Ancient coastal forests that were drowned by rising seas have become hard seabed, nursery habitat and biodiversity hotspots in Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago. A Scientific Reports study published on 12 October 2026 describes these formations as submerged tropical peat reefs: terrestrial peat deposits now colonized by marine life.
They are not coral reefs. Their ecological value comes from the physical structure of exposed peat—cracks, ledges and uneven platforms—in a coastline otherwise dominated by shifting sand. Radiocarbon dates from sampled peat range from about 300 to 5,000 years BP (before present), linking the oldest material to mid-Holocene coastal change.

How a forest floor became a marine reef
Peat forms when waterlogged vegetation accumulates faster than it decomposes. In the Bazaruto region, coastal forests and peat swamps built layers of plant material on land. As sea level rose during the Holocene, seawater covered those landscapes. Later, tides, waves and erosion removed surrounding sediment and exposed sections of the buried peat as solid seabed.

Once exposed in shallow water, the peat acted as a platform. Seagrass and seaweeds could attach to it, while oysters, barnacles, sponges and other organisms occupied its surface. Crevices and overhangs provided shelter for juvenile fish and invertebrates. The result is a modern marine habitat made from an ancient terrestrial substrate.

What the dating shows
Radiocarbon measurements place sampled deposits at roughly 300–5,000 years BP. The age range does not mean every reef is 5,000 years old; it records the material analyzed at different sites. Carbon-isotope values around δ13C −27‰ are consistent with predominantly terrestrial plant matter rather than material produced by marine algae or corals.
Are Mozambique’s peat reefs coral reefs?
No living reef-building corals were documented on the peat formations. “Reef” describes their role as a persistent, three-dimensional hard habitat, not their geological origin. Coral reefs are built from calcium-carbonate skeletons produced by coral colonies. Bazaruto’s peat reefs are compressed and exposed plant deposits that marine organisms now use as attachment and refuge surfaces.

How much life do the peat reefs support?
Surveys found 26–36 small fish species on individual peat reefs. That mix was comparable in diversity to nearby coral-reef sites, although comparable species counts do not make the habitats interchangeable. BCSS reports 41 small-fish and megafauna species shared between peat and coral habitats, indicating movement between them.
Residents and visitors
- Juvenile snappers and grunts use cracks and ledges as shelter.
- Seagrass and seaweeds grow directly on exposed peat.
- Sponges, oysters and barnacles attach to the surface.
- Spiny lobsters occupy crevices.
- Sharks, rays and turtles were recorded in the broader surveys around the archipelago.
The important comparison is functional: peat reefs can provide nursery, refuge and feeding space in a region with little natural hard seabed. Their attached-invertebrate assemblage differs strongly from that of coral reefs, so they add habitat rather than replace coral ecosystems.

What the findings say—and do not say—about blue carbon
Samples contained up to 40% organic carbon by dry weight, according to the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS). That is a composition measurement from sampled peat, not a habitat-scale estimate of how much carbon the entire reef system stores.
The study does not establish total carbon stock, burial or sequestration rates, permanence, or the peat system’s net greenhouse-gas balance. Determining those values requires measurements of peat thickness, bulk density, mapped area, burial and erosion rates, and greenhouse-gas fluxes. “Blue carbon” is therefore a plausible research direction, not a settled climate claim.

Why the habitat is productive but physically vulnerable
The reefs lie in very shallow water, around 2–4 metres deep, and tides regularly expose them. Observed daily temperatures span approximately 24.5–28.6°C. Storms and cyclones can bury peat under sand, uncover it, fracture it or remove sections. Shifting sediment can make an individual formation disappear even while other exposed layers become available nearby.
This instability helps explain the habitat’s patchwork character: hard surfaces appear amid sand, are rapidly colonized, and may later be covered or eroded. Conservation plans need to protect the wider seascape and its connectivity, not assume that every mapped peat outcrop is permanent.

What was actually measured in the Bazaruto program?
BCSS describes its observatory, established in 2017, as a long-term, multi-ecosystem monitoring program covering coral reefs, seagrass, mangroves, peat, lagoons, seamounts and open ocean. It reports more than 22 million measurements across over 30 variables from 14 monitoring stations and an area of approximately 6,850 km². Those figures describe the observatory’s monitoring effort, not the size of the peat reefs.
The institutional release issued on 13 October 2026 quotes lead author and BCSS Ocean Observatory chief scientist Dr Mario Lebrato: “What was once a forest floor is now a nursery for reef fish. We were surprised by how much life these ancient peat deposits support, and how many species move between them and the coral reefs nearby. This coastline has very little natural hard seabed, mostly shifting sand. When rising seas expose these old peat layers, they create rare, solid habitat where marine life can settle, hide and feed.”
Could underwater peat reefs exist elsewhere?
Possibly. Any coast where forests or peat swamps were submerged and later exposed by erosion could contain comparable hard organic deposits. But the Bazaruto observations do not establish a worldwide distribution, and remote sensing alone may not distinguish peat from rock or buried wood. Confirming another site would require field inspection, sediment or peat sampling, dating and ecological surveys.

The Mozambique study’s strongest conclusion is local and ecological: ancient land surfaces can become valuable marine habitat after sea-level change. Whether other deposits hold similar biodiversity or carbon stores remains an open, site-specific question.
