Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Driver Easy 5.5.5.4057 was released on November 15, 2017. The accompanying public announcement appeared on November 24, 2017, so those two dates refer to the same historical release at different stages. It is not the current Driver Easy version: the official version history lists Driver Easy 7.2.2.6490, released October 13, 2026. Version 5.5.5 matters mainly as an older release whose scan engine, translations, download behavior and interface were refined; the available release material does not establish that it remains supported or safe to obtain from an unofficial download site.
Driver Easy 5.5.5 at a glance
| Item | What the official release record says |
|---|---|
| Exact build | Driver Easy 5.5.5.4057 |
| Version-history release date | November 15, 2017 |
| Public announcement | November 24, 2017 |
| Current status | An older release; the history lists later versions, including 7.2.2.6490 on October 13, 2026 |
| Documented focus | More accurate hardware-driver matching, language improvements, a denser Update screen, steadier Free-version downloads, more precise progress reporting and bug fixes |
The date difference is not a contradiction. A version history normally records when a build was released, while a blog archive records when the company announced it publicly. For 5.5.5, November 15 is the build date and November 24 is the announcement date.

What changed in version 5.5.5
A revised scan engine
The most important change was in hardware identification. The release improved the scan engine so it could identify the correct driver for the same hardware even when that hardware carried different driver information. In the announcement, Sophie Luo wrote: “We improve our scan engine, so now Driver Easy can help you identify the correct driver for the same hardware even when it has different driver information.” The announcement says this produced “even more accurate scan results.”
This is a matching improvement, not a published benchmark. The release notes do not give a percentage for accuracy, a test population, or a comparison with a named competing product. A sensible interpretation is that the scanner became better at handling inconsistent or variant identification data; it does not prove that every device would be detected or that every recommended driver would be the best choice.
#1 Best Overall

Arabic and Dutch translations
Arabic and Dutch translations were improved. The notes do not enumerate every corrected string, so it would be inaccurate to describe this as a complete translation overhaul or to claim that all screens reached perfect language parity.
A more compact Update screen
Category bars in the Update screen were made smaller. The practical effect was a more compact list of driver categories, allowing more information to appear in the same area. This is a layout change, not evidence of a new update policy or a different driver catalog.
More stable Free-version downloads
The Free version received download-speed stability improvements. The wording concerns steadiness rather than a guaranteed maximum speed. No throughput figure, network condition or laboratory result was published, so the change should not be read as a promise that downloads would be faster in every environment.

Progress shown to one decimal place
Download progress was changed to display one decimal place. That extra precision was intended to make large-driver downloads easier to judge while they were in progress. It improves feedback in the interface; it does not shorten the download itself.
Crash and minor-bug fixes
A crash that occurred when only one driver update was available in the Arabic version was fixed. The announcement also mentions other minor bug fixes without listing each one. The documented crash fix is therefore specific to that situation and language; it should not be generalized into a claim that all crashes were eliminated.
What Driver Easy 5.5.5 was designed to do
Driver Easy 5.5.5 is a Windows driver-update utility. Its release notes show a workflow built around scanning hardware, matching devices with drivers, presenting available updates and downloading them. Version 5.5.5 specifically concentrated on making the scan result more reliable, presenting categories more compactly and showing download progress more clearly.

- Fix and prevent crashes and errors
- Fast and easy to use
- Improve PC speed
- Make driver problems a thing of the past
The release material does not provide a complete feature matrix for this build. It does not establish which Windows editions are supported, how many devices are in its catalog, whether every driver was sourced directly from each hardware manufacturer, or what backup and rollback functions were available in 2017. Those details should not be inferred from the short changelog.
Is 5.5.5 still current or supported?
No. It is a 2017 build, and the official history lists a much later release, Driver Easy 7.2.2.6490, dated October 13, 2026. That is enough to classify 5.5.5 as old rather than current. The available release records do not state an end-of-support date, a security-maintenance policy or continued compatibility for 5.5.5, so the safest wording is that support is not established—not that support definitely ended on a particular day.
Newer Windows versions and newer hardware can expose identification methods, signing requirements or device details that did not exist when 5.5.5 was published. The version history alone does not prove how 5.5.5 behaves on any particular modern computer. If you are troubleshooting a current device, use the operating system and hardware manufacturer’s current driver channels first, and treat an old utility as a historical build rather than a default recommendation.

5.5.5 compared with later versions
The official history documents later releases, but the supplied release information does not provide a feature-by-feature specification for every intervening build. The table therefore separates what is known from what is not established.
| Comparison area | 5.5.5 | Later releases |
|---|---|---|
| Scan-engine behavior | Improved matching when the same hardware presents different driver information | Specific later changes are not stated in the available material |
| Windows and hardware-detection technology | Not stated in the 5.5.5 release notes | Not stated as a complete, comparable specification |
| Backup, restore and recovery | Not stated | Not stated for the versions covered here |
| User interface and accessibility | Smaller Update-screen category bars; improved Arabic and Dutch translations; one-decimal download progress | Additional changes may exist, but are not itemized in the supplied record |
| Update controls | Free-version download stability was improved | Not stated |
| Security and installation support | Not stated | Not stated |
Because no independent performance test or adoption statistic was published with the release, there is no responsible basis for claiming that 5.5.5 was faster, safer or more accurate overall than a later build. The only defensible comparison is the documented change list and the fact that later versions exist.

Where can you download 5.5.5?
The release documentation confirms the build and its dates but does not identify a currently verified third-party archive for the installer. Do not treat a random mirror, file-sharing page or search result as an authoritative source merely because it uses the correct version number. An altered installer can carry a different risk from the original software, and the release notes provide no way to validate an unknown mirror.
Best Value
If you already have an installer supplied by your organization or saved from the period, use these checks before running it:
- Confirm that the file name and displayed version identify 5.5.5.4057, rather than a similarly numbered build.
- Open the file’s Properties and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. An absent, invalid or unexpected signature is a reason to stop.
- Record the file’s hash if your administrator or original archive provides one; a hash comparison is meaningful only when you have a trusted reference value.
- Keep a restore point or a known-good driver package available before changing drivers.
- Do not disable Windows security controls simply to force an old installer to run.
If you cannot verify where an installer came from, the safer course is to obtain the needed driver manually from the device or computer manufacturer instead of forcing an unknown copy of a 2017 utility onto a current system.

Quick Recap
- Identify the problem device. Press
Win+X, choose Device Manager, and look for a warning icon. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth or Universal Serial Bus controllers. Open the device’s Properties and note the exact model and the values under Details, especially Hardware Ids. - Record the current state. In the Driver tab, write down the provider, date and version. If the device is working now, this record gives you a reference point. If the device recently failed after an update, note when the failure began.
- Create a recovery point. Search Windows for Create a restore point, open System Properties, select the system drive, choose Configure if protection is off, then create a restore point. A restore point is not a substitute for a personal backup, but it gives you a way to reverse some system changes.
- Check Windows Update. Open Settings and go to Windows Update. Install offered driver updates, including any optional driver updates that you have verified are relevant to the device. Restart when Windows requests it.
- Use Device Manager for a targeted update. Return to the device, right-click it and choose Update driver. Try Search automatically for drivers. If you have downloaded a package from the computer or component manufacturer, choose Browse my computer for drivers and point Windows to the extracted folder. Do not select a package intended for a different model or operating system architecture.
- Prefer the manufacturer’s package when Windows finds nothing. Use the support page for the exact computer model or component. Match the model, Windows edition and 64-bit or 32-bit architecture where applicable. Download the package, read its release notes, close running applications and run the manufacturer’s installer according to its instructions.
- Restart and test one change at a time. Test the function that failed: connect to a known network for a Wi-Fi driver, play audio for an audio driver, wake the display for a graphics driver, or attach the affected USB device. Changing several drivers at once makes it difficult to identify the cause if something goes wrong.
- Roll back a bad update. In Device Manager, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that button available. If rollback is unavailable, uninstalling the device and selecting the option to remove its driver package can leave you without connectivity or display output, so have the replacement package ready first.
- Recover if Windows becomes unstable. Use System Restore to return to the restore point you created, or boot into Windows Recovery Environment and use a previously saved driver package. For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, the manufacturer’s recovery guidance is preferable to mixing packages from unrelated models.
Common mistakes with an old driver utility
- Confusing a release date with an announcement date: November 15, 2017 is the version-history date; November 24, 2017 is the public announcement date.
- Assuming the oldest build is safer: age alone does not establish compatibility, maintenance or security.
- Updating every device at once: a single problematic driver can affect networking, graphics or audio and make recovery harder.
- Ignoring rollback preparation: keep a restore point and the previous working package before replacing a critical driver.
- Trusting a version number without verifying the file: an installer labeled 5.5.5 is not necessarily the original 5.5.5.4057 build.
- Reading a changelog as a benchmark: the documented scan improvement and download-stability change do not include independent speed or accuracy measurements.
If you prefer an automated shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and no updater repairs every hardware problem.
