Dragon Age Games in Order: The Best Play Order for New Players

For a first playthrough, play the four main Dragon Age games in release order: Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, then Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This follows EA’s current franchise listing and avoids making a new player untangle the overlap between the first two games before getting to know the series.

Recommended Dragon Age play order

  1. Dragon Age: Origins
  2. Dragon Age II
  3. Dragon Age: Inquisition
  4. Dragon Age: The Veilguard

These are the four main games EA lists on its official Dragon Age franchise page. Starting with Origins gives you the earliest introduction among these games to the setting and its conflicts; continuing in release order lets you encounter later developments and returning references as the series presents them.

Why release order works better than strict chronology

The first two games do not fit neatly into a simple, one-after-the-other timeline. BioWare’s story recap describes Origins and Dragon Age II as sharing a universe, with their events overlapping around the Fifth Blight. It also says Dragon Age II spans ten years and includes events during and after that period.

That overlap makes release order the clearest recommendation for a newcomer: play each game as it was introduced rather than trying to interleave parts of two stories. The official recap supports the overlap, but does not provide a complete event-by-event chronology for all four games, so a more exact chronological sequence would imply precision the available account does not establish.

Can you start with Inquisition?

Yes. If you want to try one game before committing to the series, Dragon Age: Inquisition is a possible starting point. BioWare describes it as a choice-driven role-playing game in its games catalog. That description does not establish that it is the easiest entry for every new player, and starting there means meeting the series out of release order.

Where The Veilguard fits

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth game in EA’s listed sequence. EA and BioWare announced its worldwide launch for October 31, 2024, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the EA app, and the Epic Games Store. Those are the announced launch date and platforms, not a guarantee of current store availability in every region. See EA’s launch announcement.
