Vitalik Buterin is urging crypto holders not to rush into new wallets, even as Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake warns that AI-assisted mathematical advances could eventually threaten wallet cryptography. Drake’s proposed “months, not years” timeline is a worst-case warning, not a demonstrated attack deadline. For holders, the immediate concern is that a hurried or misconfigured transfer can cause losses of its own.
What Buterin said—and why
On October 7, 2026, Drake called for the crypto industry to plan calmly for “bunker mode.” He argued that AI-assisted advances in mathematics could threaten ECDSA, the elliptic-curve signature scheme used in cryptocurrency systems, before quantum computers become a factor. In his worst-case scenario, a break could come within months rather than years. Drake proposed a controlled migration to fresh addresses whose public keys have not been exposed onchain, with sophisticated, large holders moving first. This is his warning and proposal, not an established capability or consensus forecast.

Buterin’s response was not to dismiss AI-related risk. He said the industry should take it seriously, but holders should not scramble to move funds. As The Block quoted him: “I don’t recommend anyone scramble to move their funds to new wallets today.” He added that keeping assets at an address that has never signed a transaction can be a good precaution if moving is easy. His qualification matters: he also warned, “It’s very easy to lose funds from a misconfigured rushed upgrade, so … don’t rush anything.” The Block reported his remarks on October 8, 2026.

The reports do not establish that AI can currently crack Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet keys. CoinDesk said no practical attack on those wallet keys had been demonstrated in its October 8, 2026 report. Drake’s accelerated timeline is a possible worst case, not evidence that a break is underway or a date by which one should expect it. There is also no settled industry view that the underlying assumptions have weakened. The Block reported that Coinbase head of cryptography Yehuda Lindell said there was “no evidence whatsoever” they had, while Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi described Drake’s warning as “a very sober call.” Those are attributed assessments, not proof that a break is either imminent or impossible. Why an unused address enters the discussion
A wallet address that has never signed a transaction has not exposed its public key onchain in the way an address used to sign has. The reports describe using such a fresh address as a way to reduce public-key exposure. That is a limited precaution, not a guarantee of safety and not a reason by itself to transfer assets.

Moving funds still requires a transaction and correct configuration. If a transfer or wallet upgrade is hurried or misconfigured, the move can create a direct loss risk before any hypothetical cryptographic break occurs. A hardware wallet or other device does not, by itself, resolve the cryptographic concern described in these reports.

Buterin’s warning goes beyond elliptic curves
The discussion is not limited to ECDSA and elliptic-curve cryptography. Buterin also raised concerns about how AI-assisted mathematical progress could affect lattice-based cryptography, including ML-DSA and fully homomorphic encryption. He favored conservative lattice parameters and hash-based constructions where possible. That broadens the set of systems the industry should consider; it does not mean those systems have been broken.

Should you move your crypto to a new wallet?
These reports do not support a universal instruction to move—or not move—funds. Buterin’s position was conditional: an unused address may be a good precaution when moving is easy, while a rushed migration can introduce substantial loss risk. The relevant considerations are whether a move can be made safely, the exposure of the address’s public key, and the uncertainty around both the likelihood and timing of a practical cryptographic break.
Drake’s recommendation was to set a controlled migration in motion, not to trigger panic transfers. As Cointelegraph quoted him, “My personal recommendation is to set in motion a controlled mass migration of assets to fresh addresses.” The distinction is central: planning for a possible future threat is not the same as scrambling to transfer assets today.
