For a camera drone that stays at or below the 250-gram category boundary, the DJI Mini 5 Pro is the strongest specification-led choice in this guide. DJI lists it at 249 g with a 1-inch, 50 MP camera, up to 4K/60 HDR video, 4K/120 slow motion and nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing. The DJI Mini 4 Pro remains a capable lower-generation alternative with an under-249-g listing, a 1/1.3-inch 48 MP camera and omnidirectional sensing.
These conclusions come from manufacturer specifications and FAA guidance, not hands-on flying, laboratory measurements or independent image tests. Flight quality, wind handling, reliability, image quality in practice and real battery endurance can differ from the published figures. Current US prices and bundles also change by storefront, so verify the exact package before ordering.

What is the best drone under 250 grams?
The DJI Mini 5 Pro is the best-supported lead candidate when your priorities are camera capability, obstacle awareness and staying close to the 250 g limit. DJI lists the aircraft at 249 g, giving it only a 1 g margin below the category boundary. Its 1-inch 50 MP sensor is larger on paper than the Mini 4 Pro’s 1/1.3-inch 48 MP sensor, and its published video modes include 4K/60 HDR and 4K/120 slow motion.
The Mini 4 Pro is the practical alternative if its price, availability or bundle is better for you. DJI describes it as under 249 g and gives it omnidirectional obstacle sensing, 4K/60 HDR and 4K/100 slow motion. The two models are close enough that the decision should be based on the camera sensor, storage, battery configuration and the exact package offered, rather than on the model number alone.

Why the DJI Mini 5 Pro stands out on paper
249 g listed aircraft weight
DJI lists the Mini 5 Pro at 249 g. That figure is the aircraft configuration DJI specifies; it is not permission to assume every battery, propeller guard, filter or other accessory will keep the aircraft below the same threshold. Because the margin is only 1 g, weigh the complete takeoff configuration you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1-inch 50 MP camera
The camera uses a 1-inch sensor, an f/1.8 aperture and a maximum resolution of 50 MP. A larger sensor and wider aperture can be meaningful purchase factors for photographers who regularly work in dimmer scenes, but the specification alone does not prove a particular level of real-world image quality. No independent image test is established here.
HDR and slow-motion modes
DJI lists up to 4K/60 fps HDR recording and up to 4K/120 fps slow motion. The 120-fps mode is the higher headline rate in this comparison. Check the aircraft’s recording mode, resolution and frame-rate combination before a shoot because the maximum rate is not necessarily available in every color, HDR or storage setting.

Nightscape omnidirectional sensing
The Mini 5 Pro product description identifies nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing that combines a forward-facing LiDAR sensor with vision sensors. This is a hardware and feature claim, not evidence that the aircraft can safely avoid every object, branch, wire or low-contrast obstacle. Maintain visual awareness and follow the operating limits in DJI’s current documentation.
Internal storage and transmission
DJI lists 42 GB of internal storage and a maximum video-transmission distance of 20 km under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. The transmission figure is a controlled maximum, not a guaranteed range in a built-up area, near interference or under local power limits. Internal storage is useful when a card is full or unavailable, but it does not remove the need to plan media capacity for long shoots.
What the DJI Mini 4 Pro still does well
Under-249-g positioning
DJI describes the Mini 4 Pro as under 249 g. As with the newer model, use the weight of the exact aircraft, battery and fitted accessories when checking a regulatory category. Do not transfer the Mini 4 Pro’s listed weight to a different package without verifying it.
Camera and video capability
DJI’s comparison lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor, up to 48 MP still images, 4K/60 HDR and 4K/100 slow motion. Those modes remain substantial for a compact camera drone. The Mini 5 Pro’s published advantage is the larger 1-inch sensor, 50 MP maximum and 4K/120 slow-motion ceiling, not a completely different type of product.
Omnidirectional obstacle sensing
The Mini 4 Pro is described with omnidirectional obstacle sensing. That can be an important safety feature for pilots who move laterally, fly around subjects or use automated flight functions, but sensing coverage does not replace route planning, visual observation or compliance with local rules.

Storage trade-off
DJI’s comparison gives the Mini 4 Pro 2 GB of internal storage versus 42 GB for the Mini 5 Pro. If you record high-bitrate or slow-motion footage, this difference affects how often you must offload files or carry prepared storage media.
DJI Mini 5 Pro vs Mini 4 Pro: which should I buy?
Choose the Mini 5 Pro when the following matter most
- You want the larger 1-inch sensor and 50 MP maximum still resolution.
- You need the published 4K/120 slow-motion mode rather than 4K/100.
- You value 42 GB of internal storage instead of 2 GB.
- Nightscape omnidirectional sensing with forward LiDAR is relevant to your planned flying.
- You can verify that your chosen battery and accessories keep the takeoff configuration within the limit that matters to you.
Choose the Mini 4 Pro when these are the deciding factors
- The older model is available in a substantially better verified bundle or price.
- Its 1/1.3-inch camera, 48 MP stills and 4K/100 slow motion meet your needs.
- You want omnidirectional sensing but do not need the Mini 5 Pro’s stated camera, storage or sensing updates.
- The exact Mini 4 Pro configuration has a takeoff weight suitable for your local category and operation.
Do not decide from weight alone
Both products are marketed around the sub-250-g class, yet the battery and accessory combination can change the takeoff weight. A “light” aircraft on the product page does not automatically make every fully equipped flight legally equivalent. Keep the model, battery, propeller guards, filters and other fitted items together when checking the final weight.
How long can a drone under 250 grams fly?
For the Mini 5 Pro, DJI advertises up to 36 minutes with the standard Intelligent Flight Battery and up to 52 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. These are stated maximums, not typical usable time. Wind, temperature, flight speed, manoeuvres, payload, signal conditions and the reserve needed to land all reduce the time available for filming.
The Plus battery deserves special attention. A battery that increases endurance can also change the aircraft’s takeoff weight. Before using it, check DJI’s current battery specification, the complete aircraft configuration and the rules in the location where you will fly. Do not assume that a Plus-battery flight remains within a sub-250-g exception simply because the aircraft itself is marketed as 249 g.
Battery accessories worth considering
DJI lists a Mini 5 Pro Intelligent Flight Battery, an Intelligent Flight Battery Plus and a Mini 5 Pro Two-Way Charging Hub. The hub can charge batteries and transfer remaining power to one battery, according to DJI’s accessory description. Confirm model compatibility before purchase; a charging accessory designed for one Mini generation should not be assumed to fit another.

Plan for landing reserve
Use the advertised time as a comparison point, not as a countdown to zero. Set a return or landing point that leaves time for a safe approach, especially in cold weather, wind or unfamiliar terrain. The aircraft’s battery display and warnings should take priority over an advertised maximum.
Do I need to register a drone under 250 grams?
In the United States, the FAA says a drone weighing 0.55 pounds or less (less than 250 grams) and flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations is exempt from registration. That is a narrow recreational exception. It does not mean every sub-250-g flight is exempt, and it does not remove airspace, safety or operating requirements.
Business, public-safety and other non-recreational operations can have different registration obligations even when the aircraft is small. The aircraft must be evaluated in its actual operating context, not only by its marketing category. The FAA guidance used here was last updated March 18, 2024; check the current FAA rule before flying because requirements can change.
How to check your situation
- Weigh the aircraft in the exact takeoff configuration, including the battery and fitted accessories.
- Identify the purpose of the flight: recreational, business, public safety or another operation.
- Determine whether your recreational flight qualifies for the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations.
- Use the FAA’s current registration guidance for the registration decision instead of relying on the product name or a retailer description.
- Check airspace authorization, operating limitations and any state or local requirements that apply to the launch site and flight.
Does a drone under 250 grams need Remote ID?
Registration and Remote ID are related but separate questions. FAA guidance says drones that are required to be registered or are registered—including drones flown for recreation, business or public safety—must comply with Remote ID. A sub-250-g recreational aircraft that qualifies for the registration exception is not automatically placed in the same position as a drone that must be registered.

Buying checklist for a sub-250-g camera drone
- Confirm the exact model: Make sure the listing identifies Mini 5 Pro or Mini 4 Pro, not a similarly named accessory or bundle.
- Check the complete weight: Include the battery, propeller guards, filters and any other equipment fitted for takeoff.
- Read the battery line: Separate the standard-battery maximum from the Plus-battery maximum and verify whether the Plus option changes category eligibility.
- Verify the camera mode you need: Compare 4K/60 HDR with 4K/120 or 4K/100 slow motion, rather than assuming every high-frame-rate mode works in every setting.
- Inspect storage: The published internal-storage difference is 42 GB for Mini 5 Pro versus 2 GB for Mini 4 Pro.
- Confirm sensing coverage: Both are described with omnidirectional sensing, while the Mini 5 Pro specification adds forward LiDAR to its nightscape description.
- Check the controller and accessories: Storefront bundles vary. Confirm the controller, batteries, charging hub and spare parts actually included in the box.
- Verify price at checkout: Current US prices were not established consistently, and regional storefronts can show different options.
- Review current rules: Check FAA registration, Remote ID and airspace requirements for your operation before the first flight.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming “under 250 g” means no rules
The FAA exception is tied to a specific weight, purpose and recreational operating exception. It is not a general exemption from safe flying, airspace restrictions or every registration requirement.
Using the Plus battery without rechecking weight
The longer advertised battery life may be attractive, but the battery itself contributes to takeoff weight. Recheck the complete configuration every time the battery or a substantial accessory changes.
Treating maximum specifications as field performance
“Up to” transmission distance, flight time and frame rate describe manufacturer conditions or mode limits. They do not guarantee the same result in your weather, location, temperature or workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
Buying a bundle without reading its contents
A product page can present multiple packages. Confirm the controller, number and type of batteries, charging equipment and compatibility before comparing two offers.
Relying on obstacle sensing as an autopilot
Omnidirectional sensing improves the aircraft’s awareness, but it cannot guarantee detection of every wire, branch, reflective surface or low-contrast object. Keep the aircraft within the required visual and operational limits.
What is the final buying decision?
Buy the DJI Mini 5 Pro if its 1-inch 50 MP camera, 4K/120 mode, 42 GB storage and nightscape sensing justify the price and you can keep the exact battery configuration within your intended category. Buy the DJI Mini 4 Pro when its verified package offers the better value and its 1/1.3-inch camera, 4K/100 mode, 2 GB storage and omnidirectional sensing are sufficient. In either case, decide from the complete aircraft configuration and the rules for your operation, not from the headline weight alone.
