Wi-Fi Calling can let a supported phone make and receive regular calls when cellular coverage is weak or unavailable, provided the phone has a working Wi-Fi connection with internet access. Your carrier and device must support the feature, and it may need to be turned on first.
How Wi-Fi Calling works—and what it cannot fix
With Wi-Fi Calling, your phone uses a Wi-Fi access point and its internet connection to reach your carrier’s mobile network. The router does not place the call on its own; it supplies the internet path to the carrier. The FCC describes the feature as useful where cellular coverage is weak or absent, as long as the device can connect to Wi-Fi (FCC report, 2021).
That makes it useful in a cellular dead zone inside a home or building. It will not solve a Wi-Fi dead zone, an internet outage, a disabled feature, or a carrier-and-phone combination that does not support Wi-Fi Calling. Some public or workplace Wi-Fi networks may block the service or otherwise fail to work with it; Apple notes that not all Wi-Fi networks support Wi-Fi Calling (Apple Support).
Check support and turn it on
Availability depends on the carrier, device, and sometimes the account. Check with your carrier for your exact phone and plan if the feature is missing or you are unsure whether it is available where you use the phone. Menu names can vary by model, carrier, and software version.

On iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- If your iPhone uses multiple SIMs, select the line you want to set up.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- If prompted, enter or confirm the emergency address associated with the line.
Apple says “Wi-Fi” appears in the status bar when Wi-Fi Calling is available; on current iPhones, check the status display in Control Center (Apple’s setup and status guidance).
On Android
For supported Android devices, Google documents this path: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > [carrier SIM] > Wi-Fi calling. The exact labels can differ, and the option may be absent when the carrier does not support the feature. Google Fi customers can enable it in the Fi app’s profile or settings area. Know whether a call is using Wi-Fi
Look for your phone’s Wi-Fi Calling status indicator rather than assuming a call has switched to Wi-Fi just because cellular reception is poor. Indicator wording and location vary by device. When both networks are available, routing and handoff behavior depend on the carrier and phone: Google Fi says it selects the network it considers best and switches to cellular if Wi-Fi weakens or drops, while Apple documents a switch to cellular using VoLTE when Wi-Fi is lost and VoLTE is available and enabled. Those examples do not establish how every carrier handles handoffs (Google Fi; Apple Support).
If Wi-Fi Calling does not work
- Confirm support and activation. Check that your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling on your particular phone and that the feature is enabled for the correct SIM or line.
- Restart the phone. This can help after activation or a settings change; Google notes that reactivation may require a restart or carrier assistance (Google Phone app Help).
- Try another Wi-Fi network. A network may block or fail to support Wi-Fi Calling. If it works elsewhere, the problem may be the original network rather than the phone’s cellular signal.
- Ask your carrier to check the line. If the setting is missing or calls still fail, the carrier can confirm eligibility and whether the service is provisioned correctly.
If the Wi-Fi signal itself is weak in the room where you need to call, improving Wi-Fi coverage—for example, with a mesh system—may help the phone connect more reliably to the network. A mesh system only extends Wi-Fi coverage; it cannot provide internet service, make an unsupported phone eligible, or guarantee a successful call.

Do not rely on Wi-Fi Calling as an emergency-call guarantee
Emergency-call routing and location handling vary by provider. Apple says an iPhone will use cellular for an emergency call when cellular service is available; if cellular is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, the call may use Wi-Fi. Apple also says the phone may use its location and may ask you to confirm an emergency address (Apple Support). AT&T likewise says a 911 call goes over cellular if possible and that device location data is used when cellular is unavailable (AT&T support).
Google Fi warns that a 911 call over Wi-Fi or data may fail to reach local emergency operators or may connect to an administrative office that is not staffed after hours or by trained 911 operators. Location information or a callback number may also be unavailable in some cases (Google Fi emergency-call guidance). Keep the emergency address on your account accurate and read your provider’s instructions. The FCC has also discussed unresolved Wi-Fi 911 challenges involving routing and location in a recent filing (FCC-CIRC2609-04).

Do not place a casual test call to 911. If you need to test emergency-call procedures, 911.gov advises contacting your local 911 center’s non-emergency number to arrange a test (911.gov FAQ).
