Yes, Xbox Game Bar recording can reduce game performance, but there is no reliable, universal FPS penalty. Capturing a clip consumes system resources, and the size of any change depends on the game, your PC, the capture mode and the workload at that moment. Background recording and a clip started with Win + Alt + R are different conditions, so test them separately on your own system rather than relying on a percentage from another PC or another recorder.
What “reduced performance” means in practice
Players usually notice one of three changes when capture is active:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Lower average FPS: the game renders fewer frames over the same period.
- Less consistent frame times: the average may look similar, but occasional long frames create hitching or stutter.
- Less headroom for other work: a game that was already close to saturating the CPU, GPU or storage system has fewer resources available for recording.
Microsoft states that running an application while gaming uses system resources. That establishes why an effect is possible, not how large a recording penalty must be. The company’s wording appears in its Game Assist FAQ, which discusses the Game Assist widget rather than a measured Xbox Game Bar recording benchmark.
“Running any application on your computer while gaming will have some impact on system resource usage, but we’ve optimized the experience as much as possible to be more performant than switching to a browser on your desktop.”

That sentence should not be converted into an FPS guarantee. It does not report a frame-rate test, identify a particular game, or quantify recording overhead.
Background recording and manual clips are not the same test
Xbox Game Bar supports a clip started on demand and a Windows background-capture mode. Mixing the two can make a troubleshooting result misleading: a PC may handle a short, manually triggered clip but behave differently when it is continuously retaining recent gameplay.
| Condition | How it operates | What to measure | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture off | No Game Bar recording during the test scene. | Baseline average FPS and frame-time consistency. | Your control run; repeat it to account for normal game variation. |
| Background recording on | Windows continuously maintains recent gameplay so a previous moment can be saved. | Compare with the same scene and settings while this mode is enabled. | MSI troubleshooting guidance lists Windows background recording, also called Xbox Game DVR, as a setting to consider when addressing poor performance. It gives no universal FPS figure: MSI FAQ No. 2424 (revision 1.5, February 18, 2022). |
| Manual clip | Press Win + Alt + R to start and stop a clip. | Compare the active-recording interval with the same scene when capture is off. | Microsoft documents this shortcut for Windows 10 and Windows 11; its instructions do not publish a performance percentage: Microsoft recording instructions. |
The most useful question is therefore not “What percentage does Game Bar always cost?” but “What changes on my PC in each capture mode?”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
There is no established universal Xbox Game Bar number
The documented material does not provide a repeatable, cross-game benchmark such as “recording always lowers FPS by five percent.” Game engines, graphics settings, processor and graphics-card load, capture configuration and background software all differ. A result measured on one setup cannot be promoted to a rule for every Windows computer.

Vendor troubleshooting makes background capture worth checking
MSI’s FAQ No. 2424, revision 1.5 dated February 18, 2022, includes Windows background recording (Xbox Game DVR) among settings to examine when troubleshooting low game performance. The guidance is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a laboratory measurement, and it does not say that disabling the setting will produce a particular gain.
Results from another recorder cannot quantify Game Bar
TechSpot reported a slight performance reduction in its testing of recording with the Nvidia App: TechSpot’s report. That test concerns a different recorder and cannot be used as an Xbox Game Bar result. It is useful only as a reminder that capture software can have overhead; it supplies no Game Bar percentage.
How to measure the effect on your own PC
A controlled comparison is stronger than a single observation. Use a scene you can reproduce—such as the same save point, race, replay or benchmark loop—and change one capture condition at a time.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the test scene. Keep the game’s resolution, graphics options, frame-rate cap, power mode and other running software unchanged. Record the scene and the settings so each run is comparable.
- Run the baseline. With Game Bar capture off, play the scene for the same duration each time. Record average FPS and, if your counter provides it, frame-time consistency. Repeat the baseline so a random spike or unusually quiet moment does not define the result.
- Test background recording separately. Enable the Windows background-recording setting if that is the mode you use, then repeat the identical scene and duration. Do not start a manual clip during this run.
- Test a manually started clip. Turn background recording off, repeat the scene, and start a clip with Win + Alt + R. Stop it with the same shortcut after the planned interval.
- Keep a simple log. Note the capture condition, average FPS, any obvious stutter and the frame-time result for every run. Run each condition more than once; a single pass is weak evidence because normal game behavior can hide a small change.
- Compare like with like. If background capture is slower but a manually started clip matches the baseline, the mode—not a generic “Game Bar” label—is the variable associated with your result. If both recording tests differ from the baseline, note the size and consistency of the change rather than applying it to other games.
This procedure is a way for you to characterize your computer; it is not a benchmark performed by Microsoft, MSI or this article.

How to start a known manual recording
Microsoft’s accessibility instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and provide a consistent way to identify the manual-clip condition:
- Open Xbox Game Bar while the game is running with Win + G. If Windows has Game Bar disabled, enable it in the Xbox Game Bar settings before testing.
- Press Win + Alt + R to begin recording. Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- Use Win + Alt + M to toggle microphone capture when you need to test clips with or without your voice.
- Find the resulting MP4 in the default
VideosCapturesfolder. Checking that a file was created confirms that you tested an actual recording rather than only opening the overlay.
Keep the microphone state and any other capture option the same between runs if you are trying to isolate recording overhead. The shortcut and default save location are documented by Microsoft.
Interpreting your measurements
Average FPS changes
An average-FPS difference that appears in repeated, matched runs is evidence about your setup, not a universal property of Xbox Game Bar. Describe the condition precisely: for example, “background recording was enabled” or “a manual clip was active,” along with the game and settings used.
Frame-time consistency
Two runs can have similar averages while feeling different if one contains more long frames. Look for repeatable hitching or a less consistent frame-time trace during recording. If the effect appears only once, repeat the scene before blaming capture; loading, AI behavior and ordinary game variability can create isolated spikes.

Small differences near the noise floor
When runs overlap within normal variation, the responsible conclusion is that your test did not establish a meaningful change under those conditions. It is more accurate than declaring that recording has zero impact, because a different game or heavier workload may behave differently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if recording causes a problem
If background recording is the only condition that changes performance
Disable background recording and use a manual clip when you only need to save an event after it happens. This removes the continuously active condition from your test. Re-run the same scene after changing the setting so you know whether the improvement is repeatable.
If manually started clips also change performance
Confirm the result with repeated baseline and recording runs. Check that you did not change resolution, graphics quality, frame-rate limits, power mode or other software between runs. If the difference remains, you have evidence that your current workload has little spare capacity for capture; decide whether the resulting FPS or frame-time behavior is acceptable for the game you are playing.

- Use the same route, camera position or benchmark segment each time.
- Start and stop the clip at the same points.
- Change one capture setting at a time instead of toggling background recording and manual capture together.
- Repeat enough runs to separate a recurring pattern from a one-off hitch.

Other Windows recording choices
Microsoft’s Steps Recorder migration guidance lists Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar and Clipchamp as screen-recording options: Microsoft’s Steps Recorder deprecation page. That page is a list of available tools, not a gaming-performance comparison. It does not establish that Snipping Tool or Clipchamp is faster than Game Bar, and the evidence here does not justify ranking recorders by FPS impact.
If you switch tools, repeat the same controlled comparison. Keep the game scene and graphics settings fixed, identify whether the new tool records continuously or only after you press a button, and record both average FPS and frame-time consistency. A different application’s result still cannot be presented as a Game Bar measurement.
Bottom line for players
Xbox Game Bar can reduce FPS or make frame delivery less consistent while it records because capture uses system resources. The size of the effect is workload- and configuration-dependent, and the available evidence does not establish a universal percentage. Test capture off, background recording on, and a manually started clip as separate conditions. Microsoft supports manual recording with Win + Alt + R on Windows 10 and 11, with files saved by default to VideosCaptures. If your measurements show a problem, disabling background capture and using manual clips is the first targeted change to evaluate; if manual recording still hurts performance, decide from repeated, same-scene measurements whether the trade-off is acceptable for that game.
