Donut Lab says its largest listed in-wheel motor can deliver up to 630 kW and 4,300 Nm while weighing about 40 kg. Those are manufacturer-published, “up to” specifications; the available material does not independently verify the figures or establish that the motor is in a mass-produced passenger EV.
What Donut Lab actually makes
Donut Lab develops modular electric motors and a broader platform that can include inverters, batteries, software and vehicle-development support. Its flagship Donut Motor places the drive unit at the wheel, allowing torque to be sent directly to that wheel instead of through a conventional central motor, reduction gearset, differential and half-shafts. The company lists applications ranging from cars and motorcycles to trucks, trailers, drones and construction vehicles. See Donut Lab’s company description.

The motor family was announced on February 26, 2025. Donut Lab says its technology has been used in Verge motorcycles, with customer deliveries beginning in early 2023, and presents WATT Electric Vehicle Company and Longbow Motors as development partners. Partnership announcements show a route toward commercialization, but they are not the same as a consumer car being available for purchase.
Donut Lab’s published motor specifications
The following figures come from Donut Lab’s product page and should be read as company claims. The page uses “up to” language and does not specify a single continuous-duty test protocol for every model.

Donut Lab does not, in the available specifications, state the voltage, inverter-current limit, cooling conditions, ambient temperature, duty cycle, tire diameter or whether each headline rating is peak or continuous. The 630-kW and 4,300-Nm numbers therefore should not be treated as guaranteed output during sustained road use.
How an in-wheel motor works
Most EVs mount one or more motors near the center of the chassis. Gears reduce motor speed and multiply torque, then differentials, transaxles and half-shafts deliver that torque to the tires. An in-wheel, hub or wheel-end motor moves the drive unit into or immediately around the wheel. Separate motors can then be controlled independently at each corner.
The terminology matters: a motor mounted near a wheel with a reduction gear is not identical to a direct-drive motor contained in the wheel assembly. Hyundai and Kia’s Uni Wheel, for example, relocates gearing near the wheel while retaining a compact motor architecture; it is an alternative, not the same design as Donut Lab’s direct-drive approach.

Why 4,300 Nm sounds extraordinary
Torque, measured in newton-metres, is twisting force. Power, measured in kilowatts, is the rate at which work is done. A central EV motor may have a relatively modest shaft-torque figure that is multiplied by reduction gearing before reaching the tire. Donut Lab presents torque at the wheel motor, so comparing its number directly with an un-geared motor-shaft figure can exaggerate the apparent difference.

What the vehicle can use is limited by the tire–road contact patch, vehicle mass, battery and inverter current, software and thermal capacity. If the tire cannot transmit the requested force, extra torque produces wheelspin rather than acceleration. Four motors also do not automatically deliver four times the usable acceleration: traction control may reduce output, and the battery may be unable to supply every motor’s peak demand simultaneously. A 0–60-mph prediction would require complete vehicle specifications and an independent test.
What direct drive could improve
More freedom in vehicle packaging
Removing central transmission hardware can free space for batteries, cargo, passenger room or a flatter floor. Donut Lab promotes reduced onboard powertrain packaging, while Hyundai and Kia describe similar design opportunities for their wheel-adjacent architecture. These are potential benefits that depend on the complete suspension, battery and crash structure.
Independent wheel control
Each wheel can receive its own torque command. That can support traction control, torque vectoring, yaw management, corner-exit acceleration and low-grip operation. Elaphe, a separate supplier, claims wheel-control response in 4 milliseconds; that figure belongs to Elaphe’s system and should not be attributed to Donut Lab.
Fewer conventional transmission parts
A direct-drive layout can remove or reduce driveshafts, differentials, reduction gears, transaxles and half-shafts. It still needs inverters, high-voltage wiring, battery-management electronics, bearings, wheel-end structures, suspension links, brakes, cooling and control software. “Eliminates the drivetrain” is therefore inaccurate; it eliminates many conventional power-transmission components.

- Sturdy Construction: The electric motor features a durable aluminum body and high-purity copper windings, ensuring low heat generation and increased torque for improved performance.
- Smooth Operation:The double ball bearing design increases axial load capacity, reduces friction, and features strong oil sealing, resulting in quieter operation.
Potential performance and platform flexibility
High torque density may suit lightweight vehicles, where strong wheel torque can be useful without a large central e-axle. Donut Lab cites a lightweight WATT EV platform and a Longbow electric sports-car program as examples, but neither citation establishes a retail production car using the 21-inch motor.
The engineering penalties that headlines often omit
Unsprung mass
A wheel motor moves with the suspension. Extra unsprung mass can make the tire follow rough pavement less effectively, reduce ride comfort, increase suspension and bearing loads, and require more demanding spring and damper tuning. Donut Lab argues that its power and torque density reduce this penalty; that is a company position, not proof that the penalty disappears in a finished vehicle.
Shock, water and corrosion exposure
Wheel-end hardware faces potholes, curb strikes, vibration, water, salt and dirt. A production system must demonstrate sealing, impact resistance, bearing life, corrosion protection and thermal-cycle durability over years of road use. A static display or dyno run cannot establish those results.

Cooling at sustained load
Hundreds of kilowatts create substantial heat. A serious evaluation needs peak and continuous ratings, cooling medium, wheel-end heat rejection, and results during repeated acceleration, towing, hill climbing or track use—especially at low vehicle speed when airflow is limited. Donut Lab’s public page does not provide a complete standardized continuous-duty profile for the headline motor.

Brakes, steering and wheel packaging
The motor must share limited space with friction brakes, brake cooling, wheel bearings, steering knuckles, suspension links and the tire. Elaphe’s Sonic X material highlights compatibility with large performance brakes, illustrating why brake integration is a central design task. Wheel size also matters: Donut Lab’s 21-inch specification assumes a suitable wheel and brake package.
Battery, inverter and service demands
A high-output motor needs an appropriately high-voltage battery, inverter, cables and thermal system. A damaged wheel motor may also be more expensive or complex to service than a central drive unit, and the complete vehicle—not just the motor—must satisfy crash, durability and homologation requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How far along is the technology?
Donut Lab presents its motors as production-oriented products and says the 17-inch open motor has been used in Verge motorcycles in continuous production, with customer deliveries starting in early 2023. It announced a partnership with WATT Electric Vehicle Company for the PACES lightweight EV platform on December 16, 2025; the announcement describes two rear direct-drive motors initially and a four-wheel-drive version planned later in 2026. Longbow Motors is described as developing a lightweight sports car with the 17-inch enclosed motor.
Those examples represent different stages: existing motorcycle use, partner development and future plans. The available material does not establish that the 21-inch, 630-kW motor is homologated or mass-produced in a passenger car. A supplier’s “production” language should not be read as proof that consumers can buy a Donut-powered car today.

Donut Lab compared with other wheel-motor approaches
| Company or system | Published information | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Donut Lab | 21-inch motor listed at up to 630 kW, 4,300 Nm and 40 kg; 17-inch versions at up to 150 kW and 1,200 Nm | Direct-drive motor family and broader supplier platform |
| Elaphe L1500 | Up to 1,500 Nm per motor, more than 110 kW, for wheels of at least 19 inches | Established in-wheel specialist; see L1500 specifications |
| Elaphe Sonic X | Claims up to 300 kW per wheel; 21-inch front-wheel version listed at 300 kW peak and 200 kW continuous | Competing high-performance platform; samples planned for automakers in the first quarter of 2026 |
| Protean Electric | Technology for OEM vehicles; Renault 5 Turbo 3E application announced at 555 hp | Useful production benchmark because Renault program is publicly tied to passenger-car manufacturing |
| Nidec | 2019 prototype above 100 kW, 32 kg, fitting within a 20-inch wheel | Prototype announcement; later mass production of that specific program is not established here |
| Hyundai/Kia Uni Wheel | Wheel-area reduction gearing with a compact motor near each wheel | Wheel-adjacent geared architecture, not pure direct drive |
Protean says its system is expected to make the Renault 5 Turbo 3E the first European passenger car to enter production with in-wheel motors. That is a stronger public commercialization reference than a development partnership, but it does not validate Donut Lab’s specifications.
What evidence would confirm the headline claims?
- Independent dyno reports showing both peak and continuous torque and power.
- Test conditions: voltage, current, cooling, ambient temperature, duty cycle and wheel size.
- Complete wheel-end mass, including brakes, bearings and mounting hardware—not motor mass alone.
- Vehicle-level acceleration, efficiency, regenerative-braking and tire-limited traction data.
- Durability results for pothole impacts, water, salt, dust, vibration, thermal cycling and wheel-bearing life.
- Evidence of homologation, volume manufacturing, warranty support and service procedures.
Can you buy a Donut-powered EV?
There is no evidence in the cited material of a retail passenger car that buyers can order today with the 21-inch motor. Donut Lab’s model is primarily B2B: OEMs and vehicle developers contact the company for integration. Consumers can purchase a finished Verge motorcycle through Verge Motorcycles, but that is different from buying a standalone motor or installing one as a bolt-on upgrade. A conversion would require high-voltage engineering, redesigned suspension and brakes, structural work, software integration and regulatory approval.
Bottom line
Donut Lab’s 4,300-Nm, 630-kW figure is a striking high-end specification for a 21-inch direct-drive wheel motor, and the company’s modular approach could enable new packaging and torque-control options. It remains a manufacturer claim without a fully disclosed standardized test profile. The practical question is not whether one motor can produce an enormous number, but whether a complete vehicle can turn that output into tire-limited acceleration, reliable cooling, acceptable ride quality, durable wheel-end hardware and a certified production product.
