Choose the right level of help
You can increase the amount of information gradually instead of jumping straight to a full solution. This preserves the game’s deduction while giving you a recovery path when a clue is easy to miss.

- Talk to Mina. Exhaust the available conversation so the investigation context is clear and any resulting clue is recorded.
- Inspect Mina’s room methodically. Do not stop at the first obvious object. Examine the room’s interactive details and collect anything the game allows you to take.
- Read the newspapers. The manual specifically directs you to investigate several newspaper reports and compare their dates and locations. The comparison is part of the puzzle; it is not decorative background text.
- Open the notebook. Confirm that the new documents and reports have been added. The notebook is the record of what the game expects you to remember.
- Use help only after searching. If no new action is apparent, activate the help system to reveal remaining interactions, then return to the notebook and the room.
The lesson is transferable to every later chapter: read first, compare clues, search the entire scene, and combine objects only when the evidence suggests a purpose.
How to solve puzzles without guessing randomly
Read every document as an instruction
Dates and locations can be as important as names. A report may identify where the next investigation belongs, while a conversation can explain why an otherwise ordinary object matters. When a puzzle appears stalled, list the facts in the notebook rather than clicking every inventory item on every surface.

Check for a scene change after each discovery
New documents, completed conversations and successful combinations can change what is available. If an action appears to do nothing, inspect the notebook and rescan the room before assuming the game is broken.
Combine only plausible objects
Frogwares describes the game as letting players use and combine more than 150 objects, including examples such as a stake, statue, garlic and mirror. The large inventory is a puzzle system, not a reason to test every possible pair. Group objects by apparent purpose—container, liquid, clue, tool or defensive item—and try combinations suggested by the evidence.
Use the map as a deduction tool
When a report identifies a destination, open the map and select the matching location. The unofficial walkthrough’s early route, for example, has the player select Cairo after the London investigation. If a destination is unavailable, look for the missing conversation or notebook entry instead of assuming that a code is required.

The unofficial guide begins with the Godalming Manor investigation. Search the manor, follow the available conversations and documents, and use the notebook to establish the next destination. Once the map permits it, choose Cairo. In Cairo’s marketplace, the guide calls out several useful objects, including a scale, a flask and garlic. Gather the items the current clues justify, then revisit the relevant stalls or locations after each discovery; the route is driven by investigation progress rather than a hidden password.
Chapter 2: Cairo’s marketplace and museum puzzles
The Cairo sequence combines travel, object collection and museum-related puzzles. Keep newly acquired items visible in your inventory and read every report before leaving a location. If an object seems unusable, the guide’s sequence indicates that another clue or item must first establish its purpose. Follow the game’s map and notebook rather than trying to force a combination out of order.
Chapter 3: Vienna and Orlowski Manor
The walkthrough then moves to Vienna and Orlowski Manor. Treat the manor as a complete investigation: inspect rooms, collect documents, and finish conversations before moving on. The guide includes an abbey sequence in this chapter. One named combination is to use holy water with a chalice. That is a specific walkthrough instruction for the game, not a universal inventory recipe and not a cheat code.
Chapter 4: Transylvania and Dracula’s castle
The final chapter takes Van Helsing to Dracula’s castle in Transylvania. Expect the same structure—environmental examination, notebook clues, object use and route progression—but with the story’s endgame locations and threats. Because the guide is unofficial, its wording and order should not be confused with Frogwares’ manual. Use the in-game help and notebook as the authority for what your own installation currently allows; use the third-party guide as a solution reference when you intentionally want direct answers.
Which weapons and items work against Dracula?
The official user manual gives a clear in-game hierarchy. It states that four methods are effective against the blood-thirsty creature: direct sunlight, holy water, a wooden stake and a crucifix. It separately describes a silver weapon, garlic and a mirror as less definitive. These are the game’s classifications, not real-world vampire advice.

The manual’s wording does not provide damage values, durability figures or a weapon-upgrade tree. Do not infer that a silver weapon is equivalent to a stake, or that carrying garlic alone completes a defensive puzzle. Follow the scene’s clue and the interaction the game makes available.
Frogwares also advertises more than 150 usable or combinable objects and more than 40 characters on its Steam product listing. Those are publisher feature claims for the 2008 game, not independent measurements. They explain why inventory discipline matters: an object can be important because it opens a conversation, supplies a clue or completes a combination, even when it is not a weapon.

- Map destinations that become selectable only after the investigation advances.
