What United’s Starlink Wi‑Fi is designed to do
United describes Starlink broadband as capable of supporting “streaming, online gaming, video calls and more.” In its January 5, 2025 announcement, the airline also said Starlink access would include streaming services for MileagePlus customers.

United’s October 14, 2025 mainline launch release gave a more specific description of the onboard experience. It said passengers could watch live streams and personal streaming services, collaborate on files in real time and connect multiple devices at once. The same release claimed that movies and shows could be watched without buffering or lag on Starlink-equipped aircraft. That is United’s product claim, not a promise that every flight will deliver identical performance.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: if your aircraft is equipped and the connection has sufficient capacity, streaming and ordinary cloud work are intended uses. A congested flight, a brief satellite-to-aircraft interruption or traffic-management rules can still affect speed and continuity.

Can you watch Netflix and other streaming services?
Streaming is an intended use
United explicitly markets Starlink for personal streaming and live content. A passenger may be able to watch an on-demand movie, follow a live sports event or stream another service during the flight. Multiple connected devices are also part of United’s stated launch experience, so a phone, tablet and laptop can potentially use the connection at the same time.
Bandwidth throttling can still change the result
United’s Wi‑Fi terms qualify that promise. They state: “Downloading of large amounts of data or content or streaming video content by any user may be throttled based on available bandwidth.” Throttling means the network can deliberately reduce the rate available to a user when capacity is tight. A service may begin smoothly and then load more slowly as more passengers connect or as demand rises.
Because the terms do not set a guaranteed resolution, bitrate or minimum speed, do not treat “Starlink-equipped” as a guarantee of uninterrupted high-definition playback. United’s “without buffering or lag” wording describes the experience the airline expects to provide, while the terms preserve the ability to manage traffic.
How to make streaming more resilient
- Download a backup film, episode or playlist before boarding; onboard streaming is a capability, not a substitute for an offline copy.
- Use one active high-bandwidth stream when possible. Pause cloud-photo synchronization, system updates and large file transfers that compete with playback.
- If a live stream stalls, wait briefly before repeatedly refreshing. Repeated reloads can consume additional data without improving a congested connection.
- Have a lower-resolution option available. Adaptive playback can reduce interruptions when the network is being throttled.
Will a VPN work on United’s Starlink Wi‑Fi?
Connection is possible, but continuity is not assured
United does not promise uninterrupted VPN service. Its Wi‑Fi terms say: “VPN access may be intermittent and require multiple log ins, depending on the VPN provider, due to very brief losses in connectivity.” A VPN can therefore connect successfully and still need to reconnect later.

The issue is not necessarily that Starlink blocks VPN encryption. United’s stated caveat concerns very brief connectivity losses and the behavior of the particular VPN provider. Some clients recover automatically; others return to a login screen, time out or require you to authenticate again.
Practical VPN workflow
- Join the aircraft Wi‑Fi network and complete United’s sign-in or access page before opening the VPN client.
- Once ordinary internet access works, start the VPN and confirm that your work service or private network is reachable.
- Keep the airline portal and your VPN credentials available. A short drop can force the client or the Wi‑Fi session to authenticate again.
- If the tunnel will not establish, disconnect the VPN, verify that the captive portal still shows an active session, then reconnect the tunnel.
- For a time-critical meeting or transfer, keep a non-VPN fallback such as an offline copy of required files. United’s terms do not guarantee VPN continuity.
Large transfers can be affected by the same bandwidth-management rule that applies to streaming. If a transfer is business-critical, begin it before departure or wait until landing rather than assuming an onboard VPN will sustain it.
Can you make voice or video calls?
Technical capability is different from passenger permission
United’s Starlink materials include video calls among the activities the broadband connection can support. That describes network capability. It does not establish a universal permission for passengers to place calls on every flight.
A Tom’s Guide hands-on report found that the United connection splash screen prohibited voice and video calls on a typical flight. A TechRadar test allowed a video call only as a controlled demonstration and described such calls as not allowed on a typical commercial flight. Those observations match the distinction travelers need to remember: the network may carry a call, while the airline’s onboard notice or crew rules may prohibit starting one.

What to do before joining a call
- Read the Wi‑Fi connection notice after you join the aircraft network.
- Follow the current cabin announcement and crew instructions if they are stricter than the technical capability described in marketing material.
- Do not assume that a call is permitted because the app signs in, a test call connects or another passenger is using one.
- Use text chat, email or asynchronous collaboration when voice and video calls are prohibited.
United’s published materials do not provide one app-by-app passenger policy that overrides the flight-specific notice. Treat voice and video calling as potentially prohibited unless the onboard rules clearly allow it.
How to know whether your flight has Starlink
Starlink is not installed across United’s entire fleet. United’s October 14, 2025 launch release said customers would receive a notification before departure when their aircraft was Starlink-equipped. Check that pre-departure message rather than inferring availability from the route, aircraft family or a previous flight.
United’s July 15, 2026 SEC-filed results reported 450 aircraft installed and said nearly 1,000 were expected to be installed by year-end. The filing also reported that flights with Starlink achieved Wi‑Fi satisfaction scores more than twice those of other Wi‑Fi aircraft. It cited 128,000 viewing hours on select Starlink flights as of July 5, 2026. Those figures show a rapidly expanding program, but they do not mean every United departure has Starlink today.

Is United Starlink Wi‑Fi free?
United’s January 5, 2025 announcement says Starlink access is free for MileagePlus customers. MileagePlus membership is the access requirement United identifies for that free service. The announcement does not establish that every traveler, regardless of membership or flight, receives identical access terms, so check the onboard portal and the pre-departure information for your itinerary.

Free access also does not remove the technical limits described in United’s terms. A free connection can still be throttled, briefly interrupted or subject to the flight’s rules on voice and video calls.

Evaluate four separate questions instead of treating “Starlink” as a single guarantee:

Troubleshooting common problems
Streaming keeps buffering
First pause other high-bandwidth activity on your devices. If playback remains unstable, reduce video quality or switch to downloaded content. United’s terms allow throttling when bandwidth is constrained, so repeated reconnects cannot guarantee a higher rate.

The VPN disconnects
Check whether ordinary web access still works. If it does, reconnect the VPN. If the portal has expired, sign in to the aircraft Wi‑Fi again before restarting the tunnel. United specifically warns that very brief losses can lead to intermittent VPN access and multiple logins.
A video call connects but you are told to stop
End the call and follow the onboard notice or crew instruction. A successful technical connection does not override passenger-use rules. Switch to text-based collaboration if you need to continue working.
Starlink is not available after boarding
Confirm that the pre-departure notification identified this aircraft as equipped. If it did not, the flight may be using ordinary onboard Wi‑Fi instead. The size of United’s installation program does not make Starlink universal.
Bottom line for travelers
On a United aircraft identified as Starlink-equipped, streaming is an intended use and should be substantially more capable than the airline’s older connectivity experience. VPNs can work for browsing and work access, but brief drops may require reconnection. Starlink can technically support video calls, yet typical-flight notices and crew instructions may prohibit passenger voice or video calls. Check the aircraft notification, join through the onboard portal, and keep offline backups for anything you cannot afford to lose.
