If Dorothy’s commission will not complete, check two separate gates: the dress must be fully constructed, and every line in the commission brief must be satisfied. In Dressed Down, the Finish Dress button appears only after every pattern piece is on the mannequin and every seam is sewn. A finished-looking dress can still fail because of quality, style, fabric-area, color-area, or accessory requirements. A failed Dressed Down delivery reopens that commission for another attempt instead of paying its rewards.
Start with the symptom you see
Use the symptom to identify which gate is blocking Dorothy’s commission. The game does not treat an unsewn seam, a missing accessory, and an unmet style score as the same problem.

How Dressmaker decides whether a dress is complete
Construction gate: pieces and seams
The structural check comes before the brief check. Dressmaker’s Dressed Down instructions state: “The Finish Dress button appears once every pattern piece is on the mannequin and every seam is sewn.” If the button is absent, do not spend time changing style traits yet. Rotate the mannequin and inspect the entire garment for a detached or unplaced piece, then inspect every seam for an unfinished stitch line.

Likewise, a dress can look assembled while one seam remains unsewn. The practical test is the button itself: its absence means construction is not recorded as complete.

Brief gate: the measured requirements
Once the dress is structurally finished, the requirement panel evaluates the commission. These lines can measure different things:
- Quality: a score affected by grain, fit, and stitching.
- Style traits: values such as Elegant, Eclectic, or Cool.
- Pattern or color traits: for example, Patterned or a named color.
- Fabric or color area: the proportion of the cut dress area, rather than the existence of a tiny decorative detail.
- Exact accessories: a required category and count, such as at least one Jewel and one Brooch.
Read each line independently. Satisfying four style traits does not compensate for missing quality, and owning an accessory does not count if it has not been placed on the dress.
Step-by-step fix for a commission that will not complete
- Open the requirement panel before submitting. Expand the active Dorothy commission and read every line, including the quality minimum, each style or pattern value, any named color or fabric, and accessory counts. Do not rely on how the dress looks in the preview.
- Confirm that the commission is the active one. Dorothy’s main commissions arrive in a fixed sequence. If another main commission is active, the next brief will not replace it. Finish or intentionally retry the active brief first.
- Resolve the construction gate. Put every pattern piece on the mannequin and sew every seam. If Finish Dress is still absent, continue inspecting attachment points and seam lines rather than changing the design.
- Raise quality separately. Check grain direction, refit pieces that sit poorly, and improve stitching. A visually attractive dress can remain below the quality threshold because quality is not the same measurement as style.
- Build enough area for named materials or colors. If the brief asks for Wool or Blue, spread that material or color over a meaningful portion of the cut dress area. A small edge, bow, or trim may be present but too small to move an area-based percentage.
- Place the exact accessory categories. For a Jewel or Brooch requirement, use those categories specifically and attach them to the dress. For the early Pigeon Adoption commission, a beaded trim can count as a Jewel, but it still must be placed on the garment.
- Recheck the panel after each alteration. Re-cutting, refitting, or replacing a panel can change both quality and area percentages. Verify the displayed values again before finishing.
- Submit only when the button and every line are satisfied. If Dressed Down fails, the commission is designed to reopen. Return to that same brief, correct the failed line, and deliver another dress.
Dressed Down: exact thresholds and how to meet them
Dressed Down is the commission most often associated with a dress that appears ready but will not settle. Its documented minimums are:

These are threshold checks, not suggestions. A score of 79 Quality or 39 in one style category is still a failed delivery. Because the values can change when panels are replaced, make the final check after the last seam is sewn.

Understanding the requirement types
Quality is not a style score
Quality depends on technical execution: grain, fit, and stitching are the documented factors. A dress may have the requested Elegant, Eclectic, Cool, and Patterned values and still fail because its Quality is under 80. Treat quality as its own work pass. Straighten grain, correct poor fit, and resew weak seams before changing decorative traits.
Style and pattern values are independent lines
Each named trait is evaluated separately. Increasing Eclectic does not automatically raise Cool, and meeting Patterned does not prove that Elegant has reached its minimum. Keep the requirement panel open while adjusting the design so you can see which line changed.
Area-based fabric and color checks
Some requirements measure coverage across the cut dress area. The companion guides describe Wool and Blue checks this way. A tiny collar, cuff, or trim can be technically present without covering enough area to satisfy the percentage. If the value does not move, enlarge the required material or color across substantial panels rather than stacking more narrow decorations.

An exact accessory requirement is a category-and-placement test. Having a Brooch in storage is not enough; attach it to the dress. Likewise, use a Jewel when the brief says Jewel instead of assuming that any ornament will substitute. On Pigeon Adoption, a beaded trim is documented as a valid Jewel, provided it is actually placed on the garment.

Pigeon Adoption: the early Dorothy brief with item requirements
Dorothy’s first story commission is Pigeon Adoption. The listed requirements are Quality 75, Warm 50, Eclectic 50, at least one Jewel, and at least one Brooch.

Check this brief line by line before finishing. The Jewel and Brooch counts are explicit item requirements, unlike an area-based color requirement.
Why Dorothy’s next commission is not appearing

Dorothy’s commissions do not appear as an unrestricted list. The documented completion checklist gives this order:

The next unfinished main commission appears when no main commission is active. A later brief therefore remains blocked if an earlier one is failed, left active, or not yet delivered successfully. “Missing” quest progress often means the prerequisite has not settled rather than that the next brief failed to load.

How many Dorothy commissions exist
The Dressmaker Wiki’s 2026 search-accessed page lists five story commissions, two pigeon commissions, and one gift commission for Dorothy. The companion page summarizes eight commissions across five relationship levels and twelve pattern unlocks. These totals describe the documented progression set; they do not mean every commission is available simultaneously.
Build and date context
The Dressmaker Guide records game build 410.44874e6 and identifies Pigeon Adoption as position 10 of 53 in the main campaign. That guide was checked on 27 September 2026. If your menus or requirement behavior differ, record your own build number before treating the difference as a bug.

A successful commission grants +1 friendship. A commission that falls short grants +0.25 friendship, according to the 2026 search-accessed Dressmaker Wiki page. Dressed Down has an additional behavior: a failed dress reopens the same commission, and its rewards are not awarded until a successful dress is delivered.

Do not interpret the reopened brief as a duplicate quest or a lost save. It is the retry state for that commission. Correct the specific unmet line, reconstruct anything that was changed, and submit again. Friendship stars unlock patterns; the character screen is the reliable place to read the resulting relationship level.
A reliable pre-submission workflow
Use this sequence whenever you are about to deliver a Dorothy dress:
- Brief: read every displayed line and note the exact minimums.
- Construction: verify that every piece is attached and every seam is sewn; confirm that Finish Dress is available.
- Technical quality: inspect grain, fit, and stitching independently of the style values.
- Coverage: make named fabrics and colors occupy enough cut-area surface for area-based checks.
- Accessories: count the exact categories and confirm they are attached to the dress.
- Final reread: check the panel after the last alteration, because replacing a piece can change several values.
- Delivery: submit only after all lines pass; if Dressed Down reopens, use the same checklist for the retry.
This order prevents wasted redesigns. There is no benefit to tuning Elegant or Cool while the game still lacks a pattern piece or an unsewn seam, and there is no benefit to adding trim when the actual failure is Quality.
When it may be a version-specific issue
The documented rules explain the normal completion and progression checks, but they do not establish a universal software bug. If every piece and seam is complete, the Finish Dress button is present, every requirement line is met, the correct commission is active, and the expected retry or progression still does not occur, capture the game build number and the exact commission state. Report it as a version-specific issue rather than assuming that a hidden item is missing.
Include the commission name, the displayed requirement values, whether the button appeared, whether the dress was a first attempt or retry, and the build number. That information distinguishes a genuine progression defect from a threshold or prerequisite that was overlooked.
