Choose the right touchpad driver route
There is no single touchpad driver package that works for every laptop. Windows Update is the easiest recommended starting point; Device Manager provides update, reinstall, and rollback options; the manufacturer’s support page is the manual-download route for a package matched to your exact computer.

Try Windows Update first
Microsoft Support calls Windows Update “the recommended method to update the touchpad drivers.” Driver availability can vary by device, so the update may not appear for every computer.

- Open Settings.
- Open Windows Update in Windows 11 or Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10.
- Check for updates. If your version of Windows offers optional driver updates, open the optional updates area and select an applicable touchpad or pointing-device driver.
- Install available updates and restart if Windows requests it.

Update the driver in Device Manager
If Windows Update does not offer a driver, check Device Manager. The touchpad may appear under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices; its name varies with the hardware.
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu search.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices, and look for the touchpad or a relevant pointing device.
- Right-click the likely device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow any prompts. If no update is found, check Windows Update.

Reinstall the touchpad driver if updating did not help
Reinstalling the touchpad through Device Manager may help when an update leaves the touchpad unresponsive or behaving incorrectly. Microsoft says this process makes Windows attempt to reinstall the device and, for touchpad troubleshooting, forces Windows Update to download the latest drivers.
- Save your work before starting.
- In Device Manager, locate the touchpad under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices. Confirm the device carefully before removing it.
- Right-click the touchpad device and choose Uninstall device. Confirm the action if prompted.
- Restart Windows. Windows will attempt to reinstall the device; then check Windows Update for the driver.

Roll back a driver after a recent update
If the touchpad problem began immediately after a driver update, the previous driver may work better. You need administrator permissions, and the rollback option may not be available for every device.
- In Device Manager, right-click the touchpad and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available, then follow the prompts.

Download a driver manually from the computer maker
For a manual installation, identify the laptop’s exact make and model, then visit its manufacturer’s official support page. Choose a touchpad or pointing-device driver that matches both your Windows version and system architecture. If the maker provides more than one package, follow its model-specific installation instructions.

Know when to contact the manufacturer
If Windows Update, Device Manager update or reinstall, and the appropriate official driver package do not restore the touchpad, contact your computer manufacturer for model-specific support. Those results alone do not establish whether the cause is a driver issue or a hardware problem.
