What will your PC do?
Start with the main workload: gaming, everyday use, content creation, or something else. The right balance of processor, graphics, memory, storage, and cooling depends on that use, so a single “dream PC” parts list would not suit every reader.

For gaming
Write down the games you play, your monitor resolution, and the frame rate you want. Check the recommended system requirements for the games that matter most before setting a parts list. Match the graphics card to those needs rather than choosing by name or reputation alone.
For general use and creative work
Consider the applications and tasks you use most. A graphics-intensive workload may call for a discrete graphics card, while lighter use may be served by integrated graphics, depending on the processor and software. Set a total budget before comparing components
Choose a spending limit for the complete build before shopping. Include the core parts—processor, motherboard, memory, graphics, storage, power supply, case, and cooling—as well as any peripherals you still need. Leave room for the components that matter most to your workload instead of spending on a feature you will not use.

Choose the case and its location early
Measure the space where the computer will sit, including clearance for cables, ventilation, and access to ports. Then check the case’s actual external dimensions and internal clearances. Labels such as “mid-tower” describe broad categories, not standardized measurements.

The case constrains motherboard size, graphics-card fit, cooler height, radiator and fan placement, drive options, and future expansion. Will these PC parts work together?
Compatibility is specific to the exact models. Use this checklist to build and review a candidate parts list:
- Processor and motherboard: Confirm the motherboard supports the processor’s exact socket and chipset requirements. Check the board’s expansion slots and features against the rest of the build.
- Memory: Verify the motherboard supports the memory generation and configuration you plan to use. Check the board manual for supported slots and installation guidance.
- Motherboard and case: Confirm that the case supports the board’s form factor and that the mounting points align.
- Graphics card: Check the exact card’s length, thickness or slot use, power requirements, and connector needs. Confirm it fits the case and that the motherboard and power supply can support it.
- Cooling: Verify that the CPU cooler supports the processor socket and fits inside the case. For fans or a radiator, confirm the case supports the intended size and mounting position.
- Power supply: Check that its rated capacity and connectors meet the requirements of the selected components. Allow sensible headroom for the planned system, but do not treat one wattage as suitable for every build.
- Storage and connections: Make sure the motherboard has the storage slots and connectors you need. Check that the case’s front-panel ports can connect to the board’s internal headers.
- Expansion plans: Check whether the board, case, power supply, and cooling setup can accommodate the upgrades you genuinely expect to make.

How do you check if parts go together?
- Write down exact model names. A brand or product family is not enough to confirm socket, dimensions, connectors, or support.
- Check manufacturer specifications and manuals. Verify socket and memory support, case clearances, cooler compatibility, card dimensions, PSU connectors, and motherboard headers against documentation for the exact models.
- Enter the full list in a compatibility checker. Review every warning rather than treating a “compatible” result as a guarantee.
- Resolve warnings against the documentation. If a dimension, connector, or supported configuration is unclear, do not assume it will work; check the manufacturer’s specifications or manual before purchasing.

Prepare your workspace before assembly
Choose a clean, uncluttered work surface and take steps to reduce static risk while handling components. Have the motherboard and component manuals nearby. A Phillips #2 screwdriver is the basic assembly tool Intel lists for installing a motherboard and graphics card; a specialty tool kit is not a prerequisite for planning the build.
