Dragon’s Dogma 2 vocations are its combat classes: each one determines your weapons, core attacks, role in the party, and dedicated skills. You begin with Fighter, Mage, Archer, or Thief. More vocations become available as the story advances, and the Arisen can eventually use several roles that Pawns cannot.
To change, go to the guild hall of a Vocation Guild. The official manual says you can change vocation “at any time,” but the cited instructions do not state whether a particular switch has a fee. Choose by the combat rhythm you enjoy—close defense, ranged precision, spell support, fast mobility, illusion control, or flexible weapon switching—rather than looking for one universally best class.

What a vocation does
A vocation is more than a cosmetic class label. It defines the weapon set your character uses, the attacks and defensive tools available in combat, and the vocation-specific skills you can unlock. It also changes how you contribute to a party: some vocations protect allies, some create openings or damage from a distance, and others require careful setup before delivering their strongest effect.
The game separates the player character, called the Arisen, from Pawn companions. Every Pawn has a vocation, and a party can include up to three Pawns. The result is a system in which your personal preference and your party’s coverage matter together. A close-range Arisen may value a support-oriented Pawn, while a spellcaster may want companions that can keep enemies away during a long incantation.

Capcom’s official web manual lists four starting choices. The PlayStation overview identifies six additional vocations that appear as the adventure progresses.
The four starting vocations
| Vocation | Weapon and range | What it is best at | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Sword and shield; close range | Defending itself and allies while fighting in the frontline | Requires you to stay near danger and manage incoming pressure |
| Mage | Magick; primarily ranged and support-oriented | Magick attacks, healing, weapon enchantments, and buffs | More powerful magick takes longer to cast, so positioning and timing matter |
| Archer | Bow; ranged | Targeting elevated enemies and weak points to assist the frontline | Rewards aim, distance management, and choosing targets rather than simply attacking the nearest foe |
| Thief | Daggers; close range with high mobility | Fast attacks, exploiting openings, and stealing items | Relies on movement and opportunity instead of the Fighter’s shield-based protection |
Fighter: the guarded frontline
Fighter is the clearest starting point for players who want to stand between enemies and the rest of the party. Its sword-and-shield identity combines direct melee damage with the ability to defend itself and allies. That makes it a natural choice when you prefer readable engagements: approach, block or withstand pressure, and keep enemies occupied at close range.
Pick Fighter if you want your own character to provide dependable frontline presence while other party members attack from safer positions. It is also a useful answer when you do not yet know what your preferred role will be, because its defensive purpose is easy to understand from the first fight.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mage: support and controlled spellcasting
Mage combines magick attacks with party support. The official overview specifically describes healing, weapon enchantments, and buffs in addition to offensive spells. That makes Mage the starting vocation for players who enjoy improving the whole group rather than measuring success only by personal damage.
There is a timing cost to its strongest effects: more powerful magick takes longer to cast. You therefore need a safe position, enough space, or allies who can keep enemies busy. Choose Mage if you like watching the battlefield, deciding when to heal or enhance an ally, and committing to a cast when the opening is secure.
Archer: ranged pressure and weak-point attacks
Archer uses a bow to attack from range. Its role includes targeting enemies that are elevated or exposing weaknesses, helping the frontline deal with threats that are awkward to reach in melee. The vocation rewards players who enjoy selecting targets and maintaining a useful angle instead of standing in the center of every fight.
Archer suits a deliberate ranged style: find a clear line, prioritize an important target, and keep contributing while tougher allies hold attention. It is a strong first choice when you want distance without committing to spell-casting preparation.

Thief: speed, openings, and opportunism
Thief fights with daggers and emphasizes speed, mobility, and exploiting openings. It can also steal items, giving the vocation a utility angle that the other starting choices do not share. The play pattern is active and opportunistic: move around a threat, recognize when it is vulnerable, and capitalize before the opening closes.
Choose Thief if you prefer constant movement and close-range aggression without the shield-focused defense of Fighter. It is less about absorbing pressure and more about avoiding bad positions while converting enemy mistakes into damage or stolen rewards.
The six vocations that become available later
The official PlayStation overview describes six further vocations. The manual confirms that additional vocations become available as the story progresses; it does not provide a single universal unlock checklist in the cited section.
| Vocation | Core identity | Eligibility and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Direct combat with two-handed weapons such as a greatsword and hammer; powerful charged strikes | Built around committing to heavy attacks and finding time to charge them |
| Sorcerer | Magick-focused offense with long incantations | Needs safe timing and positioning while a spell is prepared |
| Magick Archer | Ranged magickal arrows plus attacks and healing or support | Arisen-only; a powerful area skill costs maximum HP |
| Mystic Spearhand | Duospear melee combined with magick, including paralysis and thrown objects | Arisen-only; mixes close combat with control and unusual object-based attacks |
| Trickster | Censer-generated illusions that confuse enemies and empower Pawns | Arisen-only; its value comes from manipulation and party amplification rather than conventional weapon damage |
| Warfarer | Switches among vocation weapons during combat | Arisen-only; lower basic stats and the need to carry multiple weapons are part of the trade-off |
Warrior and Sorcerer: committing to a big payoff
Warrior extends the frontline concept into two-handed combat. Greatswords and hammers support powerful charged strikes, so the central decision is whether you can create enough time and space for a heavy attack. It is a fit for players who prefer deliberate commitments and large individual hits over rapid strings of light attacks.
Sorcerer is the advanced magick offense counterpart to Mage. Its long incantations make preparation even more important: you must read the encounter, choose a safe position, and trust the party to protect that window. Pick it when the satisfaction of landing a major spell outweighs the convenience of immediate, shorter actions.
Magick Archer: ranged damage with support and a real cost
Magick Archer fires ranged magickal arrows and can provide attacks, healing, and support. It is exclusive to the Arisen, so a Pawn cannot simply replace this role. Its powerful area skill has a clearly stated drawback: using it reduces maximum HP. That is a strategic cost, not a minor detail; reserve the ability for situations where its area impact justifies making your character more vulnerable afterward.
Mystic Spearhand: hybrid control
Mystic Spearhand combines melee and magick through a Duospear. The official overview calls out paralysis and the ability to throw objects, giving it a broader toolkit than a straightforward physical fighter. It is Arisen-only and suits players who want to stay active at close range while also using magickal control and the environment as part of their offense.

Trickster: battlefield deception
Trickster uses a Censer to create illusions that confuse enemies and empower Pawns. Its contribution is therefore indirect: you shape what enemies believe, create safer opportunities for companions, and increase the effectiveness of the party rather than relying on ordinary weapon damage as the main event.

Trickster is an Arisen-only vocation. Choose it when manipulating enemy attention and coordinating companions sounds more appealing than personally delivering every finishing blow.
Warfarer: maximum flexibility with equipment overhead
Warfarer lets the Arisen change among vocation weapons in combat. That flexibility can cover several ranges and attack patterns in one character, but it is not a free upgrade. The overview notes lower basic stats and the practical requirement to carry multiple weapons to access the vocation’s range of skills.
Warfarer makes sense when you actively want to switch tools during a fight and are willing to manage the resulting equipment burden. If you would rather have the strongest, most focused expression of one role, a dedicated vocation is easier to operate.
How to choose a vocation
There is no official statistic in the cited material proving that one vocation is objectively best. Use the following decision order to match a class to the way you actually want to play.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Choose your preferred distance
- Close range: Fighter, Warrior, Thief, and Mystic Spearhand keep you near enemies.
- Ranged physical attacks: Archer focuses on bow attacks and weak points.
- Ranged magick: Mage, Sorcerer, and Magick Archer use spell or magickal-arrow pressure.
- Flexible range: Warfarer can change weapon types, provided you accept its lower basic stats and multiple-weapon requirement.
2. Decide whether you want to protect, support, or disrupt
- Choose Fighter when protecting yourself and allies is central.
- Choose Mage when healing, enchantments, and buffs are as important as damage.
- Choose Trickster when confusing enemies and empowering Pawns is the main appeal.
- Choose Archer or Thief when you would rather create openings through target selection or mobility.
3. Check your tolerance for setup
Long casts and charged attacks produce larger payoffs but require a safe window. Mage, Sorcerer, and Warrior all ask you to think about timing before committing. Thief and Archer let you act more immediately, while Fighter offers a direct defensive loop. Mystic Spearhand and Warfarer add complexity through hybrid tools or weapon changes.
4. Account for Arisen-only roles
Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, and Warfarer are described as exclusive to the Arisen. If you want one of those identities, your own character must fill it; party planning cannot assign the same vocation to a Pawn.

How to change vocation
Capcom’s English manual gives a simple location-based instruction: visit the guild hall of a Vocation Guild. It says the change can be made “at any time.” Follow this route whenever you want to move to another vocation that you have unlocked:
- Find a Vocation Guild in the game world.
- Enter the guild’s guild hall.
- Use the guild-hall service for changing vocation.
- Select an available vocation and confirm the change.
- Review the new vocation’s weapon use and skills before entering a difficult fight.
The cited manual passage does not specify a fee or state that every change is free. Do not plan around a particular currency cost unless the game’s current interface shows it for your character. It also does not say that changing vocation automatically unlocks every other vocation; availability still depends on what you have unlocked through progression.
Unlocking vocations and Maister’s Teachings
Vocation Maisters are NPCs who have mastered their vocations. Capcom Promotion Producer Ken Mendoza explains that earning a Maister’s approval may lead to special tomes. In his words: “As you deepen your relationship with vocation maisters and earn their approval, they may grant you special tomes that will allow you to unlock new vocations or acquire skills known as ‘maister’s teachings’.” The statement appears in the PlayStation Blog article about the Warfarer vocation.
This establishes two different rewards:
- Vocation tomes can unlock a new vocation.
- Maister’s Teachings are special skills associated with a vocation.
The cited official pages do not provide a complete list of Maisters, every quest or location, exact approval conditions, Discipline Point costs, or a current skill-slot count after updates. Check the in-game objectives and menus for the requirement attached to the Maister you are pursuing instead of relying on an assumed universal cost or checklist.

Each vocation has dedicated skills to unlock. Skills are therefore part of the reason to change class: you are not merely swapping a weapon model, but moving into a different collection of combat options and a different priority for upgrades.

- Ask whether it solves a problem your current party actually has.
- Test it in a low-risk encounter so you can learn its timing and positioning.
- Keep the skill if it improves your normal combat rhythm; do not equip it only because its description sounds powerful.
Some advanced skills carry explicit trade-offs. Magick Archer’s wide-area attack, for example, reduces maximum HP. Long-incantation abilities on Mage and Sorcerer demand protection and timing, while Warrior’s charged attacks demand a comparable commitment in melee. The strongest-looking option is not automatically the most useful one if your party cannot create the necessary opening.

Pawns, party roles, and vocation restrictions
Pawns each have a vocation, and you can bring up to three of them. Because several advanced vocations are Arisen-only, your party cannot duplicate every role through companions. This makes composition a practical part of choosing your own class.
If you play a frontline vocation
Fighter or Warrior can occupy enemy attention at close range. A Mage Pawn can cover healing, weapon enchantments, and buffs, while an Archer Pawn can target elevated threats or weaknesses. The exact combination should follow the encounters you are facing and the gaps you notice in your own toolkit.
If you play a support or casting vocation
Mage, Sorcerer, or another spell-focused role benefits from companions that create time and space. A Fighter can provide a defensive presence, while a Thief can exploit openings that appear as enemies turn toward the frontline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you play an Arisen-only vocation
When you choose Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, or Warfarer, you are taking a role that a Pawn cannot simply reproduce. Build the rest of the party around the function you are not covering—frontline defense, healing, ranged pressure, or additional control—rather than trying to find an identical replacement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming there is one best class: The official descriptions present different strengths and costs, not a universal ranking. Match the vocation to your preferred distance, pace, and party job.
- Ignoring cast or charge time: Powerful magick and charged strikes need a safe window. If you repeatedly lose the opportunity, change your positioning or choose a faster-action vocation.
- Choosing Warfarer only for variety: Its flexibility comes with lower basic stats and the need to carry multiple weapons. Make sure you actually want to switch tools during combat.
- Forgetting Arisen-only restrictions: Pawns cannot fill every vocation. Plan around the roles available to companions.
- Relying on an unverified unlock list: Maister rewards and vocation availability are progression-dependent. Use the current in-game requirements rather than assuming a location, quest, or cost.
- Spending a high-cost ability without considering its drawback: Magick Archer’s area skill reduces maximum HP. Treat that reduction as part of the decision, not as an afterthought.
A practical first-choice guide

| Fight from distance and target weak points | Archer | Bow attacks can reach elevated enemies and exposed weaknesses |
| Move quickly and exploit openings | Thief | Daggers, mobility, and item stealing |
| Use heavy two-handed attacks later | Warrior | Greatsword or hammer and charged strikes |
| Build around major offensive incantations | Sorcerer | Magick-focused offense with long preparation |
| Combine ranged magick with healing or support | Magick Archer | Arisen-only arrows and support tools, with a maximum-HP trade-off on its area skill |
| Mix melee, magick, paralysis, and thrown objects | Mystic Spearhand | Arisen-only Duospear hybrid |
| Confuse enemies and empower Pawns | Trickster | Arisen-only illusion and party-control vocation |
| Change weapon types during a fight | Warfarer | Arisen-only flexibility, balanced by lower basic stats and multiple weapons |
What is confirmed—and what is not
The official material establishes the vocation identities, the four starting choices, the six later vocations, the Vocation Guild location for changing class, the Arisen-only restrictions, and the role of Maisters and their tomes. It does not establish a complete current database of skill names, exact Discipline Point prices, every unlock quest, or post-update skill-slot totals. Those details can change with game updates and should be read from the current in-game menus or a matching official announcement.
For a reliable decision, use the stable facts first: choose the weapon range and party function you enjoy, account for setup time and explicit drawbacks, and change at a Vocation Guild when another role better fits the way you want to fight.
