There is no published end date or duration forecast for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Its current U.S. page says one in six children under five receive its monthly books; the often-quoted one-in-seven figure is a 2024 milestone. Whether a local program can keep serving families depends in part on funding secured by its community partners.
Does the program still reach one in seven U.S. children under five?
That was the program’s stated U.S. reach in 2024: one in seven children under five, or 14 percent. The current U.S. page instead advertises one in six. It does not publish the measurement date, denominator, or calculation behind that newer figure, so the two figures should be treated as claims from different points in time—not as a directly comparable count series.

The Imagination Library mails a free, age-appropriate book each month to registered children from birth until age five. Its U.S. reach figure is not the same as the number of children enrolled worldwide.

Continuity is partly local. Community partners enroll children in their service areas and secure funding for books and shipping. The central organization provides program infrastructure, manages the central ordering system, selects books and coordinates wholesale purchasing, handles administrative costs, and coordinates monthly mailings. National reach does not by itself guarantee that every local area can keep enrolling children or mailing books without interruption.
What determines whether a local program can keep mailing books?
The official U.S. guidance says a new community needs sustainable financial support for wholesale book and mailing costs, along with a nonprofit partner to qualify for special nonprofit mailing rates. For a family asking about its own area, the most useful question is therefore local: does the partner have funding secured for future service?

To assess continuity, ask the local program partner:
Recommended Free Tools
- Which sources fund books and postage, and how much of those costs are covered?
- How many future months or years of funding are committed?
- Does the partner have a reserve or a plan to replace funding if a source ends?
- Is enrollment currently open, or has registration paused?
These are practical questions based on the partners’ stated funding role; the official materials do not publish a single nationwide figure for local partners’ future commitments or reserves. Virginia’s 2025 annual-report listing identifies categories such as appropriations, expenditures, participating local programs, registered children, and books sent, but the listing itself does not provide those figures.

How large is the program globally?
In a June 29, 2026 update, the organization reported mailing more than 3.5 million books each month and having gifted more than 325 million books cumulatively across five countries. Those are worldwide totals, not U.S. enrollment numbers, and they do not establish how long the program will continue in any particular community.

A March 25, 2026 official update summarized an international study led by Dr. Claire Galea. It said more than 86,000 caregivers across five countries were followed over twelve months, comparing families in the program with families not yet receiving books. According to the update, after receiving ten books, participating children were significantly more likely to show stronger early literacy skills, including vocabulary development and phonological awareness. The update also described more regular shared reading and caregiver-child interaction among enrolled families.
