Choose synthetic insulation when damp weather, sweat, or stop-start activity makes faster drying and better performance when damp more valuable. A hybrid can split the difference, but no insulation type alone guarantees warmth: the jacket’s construction, insulation amount and placement, fit, layers, activity, and weather all matter.
Down vs. synthetic insulation at a glance
| Your priority | Usually points toward | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Cold, dry weather and low pack weight | Down | Protect it from sustained wetting; a water-resistant finish does not make it impervious to wet-out. |
| Damp or changeable weather | Synthetic | A shell may still be needed for rain and wind protection. |
| High-output or stop-start activity | Synthetic or hybrid | Insulation amount and breathability matter; avoid overdressing. |
| Compressibility for travel or backpacking | Down | Compare the whole garment and its fill weight, not fill power alone. |
| Lower price or easier care | Often synthetic | Prices and care instructions vary by garment; check the maker’s label. |
| Down-like warmth with more moisture tolerance | Hybrid | Construction varies, so check where each kind of fill is placed. |
These are broad use-case guidelines, not a claim that every synthetic jacket outperforms every down jacket. REI, in its insulated-jacket guide, frames down as an effective insulator, but not the only option.
How down and synthetic differ in real use
Down: light and compressible, but vulnerable to wet-out
Down clusters trap air and provide strong warmth for their weight. They compress well, making down jackets useful when you need a warm layer that takes little room in a pack. The trade-off is moisture: wet down dries slowly and loses insulating performance. In unsettled weather, wear it under a protective shell and avoid relying on a water-repellent finish as full rain protection. Patagonia’s down-versus-synthetic guide and Outdoor Research’s comparison describe this moisture trade-off.
Synthetic: more forgiving in damp conditions
Synthetic fills generally dry faster and retain more warmth when wet or damp than down. That makes them a practical choice for changeable weather, sweaty efforts, and activities where you may repeatedly heat up and cool down. Their common trade-offs are greater weight and bulk for comparable warmth, and potentially more frequent washing, as REI notes. A shell may still be necessary in rain or wind; synthetic insulation is not the same as waterproof outer fabric.

Activity matters as much as weather
For low-sweat, stationary use in dry cold, down’s warmth-to-weight and packability can be especially useful. For energetic or stop-start use in damp or variable conditions, synthetic or hybrid insulation is often a better fit. These are starting points: a heavily insulated jacket can be uncomfortable during exertion regardless of fill, while a lighter layer may suit movement better.
Fill power is not a jacket warmth rating
Fill power describes the volume, in cubic inches, occupied by one ounce of down. For example, 650 cubic inches per ounce is 650-fill-power down. It measures loft per unit of down, not the total insulation in a jacket or a guaranteed warmth level. Patagonia’s fill-power explanation distinguishes it from fill weight, which is how much down the garment contains.

Patagonia’s undated product guidance, accessed in 2026, positions its 600- and 700-fill-power recycled-down garments generally for everyday use and its 800-fill-power garments for technical sports where weight and compressibility matter. That is Patagonia’s product-context guidance, not an industry-wide warmth scale. A jacket’s actual warmth also depends on fill amount and distribution, construction, fit, layers, activity, and conditions. REI notes that insulated jackets do not receive temperature ratings like sleeping bags, so do not treat fill power as a standalone temperature or warmth score.
Hybrid jackets and layering
Hybrid jackets combine down and synthetic insulation, often placing synthetic fill in areas more likely to get damp and down elsewhere. This can balance moisture tolerance, warmth, weight, and packability, but the result depends on the specific construction. Check the garment’s description to see where each fill is used rather than assuming all hybrids are alike.

Layering can make either choice more useful. In wet or windy conditions, a protective shell over down helps keep the insulation dry; a shell can also provide weather protection over synthetic insulation. Choose layers that suit the expected conditions and activity, and leave room to adjust before overheating.
Choose a jacket for your conditions
- Start with precipitation. For mostly dry cold, consider down. If dampness or wet-out is likely, lean toward synthetic or plan to protect down with a shell.
- Consider how you will move. For stationary or lower-sweat use, down can make efficient use of weight. For hard efforts or repeated bursts of activity in variable weather, synthetic or hybrid insulation is often more practical.
- Decide how much pack space matters. If compact packing is a priority, compare down jackets, but assess the whole garment and its fill weight as well as fill power.
- Compare the actual jacket, not just the fill label. Look at insulation amount and placement, construction, fit, and care instructions. There is no universal jacket temperature rating to substitute for those details.
- Set your budget and care expectations. Synthetic is often less expensive and may need more frequent washing, but costs and maintenance differ by model. Follow the garment maker’s care label.
What product examples can—and cannot—tell you
Patagonia describes its Down Sweater example as using 800-fill-power down for cold, dry conditions and as a little warmer than its Nano Puff. The brand says the Down Sweater’s water-repellent finish is intended for light precipitation and recommends synthetic insulation if wet-out is possible. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results.

Patagonia describes its Nano Puff example as using 60-gram PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco for variable conditions and says the synthetic fill maintains loft and warmth when wet. That specification and performance statement apply to this product example; they are not a universal statistic for synthetic jackets. See Patagonia’s comparison of the Down Sweater, Nano Puff, and Micro Puff for the brand’s descriptions.
