DRAM holds the data and instructions a processor is actively using and loses them when power is removed. NAND keeps data without power and appears in SSDs, phones, memory cards and embedded storage. A modern computer normally needs both, but they are not interchangeable.
Their prices can move in different directions because each market has its own mix of customers, products, inventories, manufacturing constraints and supply-allocation decisions. As of October 13, 2026, a TrendForce forecast dated September 30 projected fourth-quarter contract-price increases for both technologies, but the figures describe negotiated industry prices—not what a consumer will necessarily pay for a particular RAM kit or SSD.

At a glance: the difference that matters
| Question | DRAM | NAND flash |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Fast, temporary working memory for active programs and data | Persistent storage for files, applications and system data |
| Power requirement for retention | Needs continuous power; data is volatile | Retains data without power; data is nonvolatile |
| Typical finished products | Memory modules, soldered mobile memory, graphics memory and high-bandwidth memory | Internal SSDs, enterprise SSDs, eMMC, UFS, USB drives and memory cards |
| Typical buyers | PC, server, cloud, mobile, graphics, automotive and embedded-system makers | Client and data-center storage makers, phone manufacturers, automotive and industrial-system makers |
| What determines a product’s price | Capacity, bandwidth, generation, package or module design, workload and supply conditions | Capacity, interface, controller and firmware, endurance requirements, workload and supply conditions |
Calling both products “memory” is technically correct but practically misleading. DRAM supplies a processor’s active workspace. NAND supplies a device’s long-term capacity. The computer may copy an application from NAND into DRAM before the processor runs it, then write changed data back to NAND when it needs to persist.

Volatile working memory
Dynamic random-access memory, or DRAM, is the main working area used while a system is operating. The processor and other controllers repeatedly read and write active instructions and data there because access is designed for rapid, frequent operations. When the system loses power, DRAM no longer preserves the information it was holding.

That volatility is not a defect; it is the trade-off that makes DRAM suitable for active work. A system can keep frequently changing data close to the processor without treating every operation as a permanent storage transaction. More installed DRAM can let a computer, phone or server keep more active applications and datasets available before it must rely on slower storage.
DRAM families serve different workloads
Micron’s product descriptions identify several major DRAM families:
- DDR: the familiar family used in desktop, notebook and server memory modules.
- LPDDR: lower-power memory commonly integrated into mobile and thin-client designs.
- GDDR: graphics-oriented memory designed for high-throughput workloads.
- HBM: high-bandwidth memory used with demanding accelerators and other advanced compute systems.
The same filing lists applications across cloud data centers, servers, mobile devices, client PCs, automotive systems and embedded products. Therefore, “the DRAM market” is not one homogeneous product: a shortage of server DRAM does not automatically mean every consumer module has the same availability or price.
Chip, package and module are different things
A DRAM chip is a component. A memory module packages multiple chips and adds the electrical interface and physical format required by a particular platform. Mobile products may use memory integrated directly into the device rather than a removable module. Capacity, signaling generation, package design, validation and the target system all affect the price of the finished product.
What NAND flash is and where it appears
Nonvolatile storage
NAND flash is designed to retain stored information when power is removed. It is therefore used for the operating system, applications, photographs, documents and other data that must still be present after a shutdown. NAND can be supplied as a component, combined into managed storage, or incorporated into a complete storage product.
Managed NAND and finished storage products
Micron identifies NAND components, solid-state drives (SSDs), managed NAND and multi-chip packages among its offerings. eMMC and UFS are managed-NAND products used in mobile, automotive and industrial markets. “Managed” means the package includes the control functions needed to present usable storage to the host system rather than exposing raw flash cells directly.
An SSD is a system-level product, not simply a pile of NAND chips. Micron describes an SSD as combining NAND with a controller and firmware. The controller handles tasks such as translating logical addresses, distributing writes and managing the flash, while firmware determines how those operations are scheduled. Consequently, two SSDs with similar raw NAND capacity can differ in performance, endurance, features and price.

Consumer and enterprise NAND products
Client SSDs serve PCs and everyday personal devices. Enterprise SSDs are built for data-center workloads that can involve sustained throughput, heavy write activity, stricter service-level requirements and different qualification processes. Managed NAND in phones and embedded systems has its own capacity, power, packaging and reliability constraints. These categories consume NAND differently and negotiate prices through different channels.
How DRAM and NAND work together in one device
- Persistent data starts on NAND. The operating system, applications and user files remain on an SSD or other NAND-based storage while the device is powered off.
- The system loads active code into DRAM. During startup or application launch, the processor retrieves the instructions and data it needs from storage and places working portions in DRAM.
- Processors operate on the working set. Active calculations, open application state and frequently accessed data are read and written in DRAM while the system is running.
- Changes are committed to storage when persistence is needed. Saved documents and system updates are written back to NAND so they survive a restart or power loss.
- Capacity and speed are separate decisions. Adding DRAM increases working-room capacity; replacing a NAND-based drive increases persistent storage capacity. Neither upgrade substitutes for the other.

What drives DRAM and NAND prices
Demand from different workloads
Prices begin with how much of each product customers want, but demand is segmented. AI infrastructure and cloud expansion can increase demand for high-bandwidth DRAM, server DRAM and enterprise SSDs at the same time. Mobile, graphics, client-PC and embedded customers have different product requirements and purchasing schedules.
Micron’s fiscal-2026 Form 10-K said AI-driven data-center demand had accelerated memory and storage demand faster than the industry could increase supply. The company also reported that constrained supply alongside robust DRAM and NAND demand had led to increased pricing. That is a company disclosure, not an independent market forecast, but it explains why data-center demand can tighten several product categories at once.
SK hynix CFO Kim Woohyun described the shift this way in the company’s October 29, 2025 third-quarter results announcement: “With the innovation of AI technology, the memory market has shifted to a new paradigm and demand has begun to spread to all product areas.” The statement is Kim’s and SK hynix’s characterization of demand, rather than a neutral measurement.

Available manufacturing capacity
Supply cannot respond instantly to a demand increase. Semiconductor fabrication requires long planning cycles, qualified processes and significant capital. Even when wafer capacity exists, the right equipment, process generation and product qualification must be available for the specific DRAM or NAND product a customer needs.
Adding nominal capacity does not guarantee an equal increase in sellable output. Yield, process transitions and the mix of products running through a facility determine how many usable chips reach the market. A supplier may have room in aggregate but still lack capacity for a particular density, interface or performance class.
Allocation and product mix
Suppliers allocate output among products and customers. When demand exceeds available supply, they may favor server products, advanced processes or applications with stronger margins and strategic value. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook described suppliers prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products. Capacity directed to those products is capacity not available for every client, mobile or graphics variant.

Product mix also changes the average price reported for a market. A quarter with more high-performance or higher-capacity products can show a different average than a quarter dominated by mainstream parts, even if the underlying technology has not changed.

Packaging, testing and production flexibility
Front-end wafer fabrication is only one part of supply. Packaging, assembly and testing must also keep pace, and advanced products can require specialized packaging capacity. TrendForce said component supply, packaging and testing capacity, and production flexibility were limiting server DRAM supply in the fourth quarter of 2026. A bottleneck at any of those stages can delay finished products and support higher negotiated prices.
Inventory and procurement timing
Customers do not buy at a constant rate. A device maker with substantial inventory may reduce new orders even when end-user demand is healthy. Conversely, a buyer that expects future tightness may order early, temporarily increasing demand beyond current consumption.
TrendForce contrasted existing inventories that limited client-SSD procurement with continued strength in enterprise-SSD demand. The two segments can therefore experience opposite purchasing behavior while using NAND from related manufacturing networks. Inventory corrections can also make a market look weak for a period after an earlier rush to stock up.
Contracts, spot transactions and retail prices
“The price of memory” can mean several different numbers:
- Contract price: a negotiated price between suppliers and large customers, often covering a period or volume.
- Spot price: a shorter-term transaction price that can react quickly to immediate availability.
- Wholesale or module price: the price for a packaged component or memory module sold through a distribution channel.
- Retail price: the amount a consumer pays for a branded, finished product, including the controller, module assembly, warranty, distribution and retailer costs.
These prices can move at different times. A contract forecast should not be converted into a prediction for a particular retail SSD or RAM kit without knowing the product, region, channel, inventory position and date.
What the late-2026 market outlook actually says
TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 release, covering the fourth quarter of 2026, projected:

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
| Market segment | Forecast for 4Q26 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM contract prices | Increase of 10–15% quarter over quarter | A forecast for negotiated industry contracts, not an observed final price or a consumer checkout price |
| NAND flash contract prices | Increase of 15–20% quarter over quarter | A forecast for NAND contract markets, not a guarantee for any named SSD, phone or memory card |
The figures are projections made on September 30, 2026, not final observed results. The same outlook said enterprise SSDs were the only category expected to see price-growth acceleration, citing cloud-service-provider demand. It described client-SSD procurement as constrained by existing inventory and cost pressure, while NAND-wafer buyers remained cautious.
For DRAM, TrendForce described continuing demand for server products and tight mobile allocations, while expecting price growth to moderate in some segments. The implication is important: there is no single “DRAM price” or “NAND price.” Product class, buyer and transaction type determine which trend applies.
Why DRAM and NAND prices can diverge
Different end markets
A cloud provider expanding AI servers may simultaneously require high-bandwidth or server DRAM and large enterprise SSDs. A consumer-PC slowdown may reduce client-DRAM and client-SSD orders even while the data-center market remains tight. Mobile production introduces another cycle, with its own allocation and inventory decisions.
Different supply responses
DRAM and NAND use related semiconductor manufacturing ecosystems but are not identical products. Their process transitions, density targets, packaging needs and customer qualifications differ. A supplier cannot automatically turn every unit of available DRAM capacity into NAND, or every NAND wafer into a server-grade SSD.
Different product economics
A finished SSD includes a controller, firmware, packaging, testing, warranty and channel costs in addition to NAND. A DRAM module includes multiple chips, a module board and platform-specific validation. Changes in those non-memory components can affect finished-product prices even when the underlying chip price is stable.

- Identify the technology. Is the statement about DRAM, NAND wafers, client SSDs, enterprise SSDs or managed NAND?
- Identify the product level. A raw component, a contract module and a finished retail product are different markets.
- Check the time basis. “Quarter over quarter” compares periods; it does not state a one-day retail change.
- Check the geography and channel. A forecast for global contracts does not specify a particular country’s taxes, distribution costs or retailer inventory.
- Check whether it is a forecast or an observation. TrendForce’s 4Q26 numbers are forecasts issued September 30, 2026.
- Look for the customer driving demand. Server, AI, mobile, graphics and client-PC demand can produce different outcomes.
Choosing the right upgrade for a computer
When more DRAM is the appropriate fix
Choose a compatible DRAM upgrade when the problem is limited working capacity: frequent application reloads, slowdowns while many programs are open, or workloads that exceed the system’s installed memory. Confirm the computer’s supported memory type, capacity limit, physical format and any requirements for paired modules before buying. A memory module must match the platform; capacity alone does not establish compatibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When a NAND-based SSD is the appropriate fix
Choose an internal SSD when the need is more persistent capacity, faster storage access than an older drive, or a replacement for failing storage. Check the computer’s supported form factor and interface before selecting a drive. An SSD’s advertised capacity and performance describe the complete product, so review its controller, firmware features, workload rating and endurance information rather than comparing NAND capacity alone.

When both upgrades may be needed
A computer can have ample storage but too little DRAM for its active workload, or abundant DRAM while its storage is nearly full. Diagnose the constrained resource first. Increasing storage does not create more working memory, and adding DRAM does not increase the space available for files and applications.
Common misconceptions
“NAND is the same as RAM.”
No. NAND is a type of nonvolatile storage; DRAM is volatile working memory. Phones, PCs and servers may contain both, but the components perform different jobs and connect to the system in different ways.
“An SSD is just NAND.”
No. A finished SSD combines NAND with a controller and firmware, plus packaging, testing and other product-level components. Those elements influence behavior, endurance, compatibility and price.
“If AI demand raises memory prices, every memory product must rise equally.”
No. AI and cloud demand can tighten selected server DRAM, high-bandwidth memory and enterprise-SSD categories while consumer inventories, mobile allocations or client-SSD cost pressure produce a different result elsewhere.
“A contract-price forecast tells me what a retail product will cost.”
No. Contract forecasts apply to negotiated industry transactions. Retail prices also reflect product design, controller and firmware, module assembly, distribution, taxes, promotions and the seller’s inventory.
“More capacity automatically means better performance.”
No. Additional DRAM capacity can prevent excessive swapping, but speed also depends on the platform and workload. Additional SSD capacity provides more room for data, while interface, controller and firmware determine how the drive behaves under a particular workload.
Which indicators are worth watching
- Segment-specific demand: server and AI infrastructure, enterprise storage, mobile devices, graphics and client PCs should be tracked separately.
- Supplier allocation: movement toward advanced-process, server or higher-margin products can tighten other categories.
- Inventory: customer stock levels can delay new orders after a period of aggressive procurement.
- Capacity bottlenecks: wafer output, packaging, testing and production flexibility all affect finished supply.
- Price basis: always distinguish contract, spot, wholesale, module and retail figures.
- Product mix: a market average can change when the share of high-capacity or high-performance products changes.
For readers deciding whether to buy now, the practical question is not whether “memory” is rising in the abstract. It is whether the specific DRAM module or NAND-based storage product that fits the system is available at an acceptable price, and whether the purchase solves the actual capacity or performance constraint.
