How to draw on your phone with layers and light
Use this as a starting workflow, not a fixed recipe. Tool names and screen placement can vary with app version and device.

- Choose a canvas. Start a new canvas at a size that suits the illustration you want to make. A simple portrait or still life is enough to practice depth.
- Block in large shapes. Pick a pencil or pen brush and sketch the main forms before adding detail. Think in overlapping shapes: an object in front should cover part of the object behind it.
- Separate sketch, color, and shadow. Put these on separate layers so you can adjust color or shadow without redrawing the sketch. Keep the sketch layer as a guide while you lay in flatter color shapes.
- Choose a light direction. Decide where the light comes from. Keep the brightest areas toward that side, and place shadows on the opposite side and where forms meet. A new shadow layer makes it easier to revise the shape or strength of the shadows.
- Sample colors from a reference. Use the reference window to keep an image visible while you work, or use the eyedropper to sample a color. Use reference images as guides rather than tracing details you do not intend to reproduce.
- Add texture selectively. Try a suitable brush or material for a surface such as fabric, paper, or hair. A softer brush can help blend a shadow; a sharper brush can clarify an edge. Too many competing textures can make forms harder to read.
- Review the silhouette and contrast. Zoom out occasionally. Check that overlapping forms are still distinguishable and that the light and shadow make the main shapes legible.
Tools that can make a drawing feel more dimensional
Layers for flexible edits
Layers let you keep a sketch, base colors, and shadows independent. That separation is useful when a shadow is too dark or a color needs changing: adjust its layer rather than repainting the whole image. Keep the layer stack understandable with a small number of purposeful layers while you learn.
Brushes and materials for surface and edge
Use brush choice to signal form as well as texture. A pencil-like brush suits rough construction; a firmer pen can define an edge; a watercolor-style brush or airbrush can make softer transitions. Materials can add surface detail, but they work best when they support the object’s shape rather than obscure it.

Rulers and other drawing aids
Rulers can help with controlled lines and perspective, while manga frame tools are aimed at panel layouts. Text tools are useful for labels or lettering. These features are optional: a beginner can build convincing depth with shape, overlap, and light before using specialized tools.
Filters and mesh-form editing
Filters can alter an image’s appearance after the main forms are in place. Mesh-form editing is another listed tool for changing shapes. Treat both as finishing or correction options rather than substitutes for deciding how the objects are arranged and lit.

Do you need a stylus to draw on your phone?
No. You can begin with the input available on your phone; a stylus is optional. Pressure sensitivity is a separate matter: it depends on a supported phone-and-stylus combination, not simply on having a stylus. Before buying, check ibisPaint’s supported stylus list for your exact device and the connection requirements.
For example, ibisPaint lists SonarPen for Android devices with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, with an adapter caveat, and S Pen support for compatible Samsung devices. Its list also notes 3D Touch pressure sensitivity on supported older iPhones; newer iPhones do not have screen-based 3D Touch pressure sensitivity. Compatibility and features depend on the specific model, so a generic stylus should not be assumed to provide pressure sensitivity or palm rejection.

What the free and paid editions include

Custom brush patterns and saving your work
If you start importing or using original brush patterns, note two limits: free users are limited to up to five imports, and using original brush patterns in ibisPaint X on Android or iPhone/iPad prompts a video ad unless you have Premium, the Ad Removal Upgrade, or the paid version. You can export or share finished work. ibisPaint also describes cloud storage for syncing work among phone, tablet, and PC, but syncing needs to be configured; check the app’s current instructions and account requirements rather than assuming files upload automatically.
