, physical heating and gland expression | Blocked or poorly functioning meibomian glands | Procedures or home care aimed at improving the oily tear layer; repeated sessions may be needed |
| Intense pulsed light | Selected MGD-related eyelid and gland problems | Office-based treatment for carefully selected patients; evidence and availability vary by practice |
| Eyelid surgery | Structural problems that prevent proper closure or alter tear distribution | Uncommon and reserved for specific anatomical causes |
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s review of dry-eye therapies also discusses perfluorohexyloctane. Two pivotal phase 3 studies reported statistically significant improvements in a clinical sign and a dryness symptom compared with saline. Those trial results describe group averages, not a guarantee for an individual, and blurred vision was a labeled risk. Discuss any prescription or newly marketed therapy with the clinician who can evaluate your eyes and review the official labeling.
Current treatments can control symptoms and improve the tear film, but the FDA review states that available therapies do not provide a permanent cure. Recurrence does not mean treatment “failed”; it may indicate that the underlying trigger or mechanism still needs attention.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
Assuming every red eye is dry eye
Redness with discharge, marked pain, light sensitivity or vision change can have causes that need different treatment. Avoid borrowing someone else’s prescription drops or using leftover medication.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Using redness-relief drops as a substitute for lubrication
Products designed primarily to make blood vessels look smaller do not address tear-film deficiency and can create a cycle of rebound redness with frequent use. Choose a lubricant only when the label and a clinician or pharmacist support that use.
Ignoring contact-lens warning signs
Take lenses out when the eye becomes painful, markedly red or suddenly blurry and contact the prescribing eye professional. Continuing wear can aggravate a surface problem and complicate evaluation.
Stopping a prescribed treatment too soon
Some anti-inflammatory therapies are intended for regular use and may take time to show their full effect. Follow the prescribed schedule and report side effects instead of changing the dose independently.
Questions to take to your appointment
- Does my examination suggest low tear production, rapid evaporation, MGD, inflammation or more than one cause?
- Could any of my medicines, contact-lens habits or workplace conditions be contributing?
- How often should I use a preservative-free lubricant, and when should I stop self-treating?
- Would a gel, ointment, prescription anti-inflammatory, gland treatment or punctal plug address the finding you see?
- Which symptoms mean I should call sooner rather than wait for a routine follow-up?
A second look matters because “dry eye” describes a group of tear-film problems, not a single defect. Matching the evaluation and treatment to the mechanism offers a safer path than cycling through increasingly thick drops without finding out why the surface is failing.
