How do I choose a vocation?
Choose according to your preferred distance from danger and the kind of decisions you enjoy making. Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief are the four initial choices described in Capcom’s vocation manual. The choice is not permanent: you can change vocation at a vocation guild. Warrior, Sorcerer, and special vocations are also part of the broader roster; the initial four are not the whole list.

For a first pick, Fighter emphasizes guarding, Mage emphasizes spell timing and support, Archer rewards deliberate aiming, and Thief asks you to manage close-range risk through movement. Since you can change vocation later, use the starting choice to learn the combat role that appeals to you rather than treating it as a permanent build decision.
How should a beginner approach combat?
Match your action to your vocation
- As a Fighter: alternate attacking with protecting yourself or allies; use a timed block when you can read an incoming strike.
- As a Mage: look for a safe opportunity to begin an incantation, and use the vocation’s healing or strengthening magic when it helps the party.
- As an Archer: use Steady Shot when precision matters and look for weak points. Loose is easier to aim, but its range and damage are limited.
- As a Thief: use quick attacks, then evade with Swift Step rather than relying on heavy armor to absorb punishment.
Give your pawns a useful job
Pawn commands are situational, not a single best setting for every encounter. Try a command, observe how the party responds in that fight or exploration moment, and adjust. Use Capcom’s pawn-command manual for the command behavior:

- Go! lets pawns act independently. In combat they spread out; while exploring they can interact with nearby chests, mechanisms, and gathering spots in the indicated direction. If a pawn has just made a suggestion, Go! prompts it to act on that suggestion.
- To me! calls pawns to you. In combat they fight by the Arisen’s side.
- Wait! keeps pawns in place. During combat they stop attacking and focus on indirect aid.
- Help! prioritizes support, healing, and recovery.
- Explore! tells pawns to proactively gather materials. Hold Go! to use this command.
Long-press pawn commands can be enabled or disabled in Game Settings. Because the manual does not establish Switch 2 control mapping, check the game’s own controls and settings on that platform rather than assuming the PS5 button input is identical.

A pawn’s inclination describes how it tends to behave, not what it will do in every encounter. Capcom’s inclination guide describes four tendencies:

Use those tendencies to consider how a pawn may complement your own role. For example, a support-oriented tendency may appeal if you want help while taking the frontline, but an inclination is not a promise of a particular outcome.
Badges indicate accumulated knowledge
Monster badges relate to defeating a type of monster, while field badges reflect camping in a region. Pawns with relevant badge experience can offer beneficial advice, according to Capcom’s badge guide. Treat badges as a useful selection cue for experience and advice, not proof that a pawn is optimal for every party.
