Zelle does not accept a particular debit, credit, or prepaid card as the basis for sending or receiving money. Instead, you use an eligible checking or savings account at a participating U.S. bank or credit union. The financial institution decides which of its accounts qualify.
What you need to use Zelle
- An eligible checking or savings account at a participating U.S. bank or credit union.
- An email address or U.S. mobile number to enroll through your institution.
- Access to the institution’s mobile banking app or online banking. Zelle says a separate Zelle account or app is not required. Zelle’s enrollment guide states, “You don’t need to create a separate Zelle account.”
Your bank or credit union sets account eligibility and may apply its own verification steps, enrollment timing, terms, and transaction limits. Check with the institution if you are unsure whether a particular account qualifies.

Why a card number won’t tell you whether you qualify
Zelle’s published instructions describe eligibility in terms of the underlying bank account, not a Visa or Mastercard number or whether a card is debit, credit, or prepaid. A bank debit card may help you contact your institution—the Zelle support guidance says to call the number on the back of your debit card for bank-app issues—but that is not a Zelle payment-card requirement. Zelle’s FAQ explains its account-based enrollment.
How to check whether your bank account is eligible
- Check whether your bank or credit union participates using Zelle’s Get Started page. Zelle says its service is available through more than 2,400 banking and credit union apps.
- Open the institution’s official mobile app or online banking and look for Zelle.
- Enroll with an email address or U.S. mobile number, then select the checking or savings account you want to use.
- If the account is rejected or the enrollment process is unclear, contact the institution. It controls account eligibility and can confirm its own requirements.
Phone numbers, international use, fees, and payments
Enrollment phone numbers
An international number or landline cannot be used as the U.S. mobile number for Zelle enrollment. If your email address or mobile number is already enrolled elsewhere, you may need to move it or re-enroll through your current institution. See Zelle’s enrollment FAQ.

Sending money internationally
Zelle says both parties need U.S. bank accounts, including when the people are using the service from abroad. Check Zelle’s international-use guidance and your institution’s terms before sending.
Fees
Zelle says fees are typically absent, but advises users to check with their financial institution. Its support page reports that 99.40% of consumer savings and checking accounts linked to Zelle did not charge a fee to send, receive, or request money, based on a Q1 2026 survey of financial institutions offering Zelle. That is Zelle’s reported survey result, not an independently verified market-wide statistic. See Zelle’s fee information.

Canceling a payment
A payment to a recipient who is already enrolled goes to that person’s bank account and cannot be canceled. Zelle says cancellation is possible only before the recipient enrolls. Confirm the recipient’s details before sending. Zelle’s payment guidance explains when cancellation is available.
