Choose a commission when you need reliable money or progression; choose an off-the-rack dress when creative control or material use matters more. A commission pays in two instalments and contributes to story, reputation, and unlock progress. An off-the-rack dress pays only when sold, after you have already bought its materials, but it lets you design without a customer brief.
Commission or off-the-rack: the decision at a glance
In Dressmaker, “non-commission” work is effectively an off-the-rack dress: you create it without a named customer request and list it for sale. The choice is less about which activity is universally more profitable and more about whether you value predictable cash flow and progression or unrestricted design ownership.

| Decision factor | Commission | Off-the-rack dress |
|---|---|---|
| Payment timing | Two coin payments: one when the commission is accepted and another when the finished dress is handed over. | One coin payment when the completed dress is sold. |
| Design direction | Must satisfy a customer brief, including the requested style and other stated requirements. | No customer brief; you choose the silhouette, materials, accessories, and finish. |
| Material risk | The first instalment helps fund fabric and notions before construction begins. | You purchase supplies before seeing the eventual sale offer, so your coin is exposed if the offer is weak. |
| Progression value | Supports story activity, reputation, and unlock progress in addition to coin. | Primarily a self-directed sale and a way to earn coin and reputation. |
| Work sequence | Brief interpretation, measurements or fitting, construction, quality checks, and handover. | Design, shopping, cutting, construction, accessories, finishing, and sale; the measurement step is removed. |
| Best use | Funding the next project, advancing the story, or working toward unlocks. | Experimenting, using spare materials, or making something while no suitable commission is available. |
The game does not publish a complete price equation or an authoritative unlock table. Treat any exact earning claims beyond the documented payment behavior as observations rather than guarantees.

How commission payments and requirements work
1. Accept the brief and collect the first instalment
Accepting a commission immediately produces a coin payment. This is not merely an advance in name: it is the funding that lets you buy the fabric and trims needed for the requested design. Because the payment arrives before construction, a commission limits the risk of spending your existing balance on a dress whose market value you do not yet know.

The brief is the governing specification. Read every requirement before buying supplies, because a beautiful dress that misses a requested feature can fail the purpose of the commission. The customer’s instructions also give the job its progression context: commissions are the work type tied to story activity, reputation, and unlock progress.
2. Build for the customer, not only for your own taste
Commission construction remains the normal dressmaking sequence, but it is client-oriented. You interpret the requested style, take or use the required measurements, choose compatible materials, cut the pattern, assemble and sew on the mannequin, add accessories, and finish the garment. Fit and requirement checks matter because the finished item is being evaluated against a brief rather than against your personal design standard.
The brief creates a useful constraint when you are learning the systems. It narrows the design space and gives you a concrete target for fabric, silhouette, quality, and finishing decisions. The trade-off is that you cannot freely change the concept halfway through without risking a mismatch with the request.
3. Hand over the finished dress for the second payment
When the completed dress is handed over, the commission pays coin again as the work reward. The two-stage flow makes commissions the dependable route for managing a tight budget: you receive funding before purchasing and a second payment after delivery.
That second payment is conditional on completing the work rather than simply accepting it. Keep enough time and materials available to finish the required construction; an accepted job is not useful if you cannot deliver the requested garment.
How an off-the-rack dress is made and sold
Off-the-rack work removes the customer request, not the making process. The documented sequence is:

- Design in the sketchbook. Choose the silhouette and visual direction without matching a client’s brief.
- Buy fabric and trims. Pay for all required materials from your own balance before a sale offer is displayed.
- Cut the pattern. Accurate cutting remains part of the quality outcome; cutting on the grain is associated with better quality in community testing.
- Assemble and sew on the mannequin. Construction and seam work still consume labour and affect the finished result.
- Add accessories. Trims and accessory additions can contribute to the labour component observed by community testers.
- Finish the dress. Complete the final presentation and quality steps before listing it.
- Sell it. The sale generates the single coin payment for the garment.
Measurement is the main omitted task because there is no client fitting. You still spend materials, construction effort, and time, so “off-the-rack” is not a shortcut to a finished dress. It is a self-directed production path with a different risk profile.

Where the money comes from—and what is still uncertain
Commissions provide known timing, not a published universal payout
The reliable economic fact is the timing: acceptance pays once and handover pays again. The exact amount associated with a particular commission can depend on the job and its requirements, and the available documentation does not provide a developer-published formula that predicts every payout.
For budgeting, count the first instalment as commission funding and reserve the second instalment as the completion reward. Do not treat an accepted commission as free money; you still need to complete the brief to receive the handover payment.
Off-the-rack work exposes your materials budget
For a self-directed dress, the useful calculation is:
net coin = displayed sale payment − material spending

If the offer does not cover the material bill, the dress may still be worthwhile for experimentation or reputation, but it is not a dependable funding plan.

Community testing identifies likely sale-price drivers
A community money guide reports four apparent drivers of an off-the-rack sale price: material, labour, quality, and prestige. It also reports that quality and prestige multipliers can each reach 150 percent in testing. Quality was associated with cutting on the grain and sewing at 100 percent, while prestige was associated with the player’s rank.
Those observations are not an official formula. The developers have not published the calculation, the thresholds, or the way the factors combine. The same testing described labour results as preliminary and apparently related to seams and accessory additions. Use these findings as practical hypotheses—make clean cuts, sew accurately, and understand that more construction may affect labour value—not as a guaranteed payout table.
Progression data has the same limitation
No authoritative source establishes every prestige threshold or unlock requirement. Community players have reported approximate unlock patterns, including reports involving roughly three dresses, but those reports should not be treated as developer-confirmed rules. If an unlock is your goal, commissions remain the safer choice because the game explicitly connects them to story and progression, whereas an off-the-rack sale is primarily an economic and creative activity.

What commissions add
- Brief interpretation: You must translate a customer’s wording into a workable design.
- Requirement checking: Materials, style, fit, quality, and other requested features need to remain aligned with the brief.
- Measurement or fitting: Client-oriented work adds a step that a self-directed dress does not require.
- Handover accountability: The job is not complete until the requested dress is delivered.
These tasks make commissions more constrained, but they also remove much of the uncertainty about what to make and why you are making it.
What off-the-rack work removes—and what it keeps
- Removed: The customer request and the associated measurement step.
- Kept: Sketchbook design, purchasing, cutting, sewing, accessory work, finishing, and selling.
- Added decision pressure: You choose the design and absorb the material cost before knowing the sale offer.
For a player who enjoys designing more than fitting, off-the-rack work can feel faster even though most construction actions remain. For a player who wants a predictable objective, the brief can make a commission feel more efficient because it prevents indecision.
Creative freedom and when it is worth giving up guaranteed progression
Choose a commission for directed creativity
A commission does not eliminate design choices; it gives them boundaries. You still select compatible fabrics, trims, accessories, and finishing decisions, but each choice must serve the customer’s request. This is the better format when you want to practise solving a design problem, build reputation, or move the story forward while earning coin.

Choose off-the-rack for experimentation
Self-directed production is useful when you want to test a silhouette, follow your own taste, or turn leftover materials into a finished item. It is also the practical fallback during a commission drought. Because there is no brief, you can try a design that would be difficult to justify for a client and learn how construction choices affect the eventual offer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat freedom has an opportunity cost: the dress consumes your materials before it contributes coin, and it does not offer the same documented story and unlock value as commission work.
A situation-based choice guide
| Your situation | Better first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Your balance is low and you need supplies for the next project. | Commission | The acceptance payment arrives before material purchases. |
| You are actively pursuing story beats, reputation, or unlocks. | Commission | Commission work is the progression-oriented route. |
| You have no active customer or want to keep playing during downtime. | Off-the-rack | You can start from your own sketchbook concept. |
| You have spare fabric and trims already in hand. | Off-the-rack | The material-cost exposure is lower when you are not buying a new stockpile. |
| You want to test a silhouette or personal aesthetic. | Off-the-rack | No brief restricts the design. |
| You want the least uncertainty about why the job exists and what success means. | Commission | The customer brief supplies a defined target. |
| You are comparing a sale offer with a large material bill. | Whichever has the safer economics | For off-the-rack work, calculate the displayed sale payment against your actual spending before proceeding. |
Practical checklists
Before accepting a commission
- Read the complete customer brief and identify every requirement.
- Confirm that the first coin payment covers the fabric, trims, and other supplies you expect to buy.
- Plan the fitting or measurement step instead of treating the commission as ordinary mannequin work.
- Reserve enough time and materials to finish and hand over the dress; acceptance alone does not complete the job.
Before starting an off-the-rack dress
- Decide whether the primary goal is coin, experimentation, reputation, or using existing materials.
- Sketch the design before shopping so the material bill reflects a settled concept.
- Record what you spend on fabric and trims.
- Favor careful grain alignment and accurate sewing because community testing links those practices with quality.
- When the sale amount appears, compare it with the recorded material spending before treating the result as profitable.
When a self-directed dress sells for less than expected
- Separate the material bill from the sale payment to see whether the loss came from expensive supplies, a weak offer, or both.
- Review cutting and sewing accuracy; these are among the quality-related observations reported by community testers.
- Check whether additional seams or accessories increased labour without creating enough sale value.
- Decide whether the next dress is an experiment or a money project. If coin is the priority, return to commissions until your balance is safer.
What real-world dressmaking teaches about workload (and what it does not)
Game actions are abstractions, but real-world commission pricing explains why client work feels heavier than simply sewing a garment. A guide by Lila Torres for Costumary advises makers to count all labour and overhead rather than pricing only the fabric. Her warning is direct:
“If that number feels too high to quote to the client, the right response is to evaluate whether you’re the right maker for this commission, not to lower your rate below sustainable levels.”
Those figures are real-world examples, not Dressmaker values. The guide gives illustrative hourly bands of $15–25 for hobby sewists, $30–50 for experienced sewists, $50–100 for professional couture or bridal work, and $75–150 for specialty skills. It also lists machine maintenance, needles, pressing supplies, patterns, and electricity as overhead that must be recovered.
Hidden time can be substantial in a real commission:
Best Value
- Tailor's Chalk: 4 Colors Available (Blue, Red, White, Yellow)
- 10 Pieces per Box, Hardness is HB for Durability
- Clear Fabric Marker: Ideal for Tailoring, Sewing, Quilting
- Sewing Chalk: Can Be Removed by Washing, Patching, or Using Alcohol
- Shockproof Packaging: Protects Chalk During Transportation
| Real-world task | Illustrative time or pricing note |
|---|---|
| Fitting appointments | 30–90 minutes each. |
| Client communication | About 1–3 additional hours. |
| Custom pattern drafting | About 2–10 hours. |
| Muslin or test garment | Adds labour and fabric. |
| Rush work | May justify a 20–50 percent premium. |
| Payment structure | A common example is a 50 percent deposit before work and 50 percent at completion. |
In the game, the comparable lesson is workload awareness: a client brief and fitting obligations add decisions that an off-the-rack dress avoids. Do not transfer the dollar rates, deposit practice, or time estimates into the game’s economy.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every off-the-rack dress is profitable
A sale payment is not the same as profit. Because materials are purchased first, an attractive final offer can still fail to recover your spending. Keep a simple material total and compare it with the displayed sale amount.
Treating community multipliers as hard-coded rules
The reported 150 percent quality and prestige multipliers are community-derived observations. They are useful for testing your technique, not a promise that every dress reaching a particular quality or rank will receive the same result.
Ignoring the brief because the design is attractive
Off-the-rack freedom does not apply to commissions. A commission is successful only when the finished work answers the customer’s requirements, so inspect the brief before buying and again before handover.
Forgetting that off-the-rack still requires construction
Removing measurements does not remove cutting, sewing, accessories, finishing, or selling. Plan for the full sequence rather than judging the option by its shorter client-facing setup.
Using self-directed work when progression is the urgent objective
An off-the-rack sale can provide coin and reputation, but commissions are the documented route for story and unlock progress. When progression matters more than experimentation, take the available commission that you can realistically complete.
Final verdict
Commissions are the default choice for a stable career loop: accept the job, use the first payment to fund supplies, complete the customer’s brief, collect the handover payment, and advance story-linked progression. Off-the-rack dresses are a deliberate alternative, not a replacement: they give you complete design control and a way to use spare materials or fill quiet periods, but they make you finance the project before you know its sale value. Use commissions to protect cash flow and progression; switch to off-the-rack when creative control or experimentation is worth the material risk.
