Double-Heptagon Fullerenes from Low-Pressure Combustion: What C70H6 Reveals

A 2022 Chemical Communications paper reported the isolation of C70H6, a hydrofullerene containing two heptagons, from low-pressure combustion soot. The molecule has the same nonclassical carbon cage previously observed in chlorinated C70 from carbon-arc soot, but hydrogenated C70H6 and chlorinated C70Cl6 are different compounds.

The result matters because the authors describe C70H6 as the first nonclassical fullerene isolable from both carbon-arc and combustion products. It links two synthesis environments without claiming that their reaction conditions, yields or mechanisms are identical.

What the 2022 study actually found

The molecule at the center of the report is C70H6, a hydrofullerene with a carbon cage containing two seven-membered rings, or heptagons. Researchers recovered it from soot generated by low-pressure combustion and characterized it unambiguously. The report appeared in Chemical Communications, volume 58, pages 9814–9817. It was submitted on 4 July 2022, accepted on 9 August 2022 and first published online on 9 August 2022 under DOI 10.1039/D2CC03707F.

Fullerenes are closed carbon cages built mainly from five- and six-membered rings. A cage made only from pentagons and hexagons is often called classical. Replacing that pattern with one or more heptagons creates a nonclassical fullerene: the extra-sided rings alter the curvature and topology of the cage. In this case, “double heptagon” means that two heptagonal rings are part of the C70 framework; it does not mean that the molecule contains two separate fullerene cages.

Why the heptagons are unusual

Carbon cages prefer arrangements that distribute curvature efficiently. Five-membered rings bend a graphene-like sheet into a closed shell, while six-membered rings preserve flatter regions. A seven-membered ring introduces curvature of the opposite sign and can force neighboring rings into a less familiar geometry. Such defects are common in broader carbon materials, but isolating a discrete molecule that retains them is much harder than observing a defect in a bulk soot particle.

The C70H6 structure is therefore more than a larger version of a familiar spherical fullerene. Its two heptagons define a specific nonclassical cage. The six hydrogen atoms terminate selected carbon atoms and make the species a hydrofullerene. Hydrogenation changes the molecule’s formula and electronic structure; it does not erase the underlying ring arrangement.

C70H6 and C70Cl6: same cage, different molecules

The 2022 paper compares its combustion product with dihept-C70Cl6, a chlorinated fullerene previously identified in carbon-arc products. The reported relationship is structural: the two derivatives share an identical heptagonal cage. They are not interchangeable substances.

Because the cage is shared, the two compounds can be compared as different chemical “dressings” of one carbon framework. That comparison should not be stretched into a claim that the compounds have the same reactivity, volatility, stability, biological behavior or potential use. The available report does not establish those properties.

How combustion enters the story

Low-pressure combustion creates a chemically complex environment in which carbon fragments, hydrogen-containing species and partially closed cages form in the gas phase and in soot. The C70H6 paper demonstrates that this environment can yield an isolable molecule with a nonclassical cage, but its abstract does not specify the fuel mixture, pressure profile, temperature history or residence time. Those details should not be borrowed from other combustion experiments.

The source material is described specifically as low-pressure combustion soot. “Soot” here is a mixture, not a pure form of C70H6. The target molecule must be separated from many other carbon-rich species before it can be identified as an individual fullerene. The paper’s claim concerns successful isolation and characterization of the compound, not a statement that the entire soot sample consists of that structure.

What earlier work says about combustion-derived heptagons

The C70 result belongs to a developing line of research. In a 2019 paper, researchers reported another hydrofullerene, C66H4, from low-pressure combustion of benzene, acetylene and oxygen. That recipe applies to the C66 study, not to the 2022 C70 experiment.

The C66H4 molecule was assigned C2v symmetry and contained two heptagons plus two pairs of fused pentagons. Four hydrogen atoms were attached at the common vertices of those fused pentagons. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was reported for that structure. The work appeared online on 18 March 2019 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society under DOI 10.1021/jacs.9b01638.

Computations in the C66 paper suggested that in situ hydrogenation could stabilize the unusual cage during combustion. “Suggested” is important: a density-functional-theory result is a mechanistic hypothesis supported by calculation, not experimental proof of every elementary step by which the molecule forms. The C70 report likewise establishes the isolated product and its cage identity without, in the supplied abstract, settling a complete formation pathway.

Carbon-arc precedents

Carbon arcs provide a different high-energy route to fullerene soot. A 2011 Nature Communications report described hepta-C68Cl6 and its extraction from soot followed by multistage high-performance liquid chromatography purification. That study is useful historical context: carbon-arc chemistry had already produced isolable chlorinated fullerenes containing heptagons before the combustion-derived C70 result.

The 2022 finding adds a specific bridge between the routes. The same double-heptagon carbon framework had appeared in a chlorinated derivative from an arc and was then found in a hydrogenated derivative from low-pressure combustion. The bridge is at the level of cage architecture, not a claim that the two reactors produce the same mixture or that one process simply reproduces the other.

How the compounds were identified

The C70 paper states that the hydrofullerene was unambiguously characterized. That wording means the authors considered the available analytical evidence sufficient to distinguish this molecular structure from other C70 isomers and derivatives. The abstract supplied for the report does not list enough experimental detail to reconstruct every instrument, separation step or crystallographic procedure, so those specifics should not be invented.

For comparison, the C66H4 study explicitly reports single-crystal X-ray diffraction, a direct way to determine the arrangement of atoms in a crystalline molecule. The existence of that method in the C66 paper does not prove that the 2022 C70 work used an identical workflow. Each paper’s characterization claims must be kept tied to its own compound.

What is established, and what remains open

Question What the reports establish What is not established by the supplied summaries
Is there a double-heptagon hydrofullerene? Yes. C70H6 was isolated from low-pressure combustion soot and reported as unambiguously characterized. A general inventory of all double-heptagon products made in combustion.
Is it the same compound as C70Cl6? No. The derivatives differ; the reported identity is a shared carbon cage. Equivalent physical or chemical properties.
Was the cage seen in another production route? Yes. The same heptagonal cage had been identified in chlorinated C70 from carbon-arc products. Equal yields, pressures, temperatures or selectivities between arc and combustion.
Is the formation mechanism known? The product and cage assignment are reported. A fully demonstrated sequence of carbon growth, hydrogen addition and cage closure for C70H6.
Does the finding imply a practical product? No practical application or commercial availability is reported. Manufacturing scale, price, performance or consumer uses.

Why finding the same cage in two environments matters

Nonclassical fullerene cages can be difficult to recognize because many carbon frameworks have similar formulas and overlapping analytical signals. Recovering the same heptagon-containing architecture from chemically different sources strengthens the case that the cage is a viable molecular structure rather than an artifact tied to one unusual preparation. It also suggests that more than one high-energy carbon-forming environment can reach the same low-energy or kinetically accessible framework, although that interpretation remains a research question rather than a proven universal rule.

The result also separates two ideas that are often conflated. First, combustion can generate complex carbon cages; this is a statement about an observed product. Second, combustion necessarily follows a particular “fullerene growth” mechanism; that would require direct mechanistic evidence. The 2022 report supports the first statement and does not, on its own, settle the second.

How to read the “first” claim

The authors describe C70H6 as the first nonclassical fullerene isolable from both carbon-arc and combustion products. The scope matters. It is a claim about an isolable nonclassical fullerene represented in both production contexts, not a claim that C70H6 was the first heptagon-containing carbon molecule ever made, the first fullerene found in soot, or the first molecule produced by combustion.

Earlier reports provide the necessary context: carbon-arc work had supplied heptagon-containing chlorofullerenes, and the 2019 combustion study had supplied C66H4. The novelty lies in the cross-route isolation of the particular C70 double-heptagon cage in hydrogenated form.

Key takeaways for readers

  • C70H6 is a hydrofullerene with two heptagons, isolated from low-pressure combustion soot.
  • Its cage is reported to match the cage of dihept-C70Cl6 previously found in carbon-arc products, while the hydrogenated and chlorinated compounds remain chemically distinct.
  • The 2022 authors frame the result as the first nonclassical fullerene isolable from both carbon-arc and combustion products.
  • C66H4, reported in 2019 from benzene–acetylene–oxygen combustion, is a separate molecule and experiment.
  • Computational suggestions about in situ hydrogenation help explain how an unusual cage might be stabilized, but they do not by themselves prove a complete combustion mechanism.
  • The available reports establish molecular structures and production contexts, not yields, commercial supply or practical applications.
