To complete Dressmaker’s Burlap Challenge, finish the first three commissions, unlock off-the-rack construction, and create three different off-the-rack dresses. Every garment fabric piece in each of those dresses must use Burlap; accessories are permitted. The three introductory commissions unlock the feature but do not count toward the challenge total. Because fan guides and extracted values can change after patches, treat the requirement bars and unlock message in your current game as the final authority.
What the Burlap Challenge requires
The challenge combines a progression gate with a three-dress production objective. You must first complete the early commissions needed to open off-the-rack construction. After that feature is available, make three separate dresses that the game recognizes as different designs. Each dress must use Burlap for every garment fabric component, including the bodice, skirt, sleeves, collar, lining or other cut fabric pieces shown by the pattern. Accessories can be added and do not have to be Burlap.

The player wiki describes the unlock more specifically: off-the-rack dresses become available once Fierce Funeral is over, whether that commission succeeds or fails. Names and progression labels can differ between builds, so follow the live unlock notification if your version uses different wording.

How many dresses count, and what makes them different?
The first three commissions are only an unlock gate
Those commissions are not part of the three-dress requirement. Finishing them opens the construction mode; it does not award one, two or three Burlap Challenge dresses. Begin counting only after the off-the-rack option is available.

Make genuinely distinct designs
Starting three copies of the same pattern is risky because the game may treat them as one design. Change the pattern components or silhouette between attempts: for example, use different bodices, skirts, sleeve choices or collars. Keep Burlap assigned to every fabric slot while making those design changes. Accessories can help distinguish a look, but do not rely on an accessory-only change if the game still displays the underlying garment as identical.
Check the counter after delivery
A dress can look complete when you press Finish Dress yet fail to satisfy a challenge condition at delivery. Open the challenge or commission panel after handing it in and confirm that the completed-dress count increased. If it did not, inspect every fabric slot and whether the game recorded the design as unique before beginning another attempt.
What Burlap contributes to scoring
Burlap is available from the start and has an extracted material cost of zero gold per metre. DressmakerCompanion’s 2026 extracted game data lists the material tags Brown, Uncomfortable +50 and Patterned +10. The same data says Burlap reduces 16 of the game’s 22 tracked style tags, so it is naturally strong for briefs that want an uncomfortable or patterned look but can work against glamour, romance, elegance, floral and other style targets.

Those figures come from game-data build 25482629 and public build 410 as reported on the Burlap page. They are not guaranteed permanent balance values. A patch can move a tag, change a cost or alter how a brief evaluates the material. Use the current in-game bars whenever they disagree with an older guide.
How Dressmaker evaluates a dress
A challenge or normal commission can test several independent categories. Passing one does not compensate for failing another.

Fabric-share requirements use cut area
If a brief asks for a minimum percentage of one fabric, a tiny trim or lining may not be enough. The game measures the area cut for each material, so a large skirt or bodice can outweigh several small pieces. Read the live percentage indicator after selecting the pattern and fabric rather than estimating from the number of components.

Distinct colours mean colour groups
A requirement for three different colours is not satisfied by adding three pieces in the same colour. It counts colour groups. Confirm that the preview or requirement bar recognizes the intended groups before delivery.
At-least and at-most directions matter
An at-least line must meet or exceed its threshold. An at-most line must stay at or below it; exceeding the number can fail the commission even when the dress otherwise scores well. This is especially important for accessory counts and fabric percentages.
A reliable Burlap Challenge workflow
- Finish the unlock commissions. Complete the early progression and wait for the off-the-rack option to appear. If your game names the gate differently, use the current notification rather than an old guide’s label.
- Open the challenge brief before cutting. Record every style, colour, fabric-share, accessory, budget and quality requirement shown for the active job. The Burlap Challenge’s all-Burlap rule does not override a separate normal-commission requirement.
- Plan three distinct silhouettes. Choose different combinations of bodice, skirt, sleeve and collar so each finished garment is clearly different. Keep a note of which design you have already delivered.
- Assign Burlap to every fabric slot. Check the bodice, skirt, sleeves, collar, lining and any other garment fabric component individually. A single substituted fabric can invalidate an otherwise correct dress.
- Add accessories deliberately. Accessories are allowed, but they can add cost or push an at-most count over its limit. Add them only when they support the brief, sale value or design distinction.
- Protect the quality result. Align the grain, set the intended fit and sew seams accurately. These craftsmanship factors determine quality independently of the material recipe.
- Recheck before delivery. Inspect every requirement bar, the fabric percentages, colour groups, accessory count, budget and displayed quality. Deliver only after all required thresholds are satisfied.
- Verify progress afterward. Confirm that the challenge records the dress and that the design is not treated as a duplicate. If the count remains unchanged, review the fabric assignments and design differences before spending more materials.
Validated recipe examples and what they demonstrate
These examples illustrate how the scoring system behaves; they are not universal substitutes for the live brief.

The Not Haughty result shows why free Burlap can still produce a strong brief-specific score: the Uncomfortable total combines Burlap’s +50 tag with pattern contributions, while the garment’s chosen components supply the Simple and Workwear values. The recipe still needs a separate quality result of 70.
Daring Heist demonstrates why an all-Burlap assumption is unsafe for ordinary commissions. Its 75% Burlap share is combined with two sequin fabrics and seven bows to meet Glamour, Playful, Sequin and three-colour conditions. The mixed materials raise the estimated cost to 26, and the dress must still reach Quality 80. Always copy the proportions and accessory count from the current brief rather than treating this example as a challenge-wide formula.
Why a correct recipe can still fail
The design passes style but misses composition
A high style score does not make up for a missed fabric percentage, colour-group count or accessory limit. Reopen the requirement panel and compare each bar independently.
A small Burlap piece was replaced
Pattern screens can retain a previous material selection in one slot. Inspect every garment component, including less prominent collars, linings and sleeves, before cutting.
The dress is accepted but quality is too low
Quality is not guaranteed by the solver recipe. Recut or resew with attention to grain alignment, fit and seam accuracy. A build that meets style and budget can still fail a quality threshold.
The challenge count does not move
Check whether off-the-rack construction was actually unlocked, whether the submitted dress used all-Burlap garment pieces, and whether the new design differs enough from the previous two. Verify the counter after delivery, not merely after finishing the garment.

The available references are unofficial player guides and extracted game-data pages. The player wiki states that it is unofficial and not affiliated with Cozy Lives or Free Lives. No official developer quote or official challenge specification establishes a competing rule set. Consequently, the live game brief, unlock state and post-delivery counter should overrule any archived page, especially after a patch.
Do you need real-world sewing supplies?
No. Buying burlap cloth, pins, scissors or a sewing machine cannot advance a Dressmaker save. They are real-world analogues only; the challenge is completed entirely through the in-game construction and delivery systems.
