ZERO and want its new fighters and their pre-fight interactions. It is a harder sell if the solo mode is your main reason to buy. NEO is an expansion for the base game, not a standalone Xbox title, and the review that set the verdict below was written from the Xbox Series X|S version.

What the expansion adds

Bandai Namco’s launch announcement, dated July 30, 2026, lists the expansion for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The publisher’s content list includes:

33 new playable characters drawn from DRAGON BALL, DRAGON BALL Z, DRAGON BALL SUPER, and DRAGON BALL GT

Four Episode Battles

Extra Battles

Four new stages

Limit Breaker Journey, a solo mode

The character, battle, and stage counts are publisher-announced figures. They are not independently counted.

The four stages

A pre-launch PlayStation.Blog preview by Zanda Ra, published July 23, 2026, names the four stages as Kami’s Palace, Kame House, Bitter Tundra, and Stratosphere. The preview describes Stratosphere as covering Earth and Planet Vegeta. The launch announcement confirms four stages but does not repeat the names, so the names should be read as coming from the preview.

Limit Breaker Journey is the expansion’s solo mode. According to the July 23, 2026 preview, you pick a character and develop that fighter through a sequence of encounters against progressively stronger opponents, moving across an interactive map.

#1 Best Overall
- Engage in heart-pounding, high-speed 3D battles that stay true to the anime and video game series
- This game contains breathtaking visuals and authentic combat moves like beam clashes, rush attacks, and movements too quick for the eyes to see
- Step into an arena that reacts to your every action including planet-razing ultimate attacks
- Watch the environment respond with stunning realism, and leave a trail of destruction in your wake as you battle to your heart’s content

Building a fighter

Progress is tracked through EXP and Battle Arts. The preview describes these as the main growth systems that shape how a character develops over a run.

Stats and style

Each character has six stats that you allocate yourself. The preview presents this as the way to shape a fighter toward your preferred playstyle. Six customizable stats are a publisher-described feature of the previewed mode, so the exact stat names are best checked in the game itself.

Retraining and where trained fighters carry over

Characters can be trained again, so a build is not permanent. The preview says trained characters can be used in player matches and in offline battles, which means the mode’s output is not confined to its own progression.

What the Xbox review found

Terrence Johnson at ZTGD reviewed the Xbox version and gave it 8/10, which the outlet labels “Great.” The publisher provided a review copy, as the review discloses. Johnson’s assessment is one reviewer’s opinion, not a consensus.

The roster and pre-fight interactions

Johnson praises the additional fighters and the interactions that play out before a fight. This is the core of his recommendation.

Combat

He says the combat feels polished, and he connects the mode to that existing combat as a point in its favour.

Limit Breaker Journey

Johnson calls the mode roguelite-like and comparatively middling. He reports a sharp difficulty spike, even on lower difficulty settings. His own words:

“I wish I liked the new game mode as much as all the new characters; it’s called the Limit Breaker Journey and its basically a roguelite.”

Price

The ZTGD review page lists “MSRP: $34.99” and “Price I’d Pay: $34.99.” That is the figure the outlet recorded. It is not a verified current Xbox Store price, and it may not apply in every region. Check the listing in your region before buying.

The free update released alongside it

The publisher released a free update at the same time as the expansion. It is not paid NEO content, so it should not be counted toward the purchase. Its announced mechanics are:

Sparking Boost: exchanges Skill Stock and a temporary stat reduction for increased attack power.

Chain Blast: lets a reserve ally follow an opponent’s launch with a Blast attack.

A Bandai Namco update notice dated July 29, 2026 documents version 3020.019.003.012.013 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, along with additional game changes. That notice dates one build; it does not show which version you are running today.

Existing Sparking! ZERO fans who want the new fighters

Strong

This is the reason ZTGD recommends the expansion.

Players mainly buying for solo progression

Weak

The reviewer finds the mode the weakest part, with a sharp difficulty spike.

Players who want the Episode Battles and new stages

Listed, not separately judged

They are part of the announced content, but the review does not assess them individually.

Players interested only in Sparking Boost or Chain Blast

Not a reason to buy

These mechanics come with the free update.

What the evidence does not cover

The verdict rests on a single reviewer’s Xbox playthrough. The review does not report frame rate, resolution, loading times, or any comparison of Xbox performance with other platforms, so this article makes no claims about those. No independent player reception or sales figures are available for this expansion.

Verdict

Asked whether the DLC is worth it, Johnson answered: “Yup, it sure is.” He recommends it especially to existing Sparking! ZERO fans. He says the characters and their interactions outweigh his reservations about the solo mode. If you are buying for the roster, that is the case the review supports. If the solo mode is your main reason, the review gives you reason to wait or look at the mode’s reception before paying.
