Humble has genuine standalone downloads for some games, yet its DRM status is title-specific rather than guaranteed across the store. In all three cases, “offline” applies to the features that do not depend on a network service; multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, timed events and similar functions may still require connectivity.
What “DRM-free” means for a PC game
Digital rights management (DRM) is any technical control that restricts how software is started, copied or used. In a game store, that can mean a mandatory launcher, an activation check, a recurring account sign-in, encrypted files, a store-specific executable or a server that must confirm ownership before the game opens.

A DRM-free purchase normally gives you an installer or archive that can be saved locally and run without contacting the seller. That does not automatically make every part of the game independent of the internet. A game can be DRM-free while its multiplayer servers, cloud synchronization, achievements, leaderboards, seasonal events or account-based features remain online-only.

Those distinctions determine whether you can reinstall years later, move a game to another PC, or play during an internet outage.
DRM-free stores at a glance
| Store | Installer access | Launcher or activation position | Offline-play evidence | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | Offline backup installers are available from the website after purchase. | GOG Galaxy is optional for single-player access. | Store terms and quality-assurance requirements call for offline single-player play. | Multiplayer and other online features can still need services; a listing may state an exception. |
| itch.io | Creators make their uploaded files available for download. | The platform says it adds no platform DRM and does not modify uploaded files. | Depends on the files and the game’s own design. | Each creator can choose a launcher, account check or online-only feature. |
| Humble Store | Some products include a standalone installer; others deliver a key for another store. | Varies by product and delivery method. | A standalone installer is documented for Klei’s Don’t Starve. | No current store-wide DRM-free guarantee is established by the evidence here. |
The table is a decision map, not a catalog ranking. Store policies, regional delivery choices and individual game builds can change, so the product page remains the final authority.
GOG: the strongest documented store-wide option
What GOG promises
GOG’s published definition of DRM-free distribution says a game has no DRM, copy protection or online-connection requirement, except where an online connection is inherent to multiplayer elements. Its terms also state that all single-player content should be playable offline unless a particular listing says otherwise.

- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption

The developer quality-assurance documentation applies the same expectation before a game is accepted: “all games on GOG have to be playable offline and without the Galaxy client.” This is stronger evidence than a marketing label because it describes a release requirement as well as a customer-facing policy.
How to obtain and preserve the installer
- Buy the game while signed in to the GOG website.
- Open your account’s game library and choose the entry for the purchased title.
- Use the website’s offline backup installer download rather than relying only on a Galaxy-managed installation.
- Save every installer file, language pack and required bonus component in a clearly named folder.
- Copy that folder to at least two separate storage devices, such as an external hard drive and a portable SSD, and keep one copy disconnected when not backing up.
- On a test PC, disconnect the network, run the installer and launch the game directly from its executable. Record any setup steps that are needed for a future reinstall.
Installers can be large and may be split by operating system, language or downloadable content. Keep the original files intact; do not assume that a later Galaxy installation can recreate an old build if the store changes its catalog.
What still needs an internet connection
GOG’s promise concerns single-player access, not every feature. Online multiplayer needs the game’s network service, and cloud saves require synchronization. Achievements, leaderboards, social functions, patches and timed content can also depend on a connection or a client. Read the individual listing when a game advertises any of these features, because the store terms allow exceptions to be identified there.

What the platform controls
itch.io describes itself as a marketplace that delivers the files creators upload. Its creator FAQ answers the DRM question directly: “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them. No modifications are made to the files you upload.” In practical terms, the platform does not wrap a creator’s build in a mandatory activation layer or alter it to insert platform DRM.

That policy is valuable when a developer provides a conventional installer, a portable folder or a compressed archive. You can preserve the downloaded files and launch them independently of the itch.io app. It does not, however, certify what the creator put inside those files.
Inspect the listing before paying
- Read the operating-system and architecture notes. A “download” may be a Windows installer, a macOS app, a Linux archive, a browser build or source code.
- Look for words such as launcher, account, login, activation, server, online-only or requires internet.
- Check whether the download is a complete build or an updater that fetches additional data.
- Read the creator’s installation instructions for dependencies such as a runtime, graphics API or separate mod files.
- Note whether multiplayer is peer-to-peer, server-hosted or tied to a service that could be retired.
Perform an offline test
- Download the files from the purchase or project page.
- Install or extract them while online so any required operating-system components are available.
- Write down the launch command or executable name.
- Disable Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable.
- Start the game directly, create a save and quit.
- Reopen it offline and confirm that the save loads.
If the game fails at this stage, the problem may be an embedded account check, a first-run downloader or a missing dependency rather than itch.io itself. Contact the creator using the project’s support channel and retain the exact error message.
Humble Store: verify the exact delivery method
Why a Humble purchase can differ from another Humble purchase
Humble sells several delivery types. A product may include files hosted for direct download, or it may provide a key that must be redeemed at another store. The presence of a Humble receipt therefore does not, by itself, tell you whether the game is DRM-free or whether a launcher will be required.
Recommended Free Tools
The documented example in this comparison is Klei’s Don’t Starve. Klei’s support instructions, updated May 22, 2025, tell Humble buyers to open their Humble purchase page and download a platform-specific standalone installer. That is a real DRM-free route for that title and delivery path.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Check before checkout
- On the product page, identify whether the item says “DRM-free download,” “standalone installer,” or a key for another platform.
- After purchase, open the order page and list every available download and redemption option.
- If only a third-party key is supplied, follow that platform’s activation rules; the Humble purchase is not a substitute for those rules.
- For a direct download, save the installer and run the offline test before relying on it for travel or archival use.
Do not generalize from the Don’t Starve example to the complete Humble catalog. The evidence establishes title-level availability, not a current store-wide promise.
How to buy a game for long-term offline access
Use this six-point product-page checklist
- Delivery: Is there a downloadable installer or archive, or only a redemption key?
- Launch: Can the executable run without the store client?
- Activation: Is an account sign-in required at first launch or every launch?
- Network: Which modes and features require servers?
- Updates: Is the download a complete version, and can patches be saved separately?
- Platform: Does the offered build match your operating system and hardware?
Save a copy of the product description and installation notes with the files. A store page can change, while a text note in your backup folder preserves what you bought and how it was supposed to run.
Test before you need the game
Testing is the only reliable way to catch a launcher dependency or first-run check that is not obvious from a badge. Install on the target operating system, launch once online if required for setup, then disconnect and repeat the launch. Create a save, close the game, reboot if practical, and verify that the save opens without a network. For a multiplayer title, test only the local or single-player portion; server availability is a separate risk.
Back up installers so “ownership” survives a broken drive
A download in your account is convenient, but it is not the same as a local archive. Use a simple three-copy approach: keep the working copy on your computer, a second copy on an external hard drive or portable SSD, and a third copy in another physical location. Disconnect at least one backup between updates to reduce the chance that accidental deletion or malware reaches every copy.

- Preserve the original filename and folder structure.
- Include license notes, serial numbers supplied with the product and installation instructions.
- Store checksums when the developer publishes them so a damaged archive can be detected.
- Keep installers for the base game and expansions together, with the required installation order.
- Refresh the backup when you download a major patch, but do not delete the known-working version automatically.
Backups do not remove legal limits. They preserve access to the files you obtained; they do not authorize redistribution or bypass a game’s own online service.
Offline does not mean feature-complete
Before choosing a store, separate the content you can preserve from services you cannot. A campaign, local skirmish mode or single-player puzzle may remain playable indefinitely. A competitive matchmaker, shared world, cloud inventory or seasonal event can disappear when its service closes, even if the executable still launches.
| Feature | Typical offline status | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player campaign | Often the part covered by a DRM-free policy. | Check the listing for exceptions and test after disconnecting. |
| Local saves | Usually available if the game stores saves on the computer. | Find the save location and include it in your backup plan. |
| Multiplayer | Requires a network connection and functioning servers. | Identify whether local multiplayer works without servers. |
| Cloud saves | Unavailable while offline. | Copy local save files manually before changing machines. |
| Achievements and leaderboards | May wait for synchronization or be unavailable. | Decide whether these are essential to your purchase. |
| Live events and updates | Usually online-dependent. | Check whether the game has a permanent offline mode. |
Common failures and practical fixes
The game opens the store client
Confirm that you are using the standalone executable from the downloaded installer, not a shortcut created by a launcher. If the title’s documentation says the client is optional, create a direct desktop shortcut and test it with the network disabled. If the game is delivered only as a key for another platform, it is not a standalone installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The installer runs, but the game asks for an account
Look for a first-run registration step, an embedded third-party service or an online-only mode. Recheck the product notes and contact the developer or store support with the exact build number. Do not assume that repeatedly entering credentials will create a durable offline license.
A saved game will not load offline
Determine whether the save was stored in cloud storage rather than locally. Reconnect once, download or export the local copy, then repeat the offline test. If the title uses an account-bound inventory, that portion may be impossible to preserve even when the campaign is usable.
The old installer no longer works on a new computer
Check operating-system compatibility, required runtimes and graphics drivers before concluding that DRM is responsible. Keep the installer, dependency installers and a note of the operating system on which it was tested. A DRM-free file can remain unactivated yet still depend on software that a newer system no longer includes.
Which store fits your priority?
- Choose GOG when a documented, store-wide offline single-player policy and website-hosted backup installers are your main requirements.
- Choose itch.io when you are comfortable evaluating each creator’s files and want the platform to deliver those files without modifying them.
- Choose a Humble title only after confirming that the specific product supplies a standalone installer rather than a key or launcher-managed package.
Whichever route you choose, download the files, test them without a connection and maintain redundant backups. That workflow—not a storefront label alone—is what turns a purchase into dependable long-term access.
