Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Vocation Guide — Where to Change Vocations, Rank Up, and Spend Discipline Points

Looking for vocation obelisks in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen? The obelisk guide that appears in current search results is for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, not the original game. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen does not use that Obelisks of Benediction system. In the game named here, you change vocation through Asalam at the Gran Soren Union Inn, then develop the selected vocation by earning Discipline Points, buying skills and augments, and increasing its vocation rank.

First, resolve the “obelisk locations” mix-up

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen are separate games. Capcom’s manual index identifies the original release as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, with manuals for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions. A recent guide titled around “all obelisk locations” explicitly covers Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen and its Obelisks of Benediction.

That means there is no reliable list of “all obelisk locations” to give you for the original Dark Arisen. Following a map made for the sequel will not reveal a hidden vocation facility in Gran Soren or elsewhere in the first game. If your goal is to change class, unlock abilities, or build a hybrid character, use the vocation service and progression system below.

Where do you change your vocation?

Go to Asalam in the Gran Soren Union Inn

In the original Dark Arisen, Asalam provides vocation-changing services at the Gran Soren Union Inn. Enter the inn, speak with Asalam, and choose the vocation-related service from the conversation menu. The exact menu wording can vary slightly by platform or localization, but the destination is the same: the Union Inn in Gran Soren, not an obelisk in the field.

  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
  • Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.

If the option is not immediately visible, finish the current dialogue and speak to Asalam again rather than searching for a separate shrine. Vocation functions are grouped with the inn’s other character services, so read each available prompt carefully before confirming a change.

Prepare before confirming

  • Check which vocation is currently active for your Arisen or Pawn.
  • Review the Discipline Point balance shown in the vocation interface.
  • Inspect the skills and augments available for the vocation you want.
  • Remember that changing vocation changes the abilities and equipment rules associated with the active class; it is not the same as changing the character’s overall level.
  • Keep a save or rest point before experimenting if you are testing a new build and want an easy way to compare results.

A new vocation choice requires Discipline Points. The amount shown can depend on the vocation and the version of the game, so use the cost displayed by your own menu rather than relying on an old fixed-price list.

Character level and vocation rank are different

Character level

Your character level represents the character’s general progression. It is separate from the rank of the vocation currently equipped. Changing vocation does not erase the character’s accumulated level.

Vocation rank

Vocation rank measures development in a particular vocation. As the active vocation gains rank, additional skills, core abilities, and augments become available for purchase. Capcom’s class-system explanation states that rank progress is retained when you change vocation. In practical terms, switching away from a class pauses its development; returning to it lets you continue from its existing rank rather than starting over.

Progress type What it controls What happens when you switch vocation
Character level Overall character progression Remains on the character
Vocation rank Unlocks that vocation’s skills and augments Rank progress is retained for later use
Discipline Points Currency for vocation choices and abilities Spend from the available balance; changing class does not refund purchases automatically
Purchased augments Passive effects that can support other builds Remain available to equip across vocations, subject to the game’s eligibility rules

Why the distinction matters

A character can have a high overall level while a newly selected vocation remains at a low rank. That is normal, not a bug. The new vocation still needs to earn its own rank progress before its later abilities appear. Conversely, a vocation you developed earlier does not lose its rank merely because you spent time using another one.

How to upgrade a vocation step by step

  1. Reach Asalam. Travel to the Gran Soren Union Inn and speak with Asalam.
  2. Open the vocation service. Choose the prompt for changing or developing a vocation.
  3. Select the vocation. Highlight the class you want to use and read the displayed Discipline Point requirement before accepting it.
  4. Confirm the switch. Your active vocation changes, while your character level and previously earned vocation ranks remain intact.
  5. Use the vocation in play. Fight, complete quests, and continue normal gameplay with that vocation equipped so it can gain rank progress.
  6. Return to Asalam when new options unlock. Spend Discipline Points on the skills, core abilities, or augments that the current rank has made available.
  7. Review the build after each purchase. Equip newly purchased abilities where appropriate, then check your weapon, armor, and shortcut setup for compatibility with the new vocation.

The interface is the authority for availability and cost. A guide that lists a single Discipline Point price for every player may be describing a different vocation, an earlier edition, or a different platform state. If the amount in your menu differs, follow the in-game value.

How Discipline Points work

What they are used for

Discipline Points are the resource used by the vocation system. They are spent on vocation choices and on abilities offered by the active vocation’s training menu. This makes them different from ordinary character-level progression: a level increase does not automatically unlock every vocation ability, and owning enough points does not replace the rank requirement for abilities that have not yet become available.

How to spend them carefully

  • Unlock the vocation first. If you are changing into a class you have not used, reserve enough points for the displayed entry cost before buying optional abilities.
  • Prioritize the way you actually play. Buy an ability that improves your preferred attacks, defense, movement, or support role before purchasing a skill you will not put on your active bar.
  • Separate active skills from augments. Active skills affect what the current vocation can do directly; augments are passive effects that may continue to help after a later vocation change.
  • Check rank gates. If an ability is unavailable, earning more points alone may not solve the problem. Continue using the vocation until its rank unlocks the option.
  • Read the confirmation screen. The menu shows the point cost and the ability description before you finalize a purchase.

Why you should not rely on a universal price chart

The available guidance confirms that a new vocation requires Discipline Points but does not establish one verified price that applies to every vocation, version, and platform. For that reason, treat the displayed in-game requirement as definitive. This also prevents a common mistake: saving for an amount quoted by a guide, finding that your menu shows a different requirement, and assuming the save is damaged.

Vocation ranks: a practical progression plan

Start with a focused test period

When you first switch, spend enough time with the vocation to learn its basic attacks, movement, defenses, and resource demands. Do not judge the class solely by its starting skill selection. Early-rank options are often the foundation for a later setup, and the class may feel incomplete until additional abilities become available.

Earn rank before buying everything

Rank progress and Discipline Points support each other but answer different needs. Rank unlocks access to more of the vocation’s catalogue; Discipline Points pay for the options you choose. A sensible loop is to use the vocation, return to Asalam when the menu expands, buy the highest-value option for your role, and then test that change in combat.

Keep a record of unfinished builds

If you rotate between several vocations, note which abilities you still want and which ranks are incomplete. Because rank progress is retained, you can move to another vocation without losing the work, then return later when you have a specific reason to finish the original build.

Do not confuse a locked option with a missing location

An ability that is not yet selectable is normally a progression issue, not evidence that you missed an obelisk. Check the vocation’s rank and the Discipline Point balance in Asalam’s menu first. The original game’s progression is handled through the vocation service, not through a world map of activation stones.

  • New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
  • Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
  • Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
  • Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.

Augments: the reason to develop more than one vocation

Capcom explains that purchased augments remain available to equip across vocations. This is one of the most important reasons to explore classes beyond the one you intend to use permanently. Developing a second vocation can provide a passive effect that improves a later build, even if you never plan to keep that second vocation equipped.

A safe augment workflow

  1. Use Asalam to select a vocation with an augment you want to investigate.
  2. Raise that vocation’s rank until the augment appears in its available list.
  3. Spend the required Discipline Points to purchase it.
  4. Switch back to your preferred vocation at the Gran Soren Union Inn.
  5. Open the augment-equip screen and check whether the purchased effect is eligible for the current vocation.
  6. Equip it only after reading the description and confirming that it fits your available slots and build.

“Available across vocations” does not mean every augment can be stacked without limits or equipped in every situation. The game’s own eligibility and slot rules control what you can use at a given time. If an augment is missing from the equip list, verify that it was purchased, that the correct character is being edited, and that the current vocation permits it.

Choosing when to change vocation

Your situation Best next step Reason
You want a completely different combat role Save enough Discipline Points, then switch at Asalam The service changes the active vocation without deleting your character level or old rank progress
Your current vocation feels weak because options are locked Continue using it to gain rank before abandoning it Rank gates can matter as much as the point balance
You want a passive effect for a future build Develop the vocation that grants the desired augment, purchase it, then return to your main vocation Purchased augments can remain usable after switching
You are short on Discipline Points Keep playing with an active vocation and postpone optional purchases The menu’s point requirement is the authoritative cost
You are following an obelisk map Stop and verify the game title Obelisks of Benediction belong to the sequel’s guide, not this game’s vocation system

Troubleshooting common vocation problems

“I cannot find an obelisk.”

You are probably using information for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. In the original game, go to Asalam at the Gran Soren Union Inn. There is no corresponding list of Obelisks of Benediction to complete for vocation changes.

“Asalam does not show the vocation I want.”

Read the full service menu and check your Discipline Point balance. If the option is still unavailable, confirm that you are speaking with Asalam in the Gran Soren Union Inn rather than another innkeeper or service NPC. The exact cost for a new vocation should be taken from the menu in your own game version.

“My old vocation rank disappeared.”

Changing vocation should not erase rank progress. Select the former vocation again through Asalam and inspect its rank and unlocked options. The active vocation changes immediately, but the earlier vocation’s progress is retained for a later return.

“I bought an augment, but I cannot equip it.”

Make sure the purchase completed, then open the augment list for the correct character after switching back to the intended vocation. Check the current vocation’s eligibility and available slots. A purchased augment is not automatically equipped simply because it was unlocked.

“I have enough Discipline Points, but a skill is still locked.”

Check the vocation rank requirement. Points pay for an ability once it is available; they do not necessarily unlock rank-gated abilities by themselves. Continue using the vocation, then revisit Asalam after its rank advances.

“The price in a guide does not match my menu.”

Use the in-game price. The available evidence confirms the Discipline Point requirement in principle but does not establish a single universal cost for every vocation and edition. A mismatch is therefore not, by itself, a sign of a faulty save.

Platform and edition notes

Capcom’s manual index lists Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen manuals for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Menus, text, and controller prompts can differ between editions or later releases, but the title distinction remains essential: the original game’s vocation service is not replaced by the sequel’s Obelisks of Benediction. When a prompt or price differs from a screenshot in an older guide, rely on the labels and values shown by your installed version.

Quick checklist for upgrading a vocation

  • Confirm that you are playing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, not the sequel.
  • Travel to the Gran Soren Union Inn.
  • Speak with Asalam.
  • Check the Discipline Point requirement before selecting a new vocation.
  • Use the chosen vocation long enough to gain rank.
  • Return to Asalam to buy newly unlocked skills and augments.
  • Remember that vocation rank progress is retained when you switch away.
  • Test purchased augments in the equip menu after changing vocation.
  • Use the in-game cost and availability as the final authority for your edition.
  • Ignore “all obelisk locations” lists unless they explicitly refer to Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen.

The short answer

There are no Obelisks of Benediction to locate in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. Change vocation by visiting Asalam at the Gran Soren Union Inn. Spend Discipline Points on available vocation choices, skills, and augments; use the vocation to raise its rank; and remember that rank progress remains when you switch. Purchased augments can be carried into other vocations when the game’s equip rules allow them. If you were searching for an obelisk map, use the full title Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen instead, because that is the game associated with those locations.
