Solve the first five at the Mountain Shrine in Vermund, follow the Sphinx to the Frontier Shrine for Reunion and four more riddles, then use the Unmaking Arrow to defeat her and open the chest containing the Eternal Wakestone. A wrong answer can make the Sphinx disappear permanently, so do not guess—especially on Rumination, whose answer depends on where you found your first Seeker’s Token.
What you need to know before starting A Game of Wits
The Sphinx first appears at the Mountain Shrine in Vermund. The shrine is reached through dangerous terrain, and the approach can involve hostile creatures. Common routes run through the Misty Marshes or the Ancient Battleground; another approach leads beyond Worldsend Cavern. Bring healing items, enough stamina for climbing and travel, and a party capable of handling encounters on the road.

Make a manual save before speaking to the Sphinx and before submitting any answer that depends on your own play history. The quest is not forgiving: an incorrect response can cause the Sphinx to leave, ending the riddle sequence and its rewards. The ten-challenge sequence is split into five riddles at the Mountain Shrine, the Reunion event at the Frontier Shrine, and four more riddles at that second location. Reunion counts as a completed challenge for Recollection.

- Keep the main pawn available for Madness.
- Be ready to inspect a pawn’s creator information for Wisdom.
- Identify the exact location of your first Seeker’s Token before attempting Rumination.
- Do not spend a valuable item on Conviction unless you are comfortable receiving a duplicate of that item.
- Carry a bow before the final riddle if you intend to use the Unmaking Arrow afterward.
- Leave enough room in your inventory for quest rewards and key items.
The safest way to approach the quest is to treat every response as irreversible. Fixed-mechanic riddles can be prepared for in advance, but Rumination, Differentiation, and Recollection require you to verify personal information, visual details, or your completed-challenge count. Saving before each hand-in gives you a recovery point if you make a mistake.

How to reach the Sphinx at the Mountain Shrine
From Vermund, choose the route you know best through the Misty Marshes, the Ancient Battleground, or the path beyond Worldsend Cavern. The journey itself is not a riddle, but the location is easy to miss because the approach is long and hostile. If you are underprepared, restock before leaving and avoid arriving with a nearly depleted health bar or no healing reserve.
Hostile creatures can interrupt the climb and force you to spend healing or stamina before the actual challenges begin. Travel with a balanced party, clear immediate threats before interacting with objective items, and avoid starting a riddle while your party is in the middle of a fight. You do not need a special vocation to reach the shrine, but the final encounter does require access to a bow if you want to fire the Unmaking Arrow.
When you reach the Mountain Shrine, speak to the Sphinx to begin the sequence. The five riddles below can be completed in the order presented by the game. Their names, rather than a fixed numerical order, are the safest way to track progress.
The first five riddles at the Mountain Shrine
| Riddle | What completes it | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes | Take the Sealing Phial from the chest near the entrance of the passage and present it to the Sphinx. | Wakestone |
| Madness | Bring a beloved character to the Sphinx; the main pawn is accepted. | Portcrystal |
| Wisdom | Bring a pawn created by CAPCOM, such as SphinxFather or SphinxMother. | 1,200 Rift Crystals |
| Conviction | Offer an item to the Sphinx. | A duplicate of the offered item |
| Rumination | Return to the place where you collected your first Seeker’s Token and obtain the Finder’s Token there. | 3 Ferrystones |
Keep this table as a checklist, but do not assume the display order is identical for every playthrough. The Sphinx’s wording identifies the challenge, and the named mechanic is more reliable than remembering whether it was your first, second, or fifth conversation.
Eyes: take the Sealing Phial, not a random chest item
Enter the passage opened for the challenge and use the chest close to the entrance. The required object is the Sealing Phial. Deeper chests can tempt you into experimenting, but the challenge is solved by presenting the phial to the Sphinx. If you leave the passage with another item and submit it, you risk failing the riddle and losing access to the sequence.
Do not treat the passage as a general treasure run. The entrance chest is the useful landmark, and the phial is the item the Sphinx expects. Pick it up, return directly, and hand it over rather than opening additional containers and losing track of which object belongs to the riddle.
Madness: bring someone the Sphinx recognizes as beloved
Bring your main pawn to the shrine and present the pawn to the Sphinx. Walkthroughs identify the main pawn as an accepted beloved character, making this the most reliable interpretation of the challenge. If you use another character, make sure that character is actually recognized by the game as beloved before you commit to the answer.
The main pawn is therefore the low-risk solution. Have the pawn present before you start the conversation, and avoid dismissing or changing the pawn while preparing the answer. Once the Sphinx accepts the character, the reward is a Portcrystal.
Wisdom: verify the pawn creator before hiring
Search the Rift for a pawn whose creator is listed as CAPCOM. SphinxFather and SphinxMother are commonly cited examples. Player-created pawns can be made to look almost identical, so appearance alone is not proof. Open the pawn’s details and check the creator field before hiring and bringing the pawn to the shrine. The creator check is the important part of this riddle.
Do not rely on a search result, name, or costume by itself. Confirm the creator information in the pawn’s profile, then hire the verified pawn and take it to the Sphinx. A successful answer pays 1,200 Rift Crystals.

Conviction: choose the item you can afford to duplicate
Give the Sphinx an item you want copied. The returned reward is a duplicate of what you offered, so the practical decision is entirely yours: use a rare or expensive item only if receiving a second copy is worth surrendering the original temporarily. Do not hand over a quest-critical object or something you need immediately for another objective.
This is not a test with one hidden object that every player must find. You select the item, and the Sphinx returns a duplicate of that selection. Choose something useful but replaceable, check your inventory first, and remember that the reward mirrors the item you actually offer.
Rumination: reconstruct your own first-token route
Rumination has no universal map answer. You must go back to the exact place where you picked up your first Seeker’s Token, then collect the Finder’s Token that appears there. The first token you found may have been anywhere along your personal route through the game, so a location that worked for another player may be wrong for you.
Use your map markers, screenshots, exploration notes, and memories of your earliest excursions to identify that first pickup. If you cannot establish the location confidently, do not submit a guess: a failed answer can end the entire opportunity. Once you have the Finder’s Token, return to the Sphinx and present it.
Rumination is the riddle most likely to punish a rushed walkthrough. Guides can explain the rule, but they cannot supply your personal first-token coordinate. Search the places you explored earliest, compare them with any markers you left, and only answer when the location is certain. The reward for success is three Ferrystones.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter the fifth riddle: follow the Sphinx to the Frontier Shrine
When the fifth Mountain Shrine riddle is complete, the Sphinx flies to the Frontier Shrine. You have two practical choices:
- Ride with her: A quick player can grab onto the Sphinx as she departs and remain attached during the flight. This avoids a separate overland journey but requires precise timing.
- Travel normally: Leave the Mountain Shrine and make your way to the Frontier Shrine using your usual travel options. This is slower but avoids the risk of missing the grab or falling during the flight.
Attempting the ride is optional. If you miss the grab, do not panic or assume the quest has failed; travel to the second shrine yourself. The important transition is that the remaining content is no longer at the Mountain Shrine.
At the Frontier Shrine, meeting the Sphinx again completes the Reunion event. Reunion pays 100,000 gold and counts as a completed challenge when you later solve Recollection. Record it in your checklist even though it is an event rather than one of the four named post-Reunion riddles.
The four remaining riddles at the Frontier Shrine
The game can present these four riddles in a variable order. Do not assume that Contest is first or that Recollection is last. Identify each challenge by its name and mechanic, then apply the matching solution.
| Riddle | What completes it | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Contest | While wearing the Ring of Derision, stagger, grab, and throw the summoned opponent from the nearby cliff. | Ring of Ambition |
| Differentiation | Find the matching person among similar-looking NPCs and bring that character to the Sphinx. | Whimsical Daydream |
| Futility | Deliver the fragile amphora to Ser Maurits in Battahl, or bring Ser Maurits to the amphora instead. | Eternal Bond ring |
| Recollection | Move one statue for every riddle already answered, counting Reunion. | Unmaking Arrow |
Because the order varies, maintain a written count and note each reward as you receive it. That prevents you from mistaking an already completed mechanic for a new prompt and is especially useful when the Sphinx asks for the statue count.

Contest: use positioning rather than trying to win a normal duel
The Sphinx equips you with the Ring of Derision and summons an opponent. The challenge is solved by sending that opponent over the nearby cliff. Stagger the target, grab them when the opening appears, and throw them from the ledge. Treat the cliff as the objective; trading ordinary attacks in the open area wastes time and can make the positioning harder.
Move toward the ledge before committing to the grab, and avoid accidentally throwing the opponent away from the drop. The intended solution is environmental positioning, not reducing the opponent’s health through a conventional fight. Completing it grants the Ring of Ambition.
Differentiation: inspect hair, scars, and other small details
The Sphinx displays a person and places similar-looking NPCs in the surrounding area. Compare the target carefully with the candidates, paying attention to distinguishing features such as hairstyle and scars. The lookalikes are often described as Vergil and Dante, but the names are less useful than the visible details. Bring the matching character to the Sphinx rather than selecting the closest-looking model at a glance.
If you are uncertain, move between the candidates and inspect them from several angles before committing. A visual mismatch is enough to fail the challenge, and the Sphinx does not provide a forgiving retry for a wrong choice. The successful match rewards Whimsical Daydream.
Futility: move the person, not the fragile amphora
The amphora must reach Ser Maurits in Battahl without breaking. Carrying the vessel across a long route exposes it to falls, collisions, combat, and accidental throws. A safer solution is to locate the amphora, then bring Ser Maurits to it. This reverses the apparent delivery task while keeping the fragile object stationary.
Do not attack or drop the amphora while experimenting. Breaking it fails the riddle, so clear nearby threats and plan the NPC’s route before you begin the final interaction. The reward is the Eternal Bond ring. If you choose to carry the amphora yourself, make the route as safe and direct as possible; bringing Ser Maurits to the vessel remains the lower-risk approach.
Recollection: count completed riddles, including Reunion
Move one statue for every riddle you have already answered. The count is not limited to the four named challenges at the Frontier Shrine: Reunion is included. For example, after solving the five Mountain Shrine riddles and completing Reunion, the correct count is six statues.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use your completed rewards and opened riddle chests as a checklist. If you have lost track, count the challenges you know you finished instead of guessing from the order in which the game displayed them. The reward for a correct count is the Unmaking Arrow, which is needed for the Sphinx’s final encounter.
Do not count a riddle merely because you saw its prompt. Count only challenges you actually answered successfully, then add Reunion. This distinction matters if you paused between shrines or changed the order of the Frontier Shrine riddles.
Prepare for the Sphinx’s final encounter
Before submitting the final riddle, equip or carry a usable bow. The Unmaking Arrow is consequential, and the game presents a prompt when you are about to use it. Read that prompt and consider your save state before firing. If your character cannot use a bow at that moment, you may not be able to take advantage of the final reward opportunity.

After the last riddle, the Sphinx may attempt to leave. Attack to initiate the fight, then use the Unmaking Arrow on her beast body. Aim at a large body area such as the rear legs rather than her human face. The arrow’s effect is tied to this final encounter; do not fire it casually before the Sphinx is in position.

Defeat the Sphinx and open the gold chest
When the arrow hits the beast body, the Sphinx drops the Key of Sagacity and 10,000 gold. Pick up the key and use it on the large gold chest at the shrine. Inside is the Eternal Wakestone, the final high-value reward for completing the sequence.
Defeating the Sphinx completes A Game of Wits. Missing the final reward can also affect a platform’s trophy or achievement requirements, so keep a save from before the last answer if you are pursuing completion objectives and want a recovery point. The Eternal Wakestone is in the large gold chest, not simply in the Sphinx’s ordinary dropped loot, so collect the key and unlock that chest before leaving.
Failure prevention and recovery checklist
- Save before every submission. A wrong answer can make the Sphinx disappear and terminate the sequence.
- Separate fixed answers from personal answers. Eyes, Madness, Wisdom, Conviction, Contest, Differentiation, Futility, and Recollection have defined mechanics. Rumination depends on your first Seeker’s Token location.
- Verify identities and counts. Check a pawn’s creator for Wisdom, compare scars and hair for Differentiation, and count Reunion for Recollection.
- Protect fragile or unique objectives. Keep the amphora intact, and do not offer an irreplaceable quest item for Conviction.
- Plan the final shot. Obtain the Unmaking Arrow from Recollection, carry a bow, read the warning prompt, and target the Sphinx’s beast body.
- Confirm the chest. After the fight, collect the Key of Sagacity and use it on the large gold chest for the Eternal Wakestone.
All rewards from the Sphinx quest
Completing the sequence can provide a Wakestone from Eyes, a Portcrystal from Madness, 1,200 Rift Crystals from Wisdom, a duplicated item from Conviction, and three Ferrystones from Rumination. Reunion adds 100,000 gold. The Frontier Shrine riddles provide the Ring of Ambition, Whimsical Daydream, the Eternal Bond ring, and the Unmaking Arrow. The final encounter adds the Key of Sagacity and 10,000 gold, while the key opens the large gold chest containing the Eternal Wakestone.
Recommended Free Tools
The reward that requires the most personal preparation is Rumination’s three Ferrystones, because its correct location is determined by your own first-token discovery rather than a shared map coordinate. The other major risk is the final arrow: it is valuable for completing the encounter, but its use is consequential, so read the prompt and preserve a save before firing.
Frequently asked questions
How do you answer the Sphinx’s riddles in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
Match each riddle by name and mechanic. Use the Sealing Phial for Eyes, your main pawn for Madness, a CAPCOM-created pawn for Wisdom, an item you want duplicated for Conviction, and the Finder’s Token at your personal first Seeker’s Token location for Rumination. At the Frontier Shrine, throw the Contest opponent from the cliff, bring the correct lookalike for Differentiation, bring Ser Maurits to the intact amphora for Futility, and move the correct number of statues for Recollection.
Where do you find the Sphinx?
The first location is the Mountain Shrine in Vermund, reached through routes involving the Misty Marshes, Ancient Battleground, or the path beyond Worldsend Cavern. After five riddles, she flies to the Frontier Shrine. You can try to grab onto her during the departure or travel to the second shrine normally.
How many Sphinx riddles are there?
There are ten challenges in the full sequence: five riddles at the Mountain Shrine, Reunion at the Frontier Shrine, and four additional riddles there. Reunion is included when Recollection asks you to count completed challenges.
