In Tom’s Guide reviewer Ruth Jones’s two-week test on a Plank Firm Luxe, it cushioned her hips and shoulders when she slept on her side, but the firm mattress remained noticeable underneath. That’s a useful distinction: it changed the surface feel without turning the bed into a different mattress.
What the DreamCloud Softer Topper is
DreamCloud calls the product the “DreamCloud Softer Topper with Contouring Gel Memory Foam.” Its listing describes a 2-inch layer of premium gel memory foam with an open-cell design and a cooling-tech cover. The company says it is compatible with all mattress types and intended to add softness and pressure relief while retaining the mattress’s core support. What changed in the side-sleeping test
Tom’s Guide reviewer Ruth Jones says she slept on the topper for two weeks on the Plank Firm Luxe. She reported that the foam contoured around her hips and shoulders, making side sleeping more comfortable, and described waking with “fresh shoulders.” The firm mattress was still perceptible, however; the topper softened the contact surface rather than erasing the underlying feel. Jones also reported that the topper arrived rolled and vacuum packed, expanded quickly, and had a mild odor that dissipated with ventilation before bedtime. Those are observations from her setup, not guarantees about every delivery or sleeper.
Who is most likely to appreciate it?
Side sleepers who want more cushioning
The clearest fit in the review is a side sleeper who finds a firm mattress uncomfortable at the hips or shoulders but still wants to feel the mattress beneath them. Jones found that this 2-inch layer added cushioning in those areas during her test.

Back and stomach sleepers
Jones cautioned that the Softer model may feel too soft for back and stomach sleepers. That is her assessment, not a universal rule: comfort depends on the sleeper and the mattress underneath. If you already find your bed too soft, DreamCloud positions its separate Firmer topper for that opposite problem. Do not confuse its performance with the Softer model’s; they are different products. What it will—and will not—fix
A 2-inch topper can change the feel of the mattress surface, but Jones’s test suggests it may not make a very firm bed feel substantially different beneath that surface. If you want a more pronounced change, she points readers toward a thicker topper, including the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Mattress Topper. A topper is not a repair for deep sagging or structural failure. If the mattress has lost its support, adding a comfort layer will not restore its structure. Sleep Foundation’s mattress-topper guide
Temperature, movement, and care considerations
Temperature
Although DreamCloud describes the cover as having cooling technology, Jones found the surface neutral rather than cool to the touch and reported minimal heat buildup during her review. That single experience does not establish how it will feel for a particularly hot sleeper; “cooling” in the product description is not a guarantee of sleeping cool.

Attachment and cleaning
Jones reported that the topper had no corner straps and did not shift during her test under a fitted sheet, although the sheet shifted. She also said the cover has a zipper, but removing it voids the warranty, so she recommended leaving it on and spot cleaning.
