Yes—DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition remains a compelling Switch 2 RPG. A dedicated Switch 2 edition, released September 24, 2026, keeps the Definitive Edition’s story and added content while offering a choice between graphics- and performance-priority modes. The important catch for existing players: the Switch 2 edition is separate, and save data does not transfer from the Switch version.
What is new in the Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo lists a dedicated Switch 2 edition that can only be played on Switch 2. It retains the content added in the original Definitive Edition, including additional chapters focused on party members, Japanese and additional English voice options, the ability to switch between 2D and 3D presentation, and an orchestral score. Nintendo says the new edition also adds optimization modes that let players prioritize graphics or performance.
That makes this more than simply running the Switch release on newer hardware. It is a distinct edition with its own listed modes; the original Switch game does not automatically become this edition when played on Switch 2.
Which mode should you choose?
Square Enix lists the two modes with different resolution and frame-rate targets. These are official specifications, not independent measurements of image quality, frame pacing, loading, or battery use.

The choice is straightforward: select Performance Priority if the 60fps target matters more to you, or Quality Priority if you would rather use the 1440p target. The published figures alone do not establish how consistently either target is maintained during play.
How does it compare with the original Switch version?
Nintendo says the original Switch edition is supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with how it runs on Switch. That backward compatibility is useful if you already own the game, but it does not add the dedicated Switch 2 edition’s listed priority modes.

Nintendo says there are no plans for an upgrade pack from the Switch edition to the Switch 2 edition. Nintendo and Square Enix also state that save data cannot transfer between the two versions. If you have an unfinished Switch playthrough, you should expect to start a separate save rather than continue it in the Switch 2 edition.

The decision therefore depends less on whether the RPG itself is worth playing and more on what you want from this release:
- If you want the new mode options and have not played the game, the dedicated Switch 2 edition is the version that lists them.
- If you already own the Switch edition and are satisfied with it, Nintendo says it remains playable on Switch 2 with Switch-consistent behavior.
- If you are considering switching editions mid-playthrough, factor in that saves cannot transfer and no upgrade pack is planned.
Availability and digital details can vary by region. Nintendo Canada lists its Switch 2 edition as a digital download with a 23.2 GB file size; check the local eShop for the current format and storage requirement in your region.
