Tor Browser does not provide a universal video-download feature. If a site offers a download button, use that; otherwise, use the site’s available browser save controls only for videos you are authorized to save. The steps depend on the website and device, and some media may not be downloadable through the browser.
How to save a video in Tor Browser
-
Open the video page in Tor Browser and check whether the site provides its own download option. Use that option if available and permitted for the video.

-
If the site has no download option, try the browser’s ordinary save controls for media the site makes available. The exact controls vary by site, operating system, and device; there is no single sequence that applies to every video.

Save the file without opening it automatically. Tor Browser is a browser, not a video-downloading service, and saving a file does not mean that opening it later will keep its network activity inside Tor.

Why a video may not play or offer download controls
The site’s own design and Tor Browser’s security level can affect playback. At the Safer level, HTML5 audio and video require a click to play, and JavaScript is disabled on non-HTTPS sites. At the Safest level, HTML5 audio and video also require a click, while JavaScript is disabled by default on all sites. These protections can make some page features unavailable. Tor explains the trade-offs in its security-level guidance.

- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]

If you choose to change the security level, consider the privacy trade-off: lowering protections may make a site function more fully, but it reduces safeguards. Tor notes that settings can be changed and the browser restarted. Do not assume that changing the setting will make a particular video downloadable.

Prefer an HTTPS address. Tor Browser’s HTTPS-Only Mode upgrades a connection when the site supports HTTPS. If the site offers only HTTP, continuing uses an unencrypted connection; avoid doing so when confidentiality matters. HTTPS protects the connection to the site, not the legality, trustworthiness, or safety of the video file. See Tor’s secure-connections guidance.

Why downloading is not the same as viewing safely through Tor
A file saved in Tor Browser may make new internet requests when opened in another application. Tor warns that documents, including DOC and PDF files, can contain internet resources that the application may fetch outside Tor. An external application’s network activity could expose your non-Tor IP address. Avoid automatically opening downloaded files while online, and do not open files you do not trust. Tor’s best-practices guidance describes this risk.

Do not use torrent applications over Tor. Tor Project warns that torrent clients may ignore proxy settings and make direct connections, potentially revealing your real IP address. Torrent traffic can also slow the Tor network.
