The Sphinx’s first appearance in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is at the Mountain Shrine in Vermund, high above the Misty Marshes. The most clearly marked approach starts at Checkpoint Rest Town, crosses the Ancient Battleground, passes through Worldsend Cavern and Shrine Corridor, and ends at the shrine stairs.
Use the ruined keep in the battleground as your main landmark. Once you reach the Mountain Shrine, speak to the Sphinx to begin A Game of Wits. She relocates to the Frontier Shrine after the opening riddles, so the route below is for the first encounter.

Where is the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
For the first encounter, look for the Mountain Shrine in Vermund, positioned above the Misty Marshes. The Sphinx is waiting at the shrine rather than in the marshes themselves. The location is reached through a sequence of named areas: the Ancient Battleground, Worldsend Cavern, the Ancient Ruins, and Shrine Corridor.
Checkpoint Rest Town is the clearest starting reference because several walkthroughs use it to describe the approach. You can also begin from the Vernworth side while traveling toward Battahl, then take the fork leading toward the battleground. Either way, your immediate navigation goal is the ruined stronghold in the Ancient Battleground, not the shrine itself.

Which route should you take?
There are two reported approaches. The Ancient Battleground route has identifiable landmarks and a documented sequence through the cavern and corridor. A second approach climbs the hills northwest from the Misty Marshes. That hillside route can avoid the battleground, but available directions do not provide the same turn-by-turn detail, so it is better suited to players who are already comfortable reading the terrain.
| Approach | Starting reference | Landmarks | How fully the route is described | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient Battleground route | Checkpoint Rest Town, or the Vernworth road toward Battahl | Ruined keep or castle walls, Worldsend Cavern, Ancient Ruins, Shrine Corridor, shrine stairs | Landmark-rich, with a documented area-by-area sequence | Dangerous enemies on the approach and a powerful golem reported inside Worldsend Cavern |
| Misty Marshes hillside route | Hills northwest of the Misty Marshes | Northwestern climb toward the Mountain Shrine | Reported as an alternative, but detailed turn-by-turn landmarks are not established | Terrain orientation is less explicit than on the battleground route |
No reliable comparison establishes a distance, travel time, or measured difficulty for either route. Choose the battleground path when you want landmarks you can confirm as you move; choose the marshes climb only if you prefer a more direct-looking ascent and can keep your bearings without a fully mapped sequence.
What to prepare before leaving
The route crosses open ruins and a cave before the final climb. Guides warn about dangerous enemies in the area, and one specifically identifies a powerful golem in Worldsend Cavern. They do not establish a universal minimum level or gear requirement, so there is no authoritative level number to target. Prepare for the journey according to the strength of your current party rather than following an invented threshold.

- Set a clear destination. Keep the Mountain Shrine as your objective and treat the Ancient Battleground as the first intermediate landmark.
- Carry healing and curing supplies. The route is long enough to punish an unprepared retreat, and the cavern encounter can interrupt your progress.
- Keep your party together. Ruins and cave entrances can make it easy for pawns to lag behind or draw enemies away from the route.
- Use visual landmarks instead of guessing at the map. The ruined keep, the cavern entrance, the corridor, and the long stair climb are more useful checks than an assumed compass bearing once you are among the ruins.
- Leave room for a fight. Do not treat the battleground or Worldsend Cavern as a safe transit tunnel; the warnings about enemies are part of the route, not optional side content.
How to reach the Mountain Shrine through the Ancient Battleground
Follow this sequence when you want the most clearly documented path to the first Sphinx encounter.
- Start at Checkpoint Rest Town. From the town, head north toward the Ancient Battleground. If you are traveling from Vernworth toward Battahl, follow the road until you can take the fork that leads toward the battleground instead of continuing on the main route.
- Enter the Ancient Battleground and identify the ruined stronghold. Look for the remains of a keep or castle walls. These ruins are the key orientation point in the open area. If you are surrounded by battleground terrain but cannot see the stronghold, reposition until the walls or keep are visible rather than wandering randomly toward the hills.
- Work through the ruins toward Worldsend Cavern. The cavern lies behind or beyond the stronghold ruins on the route described by walkthroughs. Use the keep as your reference and search the section beyond the walls for the cave entrance. The important transition is from the open battleground into the cavern; you are not expected to find the shrine directly from the field.
- Enter Worldsend Cavern carefully. A powerful golem has been reported inside, and other dangerous enemies may also interrupt the passage. Check your party before committing to the interior, then move through the cave while watching for a safe path around combat. If the golem blocks the route, make the fight deliberate rather than assuming the cavern is a harmless shortcut.
- Continue out toward the Ancient Ruins. The route does not end when you leave the cavern. Follow the passage onward into the Ancient Ruins. This area is another confirmation that you are on the correct route: you should be progressing from the battleground’s cave system toward the shrine approach, not returning to the open field.
- Follow Shrine Corridor. From the Ancient Ruins, continue through Shrine Corridor. Stay on the route instead of turning back toward the cavern entrance. The corridor is the final named passage before the climb to the shrine.
- Climb the stairs to the Mountain Shrine. At the end of Shrine Corridor, take the stairs upward. The ascent leads to the Mountain Shrine above the Misty Marshes. When the shrine opens out ahead, you have reached the Sphinx’s first location.
- Speak to the Sphinx. Interacting with her at the Mountain Shrine starts A Game of Wits. If you are trying to begin the riddle sequence, make sure you have reached the shrine itself and not merely the marshes, battleground, or the lower approach.
How the landmarks fit together
The route is easier to remember as a chain of transitions rather than one uninterrupted trek:
- Road to battleground: leave Checkpoint Rest Town north, or approach from the Vernworth-to-Battahl road and take the battleground fork.
- Battleground to ruins: use the ruined keep or castle walls as the fixed point in the open area.
- Ruins to cave: search behind or beyond the stronghold for Worldsend Cavern.
- Cave to shrine approach: continue through the Ancient Ruins and then Shrine Corridor.
- Approach to destination: climb the stairs from the corridor to the Mountain Shrine.
This sequence also tells you where you are when the scenery changes. Open battlefield terrain means you are still orienting around the keep; enclosed rock means you should be in Worldsend Cavern; old masonry after the cave indicates the Ancient Ruins; and the corridor-and-stairs section is the final ascent.

What to do if the route is hard to follow
You cannot find Worldsend Cavern
Return to the ruined keep or castle walls in the Ancient Battleground and search from that landmark. The documented route places the cavern behind or beyond the stronghold, so looking for an unrelated cave elsewhere in the battleground is likely to send you off course. Re-establish your position at the walls before moving again.

You reached the marshes but not the shrine
The Misty Marshes are below the Mountain Shrine and serve as a geographic reference, not the final destination. From the marshes, either climb the hills northwest as the alternative approach describes or return to the better-marked battleground route. Reaching wetland terrain alone does not mean you have found the Sphinx.
You are inside a cave but the route seems to loop
Confirm that the cave is Worldsend Cavern and continue looking for the onward transition into the Ancient Ruins. The intended sequence is cavern, Ancient Ruins, Shrine Corridor, then stairs. If you emerge back at the battleground, you have likely retraced the entrance rather than found the passage onward.

The golem stops your progress
Worldsend Cavern is specifically reported to contain a powerful golem. Treat that encounter as the route’s major combat checkpoint: restore health, keep your party organized, and choose whether to engage immediately or reposition for a safer attempt. No source establishes a guaranteed level or equipment solution, so the practical answer depends on your party’s current capability.
You reached the shrine but the Sphinx is not obvious
Check that you climbed the stairs from Shrine Corridor to the Mountain Shrine rather than stopping at an approach area. The first encounter is tied to the shrine location, where interacting with the Sphinx begins A Game of Wits.
Can you use the Misty Marshes hillside route?
Yes. A separate guide describes climbing the hills northwest from the Misty Marshes to reach the Mountain Shrine while avoiding the Ancient Battleground. It is a legitimate alternative, but the available description does not supply a full sequence of turns, structures, or intermediate landmarks.

Use this option when you are already near the marshes and can identify the northwestern rise. Keep the shrine above you as the visual objective, and be prepared to return to the battleground route if the slope becomes difficult to read. Because the hillside directions are less detailed, it is not possible to promise a shorter trip, lower danger, or easier navigation than the documented cavern route.
What happens after the first meeting?
The Mountain Shrine is only the Sphinx’s first location. Once you complete the opening riddles, she moves to the Frontier Shrine. That relocation is why searching the Mountain Shrine after the initial encounter may not find her again. This guide covers reaching the first meeting and starting A Game of Wits; later riddles require following her to the Frontier Shrine instead.
Common questions
Where should I begin if I want the clearest directions?
Use Checkpoint Rest Town as your reference point and head north toward the Ancient Battleground. The ruined keep, Worldsend Cavern, Ancient Ruins, Shrine Corridor, and final stairs provide the most consistent sequence of landmarks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs there a confirmed minimum level for the Sphinx route?
No authoritative minimum level or gear threshold is established for this route. Reports only warn that the area contains dangerous enemies, including a powerful golem in Worldsend Cavern.
Does finding the Mountain Shrine automatically start the quest?
Interacting with the Sphinx at the Mountain Shrine starts A Game of Wits. Simply passing through the Ancient Battleground, Worldsend Cavern, or Misty Marshes does not place you at the first encounter.
