Alert overload is not just a matter of receiving too many notifications. It is a signal-quality problem: repeated, low-value alerts compete for limited human attention, making a genuinely urgent event easier to miss. The practical fix is to make alerts actionable, group events that belong to one incident, and judge prioritization by whether it preserves important signals—not only whether it reduces the count.
Why alert volume alone is a poor measure
An alert is useful when it tells the right person that something needs attention, at the right time, with enough context to act. A large stream of informational or duplicate notifications creates triage work without necessarily improving detection or response.

The problem appears in two different settings that should not be conflated. Production reliability teams use pages to summon on-call engineers when services need intervention. Security operations centers (SOCs) triage detections that may represent attacks, attempted attacks, or benign activity. Their counts describe different workflows and cannot be compared as if they were the same kind of alert.

Production reliability and on-call pages
Google’s SRE guidance says, “All paging alerts should also be actionable.” It recommends aligning pages with symptoms that threaten service-level objectives (SLOs), rather than paging on every condition that might be interesting. Frequent low-priority pages interrupt work and may make serious pages easier to overlook. Google SRE, “Being On-Call”

Security operations and detection alerts
A security alert is an item for investigation, not automatically a confirmed incident or a page requiring immediate intervention. In a study of one real SOC, Limin Yang and colleagues analyzed 115 million network alerts collected from 2018 through 2022. The organization handled between 24,000 and 134,000 network alerts per day. In the authors’ analysis, 0.01% of alerts were associated with true attacks, 27% related to attack attempts, and 49% to benign triggers. These are findings from one organization and dataset, not industry-wide rates. Yang et al., USENIX Security 2024
How to diagnose the noise
Measure the workload and its consequences together. A declining notification count is not a success if important incidents are being missed, while a high count may be manageable if alerts are distinct, actionable, and routed to people who can respond.
- Actionability: For each page or high-priority detection, ask whether it calls for a human action now, and whether the recipient has enough information and authority to take it.
- Pages per incident: Count how many pages or notifications arrive for a single underlying production incident.
- Duplicate and fan-out rate: Identify repeated events and alerts sent to multiple recipients or channels without adding useful information.
- Alert disposition: Where labels are dependable, track actionable, informational, false-positive, and benign-trigger outcomes. Do not treat these categories as interchangeable.
- Triage time and on-call load: Measure time spent investigating alerts and the disruption experienced by responders.
- Missed high-impact incidents: Review incidents that were not detected or escalated promptly, as well as whether alert changes contributed.
Google SRE offers examples for teams to adapt, not universal quotas: a team might make paging events per shift a measurable symptom, with an example target of fewer than two, and tune noisy alerts toward one alert per incident. The appropriate measure depends on the service and team. Google SRE, “Being On-Call”

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Reduce noise without hiding important events
Make pages symptom-driven and actionable
Start with what users or service objectives experience, then connect the page to a response someone can take. A signal that reports an internal condition without a clear action may belong on a dashboard or in a lower-priority queue rather than waking an on-call engineer. Keep pages for conditions that warrant timely human intervention.
Group related alerts around the incident
Correlate events that point to the same underlying issue so the responder can investigate one incident rather than repeatedly triaging its symptoms. Google SRE advises that noisy alerts generating more than one alert per incident should be adjusted to approach a 1:1 alert-to-incident ratio. This is an operational tuning goal, not a guarantee that every incident produces exactly one notification. Google SRE, “Being On-Call”
Prioritize with context, not severity labels alone
Severity can be a useful input, but a label by itself may not reflect the affected asset, service importance, incident context, or likely business impact. A September 2026 preprint by Uetz, Bönninghausen, Hackländer-Jansen, and Henze evaluated risk-based prioritization across eight datasets. It reported a mean AUROC of 0.92 (standard deviation 0.09) for selected combinations of risk hypotheses, compared with 0.72 (standard deviation 0.21) for straightforward severity ranking. AUROC summarizes how well a ranking distinguishes positive from negative cases across thresholds; these results are a preliminary research evaluation, not a promised result from a deployed product. Review the outcome after tuning
Reduce duplicate fan-out and low-value notifications in stages, then examine real incidents and alert dispositions to check whether meaningful signals remain detectable and reach the right responders. Track both reduced triage burden and missed or delayed high-impact events; optimizing only for fewer alerts can conceal a detection problem.
Keep SOC statistics in context
Survey figures can illustrate how respondents describe their workload, but they are not equivalent to measurements of every security team. Orca Security’s 2022 survey of more than 800 IT professionals across five countries and ten industries reported that 59% received more than 500 public-cloud security alerts per day, and 55% said their teams had missed critical alerts because of ineffective prioritization. These are vendor-published survey findings from 2022, not independently established rates for the security workforce as a whole. Orca Security, “2022 Cloud Security Alert Fatigue Report”
Orca CEO and co-founder Avi Shua said disconnected tools contribute to the burden and that sifting through large volumes of high-priority alerts can overwhelm practitioners. Those remarks describe the vendor’s view; they are not independent evidence that a specific product or consolidation strategy solves alert fatigue. Consolidating tools may change where alerts appear, but it does not by itself establish that alerts are actionable, correctly grouped, or safely prioritized.

Use incident response as an organizational practice
NIST Special Publication 800-61 Revision 3, published April 3, 2025, integrates incident-response recommendations with cybersecurity risk management under the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 and supersedes Revision 2. It is useful context for planning responsibilities and response readiness, but it does not set an ideal alert count or study alert fatigue. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3
For either a reliability team or a SOC, assign ownership for alert changes, document routing and escalation expectations, and include alert quality in incident reviews. The precise workflow differs: SRE teams should focus on service symptoms, SLO impact, and on-call disruption; SOC teams should assess detection evidence, investigation context, and escalation risk.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Google SRE provides operational guidance on actionable pages, grouping, and reducing repeated alerts, not a universal alert quota.
- The USENIX Security 2024 measurements describe one SOC’s network alerts over 2018–2022, not all security operations.
- The risk-based prioritization results are from a September 2026 preprint and do not establish product performance in every environment.
- Orca’s figures are vendor-published survey findings from 2022, not independently representative workforce statistics.
- These sources do not establish one best tool or prove that a particular alert threshold will prevent missed incidents.
