Dragon Ball Saiyan Saga Watch Order: Episodes and Movies to Watch

For the simplest main-story watch, choose Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai and watch continuously from the arrival of Raditz through the battles with Nappa and Vegeta. You do not need to stop for a movie. The early films are optional side stories.

If you want every relevant early-Z film, finish the original Dragon Ball first, optionally watch Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone as an approximate prequel, complete the Saiyan story in Z or Kai, then watch The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might as extras.

The short answer

The Saiyan Saga is a continuous television storyline, not a sequence that requires movie interruptions. Start with the first episode of Dragon Ball Z and continue through the Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta conflict. Dragon Ball Z Kai presents the same opening premise in an alternate edited version, so it can replace Z; it should not be watched immediately after Z as if it were the next part of the story.

  • Main story: Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai, watched straight through the Saiyan material.
  • Optional prequel-style extra: Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, before starting Z if you prefer approximate story placement.
  • Optional early-Z extras: The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might, after the Saiyan material.

This order separates the television narrative from films that were made as side stories. It also avoids treating movie placement as more exact than the available evidence allows.

Choose between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Z Kai

Dragon Ball Z

The original Z broadcast is the traditional presentation of the story. It includes the full television run, its original pacing and the episode numbering used by many older guides and home-video releases. Choose it if you want the version most associated with the original broadcast or if you intend to continue in the same presentation through later arcs.

Dragon Ball Z Kai

Kai is an edited presentation of the Z material. Toei’s catalog describes its opening in the same terms as the Saiyan setup: Goku and Gohan meet a stranger who claims to be Goku’s brother, the stranger reveals Goku’s extraterrestrial origin and kidnaps Gohan. That is the Raditz premise, not a separate prequel.

Use Kai in place of Z when you prefer its edited format. Because the two shows cover the same opening storyline, watching both consecutively creates duplicated episodes rather than additional plot.

What the Saiyan Saga television story includes

The practical boundary is defined by events rather than a single universal episode range. Begin with Raditz’s arrival and the revelation of Goku’s Saiyan heritage. Continue through the training and preparation period, the arrival of the Saiyans on Earth, the Nappa battle and the final confrontation with Vegeta. Watch that sequence without inserting a required film.

Episode labels vary by publisher and edition. One Crunchyroll story-arc guide labels episodes 1–6 as the “Raditz Saga.” Broader viewing lists commonly group the later Nappa and Vegeta conflict into the larger Saiyan Saga. Neither convention changes what you should watch: follow the story from Raditz through the end of the Vegeta conflict.

Story section What happens How to watch it
Raditz opening Raditz arrives, identifies Goku as a Saiyan and takes Gohan. Start at episode 1 of your chosen Z or Kai edition.
Preparation and training The heroes train and prepare for the arrival of the other Saiyans. Continue in sequence; no film is required.
Nappa conflict The Saiyans reach Earth and the Z Fighters face Nappa. Continue directly from the preceding television episode.
Vegeta conflict The surviving fighters confront Vegeta and the immediate Saiyan threat concludes. Finish the television sequence before moving to optional films.

Exact episode endpoints depend on whether a guide is using a narrow “Raditz Saga” label, a broader “Saiyan Saga” label, an edited broadcast, or a particular home-video numbering system. If a service or box set uses different numbers, identify the edition rather than assuming the numbers are interchangeable.

Where the early movies fit

The first three Z movies are best treated as optional side trips. Toei’s catalog supplies their official release titles, release months and runtimes. English-language marketing uses different names for some of them, so knowing both names prevents you from mistaking separate entries for separate films.

Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone

Toei lists the first film as Dragon Ball Z 1: Get Back My Gohan, released in July 1989 with a 42-minute runtime. English-language listings commonly call it Dead Zone.

A watch-order guide places Dead Zone after the original Dragon Ball series and before Z as an approximate prequel position. The same guide’s release-order list places it after Z episodes 1–11. These are two different organizing principles: one follows a rough story fit, while the other follows when the film was released. Neither makes the movie a required episode of the Saiyan Saga.

For a first-time viewer who wants the smoothest main plot, watch it either before Z or save it until after the saga. Do not pause the television story to force the film into a precise episode slot.

The World’s Strongest

Toei catalogs the second film as Dragon Ball Z 2: The Strongest Guy in the World, released in March 1990 and running 60 minutes. It is an optional movie side story, not a missing Saiyan Saga episode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most convenient placement is after you finish the Saiyan television material. This keeps the Raditz-to-Vegeta narrative intact and lets the movie function as an early-Z extra without requiring you to decide exactly where its events fit.

The Tree of Might

Toei catalogs the third film as Dragon Ball Z 3: Super Battle in the World, released in July 1990 with a 61-minute runtime. English-language marketing commonly calls it The Tree of Might.

Watch it as an optional side story after the Saiyan material. Be careful with episode lists: one English-language broadcast adapted or segmented the movie as episodes 46–48. Those numbers refer to that broadcast presentation, not to the standard standalone movie listing. A guide that shows episodes 46–48 may therefore be describing a particular edited television version rather than three ordinary Saiyan Saga episodes.

Two legitimate ways to organize the films

Order style Sequence Why choose it
Story-first optional order Finish Dragon Ball → optionally watch Dead Zone → watch Z or Kai through the Saiyan story → optionally watch The World’s Strongest → optionally watch The Tree of Might. Keeps the television story continuous and gives Dead Zone its approximate pre-Z placement.
Release-oriented order Start Z or Kai → watch the television story continuously → add the films according to their release history, beginning with Dead Zone, then The World’s Strongest, then The Tree of Might. Preserves the order in which the early films were released rather than trying to assign exact in-story dates.

Because these movies do not slot cleanly into the continuous television sequence, neither approach is a mandatory universal chronology. Pick the organizing principle you care about and label it clearly for yourself.

A step-by-step watch plan

Plan A: Main story only

  1. Complete the original Dragon Ball series if you want the preceding adventure and character context.
  2. Choose either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai.
  3. Start at that edition’s opening episode.
  4. Continue without movie interruptions through Raditz, the training period, Nappa and Vegeta.
  5. Move on to the next television arc in the same edition.

This is the cleanest route if your priority is understanding the main narrative with the fewest continuity decisions.

Plan B: Main story plus every early film

  1. Finish Dragon Ball.
  2. Watch Dead Zone before Z if you want the approximate prequel placement, or postpone it until after the saga if you prefer release-oriented viewing.
  3. Watch Z or Kai continuously through the Saiyan story.
  4. Watch The World’s Strongest.
  5. Watch The Tree of Might.

Do not count any of the three films as required television episodes. They add optional adventures around the early-Z period.

Plan C: You are already watching Z

Keep watching the episodes in order. If you reach a film recommendation, treat it as a pause point only if you want an extra; otherwise continue the series. There is no story obligation to rewind for a movie before finishing the Saiyan material.

Canon and continuity expectations

The consulted watch-order guide describes the pre-2013 films as largely non-canon extras. That is the guide’s editorial framing, not an official Toei declaration that establishes a universal canon policy. The practical implication is straightforward: the films are not necessary to follow the television plot, and details in a movie should not be used to override what the series establishes.

Use the films for additional action, settings and character encounters, not as checkpoints that determine whether you have completed the Saiyan Saga. The television episodes provide the required narrative path.

Episode-number pitfalls

  • Different saga labels: A guide may call only episodes 1–6 the Raditz Saga, while another groups Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta under one Saiyan Saga heading.
  • Different editions: Z, Kai, broadcast edits and home-video releases may present different numbering or cuts.
  • Movie-to-episode adaptations: A movie such as The Tree of Might may appear as numbered television episodes in a specific English-language broadcast.
  • Unclear endpoints: A bare range such as “episodes 1–35” is unreliable unless it names the edition and the arc convention behind it.

When sharing a watch list, identify the version—original Z, Kai or a named broadcast edit—and describe the endpoint by its characters and events as well as by numbers.

Common mistakes to avoid

Inserting every movie between episodes

This makes the opening story harder to follow and implies a precision the films do not have. Keep the television narrative together, then add optional movies at a clearly stated point.

Watching Z and Kai as consecutive seasons

Kai is an alternate edited presentation of the Z material. Select one for this story rather than treating Kai as the sequel to Z.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a release date proves story chronology

A film released in a particular month tells you when it reached audiences, not exactly where its events occur in the television timeline. Release order and approximate chronological placement answer different questions.

Using Tree of Might episode numbers without a version label

If a list mentions episodes 46–48, check whether it refers to the broadcast adaptation. Those numbers should not be mixed with a standard standalone-film list.

Streaming and availability note

Streaming availability changes by country, service and date. A current platform listing cannot be inferred from the watch order alone, so check the services available in your territory before starting and confirm whether you are selecting Z, Kai or a movie edition.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
